Center Since our School Unit comprises such a vast area, it is necessary for the Unit to own twenty- six buses and twelve carry-alls. Buses travel ap- proximately 197,000 miles in a year. Each day students are transported to and from school. In addition to carrying students to and from school, our transportation system provides a means for trips to all athletic events and other extracurricu- lar school activities. Transportation MR. Mrs. Catherine Neuman directs some students in the bedside technique practiced in hospitals. The Area Vocational Center located at Marion Sen- ior High School was established in 1967 to help meet the needs of students in the area who are interested in specialized training in agriculture, agriculture mechan- ics, auto mechanics, building trades, drafting, electric- ity and electronics, forestry and conservation, food ser- vices, and office machines and office occupations. Ad- ditional courses concerning child care, distributive and marketing education, and nursing services have been added since. Pupils are transported to the Center by the home school on a half day basis. Students receive special- ized vocational training while enrolled in all other course work and extra-curricular activities at their home high school. Two units of credit are given for each year’s work. The participating school districts are Johnston City, Marion, Crab Orchard, Herrin, Carterville, and Gore- ville. Students develop welding experiences under the watchful eyes of Mr. John Grant and Allen McCabe. 23
