In Memoriam On November 11, 1965 sorrow came to our school when we learned of the death in Berryville, Virginia, of our former principal, Allan R. Edwards. Mr. Edwards became principal in 1933 and served until 1952, with an interyal between May 22, 1942 and July 1, 194-6 when during World War II, he served in the armed forces of the United States, in the South Pacific. He was principal of our school during a period of transition. When he became principal in 1933 our area was deep in depres- sion, Under his guidance as principal the faculty co-oper- ated to provide a good school despite limited finances. During his tenure the financial status of the school im- proved, and the ground work was laid for our present efficient system. Mr. Edwards is remembered for his efficient administra- tion. But he is remembered for more than this. His rela- tionship with students had a personal character, and his students remained his friends long after the teacher-pupil relationship was ended. Students liked him because he liked the students and was glad to discuss their affairs with them. Our school and our community mourn his passing, and the grief is intensified in the hearts of those who were students during his tenure, and who through the years, have continued to call him Hfriendf' Our School Crest Our school crest in gold medalet on the cover of this 1966 Memory Kitj' was designed by Allan R. Edwards, a former principal of Marion High School. The background of the crest is a French shield' because this country was first owned by France. Superimposed on the top of the shield is a representation of the sphinx rep- resenting this part of the country known as Egypt. Running diagonally across the shield is a broad band representing the Logan Highway flfioute 131 on which Marion is lo- cated. On one side of the road agriculture is represented and on the other side of the road mining is represented be- cause our area is roughly divided in like manner. In the lower part of the shield is the lamp of learning indicating both industries are maintained and supported by knowledge. The date in 1885 in Roman numerals indicates the founding date of the school. The motto His Vivimusi' translated means, By these we live. 4
