Edwards. Mr. Edwards became principal in 1933 and served until 1952, with an interyal between May 22, 1942 and July 1, 194-6 when during World War II, he served in the armed forces of the United States, in the South Pacific. He was principal of our school during a period of transition. When he became principal in 1933 our area was deep in depres- sion, Under his guidance as principal the faculty co-oper- ated to provide a good school despite limited finances. During his tenure the financial status of the school im- proved, and the ground work was laid for our present efficient system. Mr. Edwards is remembered for his efficient administra- tion. But he is remembered for more than this. His rela- tionship with students had a personal character, and his students remained his friends long after the teacher-pupil relationship was ended. Students liked him because he liked the students and was glad to discuss their affairs with them. Our school and our community mourn his passing, and the grief is intensified in the hearts of those who were students during his tenure, and who through the years, have continued to call him Hfriendf' Our School Crest Our school crest in gold medalet on the cover of this 1966 Memory Kitj' was designed by Allan R. Edwards, a former principal of Marion High School. The background of the crest is a French shield' because this country was first owned by France. Superimposed on the top of the shield is a representation of the sphinx rep- resenting this part of the country known as Egypt. Running diagonally across the shield is a broad band representing the Logan Highway flfioute 131 on which Marion is lo- cated. On one side of the road agriculture is represented and on the other side of the road mining is represented be- cause our area is roughly divided in like manner. In the lower part of the shield is the lamp of learning indicating both industries are maintained and supported by knowledge. The date in 1885 in Roman numerals indicates the founding date of the school. The motto His Vivimusi' translated means, By these we live. 4 Miss Mary W. Arford retires after 4-3M years of teaching. 'Teaching has occupied a great deal of my adult life. As a child, I knew I wanted to teach French in high school. When I started to college, I added Spanish to my repertoire. Soon after graduation from the University of Illinois, I came to Marion High School to teach and liked it so well I never moved. It gives me a great amount of pleasure and satisfaction when students return after ten, twenty, thirty, or even forty years ,and tell me they still remember my class and still remember what I did for them and mean to them. It has been a good life, but I am happy to reLire.', Miss Mary W. Arford School has been my life. I played school before school age, I went to school, then I taught school. I always wanted to be a teacher. There has always been a great satisfaction in helping young people to learn. There is also a lot of pleas- ure in meeting those who have been my pupils and in learn- ing of their successes. These are some of the rewards of teaching. Mr. W. S. B. Dean SO DEAR TO OUR HEARTS- Certainly these words truly express the sincere feelings of both faculty and students toward Miss Arford and Mr. Dean. Both, by their examples in living and teaching, have demonstrated the best standards for all of us. Their kind and patient attitudes-their devotion to duty-to fellow workers-and to students who have sat under their tute- lage for many years will long be remembered. Would that more of us might follow in their footsteps. Recognition Mr. W. S. B. Dean retires after 41 years of teaching. 5 OUR HIGH SCHOOL DAYS BEGAN HERE. Mr. Manier and Mr. Gotway taught these Biology classes W' During summer school of 1965 the Biology students we given an opportunity to study the development of the chit embryo. Chicken eggs were incubated and broken opt each day for a period of twenty-one days. During th course of study the students were given a chance to wah the development of the embryo gradually over this peric of time. Several of the eggs were allowed to hatch and wei observed by the students. This section on embryolov proved to be very interesting to the students since they hd never before seen the development of an embryo. Director of Guidance Vocational Counselor , X x VL Xi.- FILOMENA RAICH B. S., M. S. Senior Counselor Guidance Department The Guidance Department at Marion Senior High School consists of The Director of Guidance Services and two other full time Counselors. The student-counselor ratio goal of 300:1, as recommended by The State Department of Guidance, has been reached at the senior high level. An additional service has been added to the guidance depart- ment. The Director of Guidance was appointed The Voca- tional Counselor by the state office, and he must work with all vocational students in the various vocational departments in the high school. Guidance serves as a liaison between student needs and school objectives. The department is a service branch of education rather than an instructional unit. The department renders its services to the students through school, parent, and community relationships. The major functions of the department are student per- sonnel services, Cpersonal and socialj a unified testing program beginning in the elementary schools and contin- uing through senior high school, occupational information services and career data, pre-registration and educational placement, and student attendance and drop-outs. MARION HIGH MATH LABORATORY Marion Senior High School is one of the few schools in the state which has a math laboratory. The math lab is a room which incorporates a totally new concept in furniture. It combines both functional purpose and beauty. More problems can be worked in less time, and more important, the student feels a degree of manipulative skill in the heretofore un- appealing task of using math tables. This room also contains an overhead projector, projection models, various solid metals, a device for measurement of inscribed and central angles, a slated globe for spherical trig, metal Compasses for the board, magnetic T-squares, triangles, and protractors. However, such a modern lab, cannot insure mathematical success or comprehension to every student. Many factors make for understanding of mathematics concepts such as self-initiative good teaching, motivation, and others. The Marion Senior High students do have the many devices needed for understanding and computing skill if they will take advantage of the opportunity. MRS. HELEN CAGLE, B.Ed., M.A. MRS. ALICE MANN, B.Ed., M.S.
