FOOTBALL SUMMARY Under three new, very capable coaches, Marion entered its football season in September. At the beginning of the year, the outlook was very good. We defeated Carterville, and then bowed to an exceptionally good Harrisburg team by a very close score, only after displaying a very gocd brand of football. Hampered by injuries the rest of the season, the Wildcats lost their remaining seven games. With seven lettermen returning, and three aggressive coaches, the Cats should fare very well in '53. Made up mostly of underclassmen, the cage Wild- cats made a very fine showing in the Centralia Holiday Tournament by placing 4th in a field of 16 teams from all over the State. The team finished the regular season with a record of 12 wins and 14 losses. They entered the Regional Tournament at Herrin and defeated all three Carbondale teams to win the 1st place trophy and advance to the Marion Sectional. In the Sectional, Marion defeat- ed a fine Anna-Jonesboro team and then lost to West Frankfort thereby losing a trip to Cham- paign. The Cats ended the year with a 16-15 record. With most of the squad returning next year and with plenty of experience, Marion should have a great year. Most of the Freshmen gained valuable experience in their initial season of basketball and with next year's Freshmen they should compose an outstanding Frosh-Soph squad. The Sophomores should move up to the Varsity squad and add strength to the Varsity squad. LEFT: Coach Glenn Trulove . . . FRONT ROW: Gerald Ramsey, LeRoy Anderson, Jim King . . . Marion's 1952 track season ended with the District meet at Carbondale in which Pete Christy of the Wildcats qualified for the State Meet in the 440 yd. run. Because of a lack of depth, the Cats of the cinder track failed to come out on top but usually placed in each meet. Six men received letters but five of them were Seniors. Gene Baggett and Pete Christy were Marion's most consistent point getters. With added strength the track and field men should have a better season in '53. The Wildcats of the baseball diamond finished the 1952 season with a record of 6 wins and 4 losses. As a team, the batting average was considerably lower than it has been in previous years. Gene Baggett again was high man with the stick with a .318 average. Gordon Lambert (5 wins-2 losses) and Jim King (1 win—2 losses) performed Marion's mound duties. Wtih practically the whole team back, (Baggett and Gulley graduated) the Cats should be a greatly improved ball club in 1953. SEASON'S RECORD Marion R. H. E. Opponent R. H. E.
