I-I. S. have been dipping into the future to see what it 'holds for us. The vision on our horizon is an additional building - Our Dream School. The year 1948-49 marks the passing of a dream into reality. We are witnessing the act- uality we have so long envisioned. All things worthwhile are achieved if those with visions are willing to plan, and work, and wait to see their dreams fullfilled. Dreams are desirable, but We must put foundations under them. -2- f' 'Q' if . A 1 lg.. Eg x 2 u gg W:!'w' ,,,...,,4..,,.y..,,.sMwwwerm f - Q an ,W .V . . 0 A QM, +- X Q-If 41 ' '35 ' 5 1. IH I v SENIOR OFFICERS President, Paul Miller Secretary-Treasurer, Virginia Durham Vice-President, Clayal Hill TheSer1iur Elass Pausing at the threshold of the dream house which we, the class of '49 leave for others to occupy, we find many fine things accomplished by our class. We be- gan the fall of '45 as shy, green, and hesitant freshmen looking to our sophisticated seniors for advice and coun- sel. Finally, however, we were considered human be- ings and were allowed to tread the halls along with our schoolmates. At our first class meeting we chose Paul Miller, president, Graydon Hoover, vice-presidenty and Robert Monroe, secretary and treasurer. Student Council representatives were Betty Io Green. Marilyn Iohnson, Paul Miller, Ann Harper, Roberta Odum, and Graydon Hoover. Along came the Homecoming festivities and we fresh- men came through and elected Roberta Odum queen attendant. Rotary Day rolled around and Betty Io Green received the gold key, and Roberta Odum received the silver key. Pins went to Mary Ann Atkisson, Patty Baker, Margaret DuPont, Phyllis Dwyer, Wayne Noe Hill, Gray- don Hoover, Barbara Marsh, Ramona Priest, lim Stau- dacher, and Catherine Whitcomb. Our Sophomore year was the betwixt and between year for us but nevertheless, we were ready to take any responsibility put on our shoulders, Our first job was the election of class officers. We chose Ramona Priest, presidentg Dolores Eason, vice-president: Betty Io Green, secretary, and H. L. Springhart, treasurer. It was our duty to sponsor the Hop, so these officers had a tough job on their shoulders. At Homecoming Betty Io Green and Margaret DuPont were selected as queen attendants, In the way of Rotary Awards, Betty lo Green again received the gold key. Iirn Staudacher received the sil- ver key, and pins went to Delmar Hancock, Ramona Priest, Roberta Odum, Delores Strobel, Patty Baker, Ann Harper, Marilyn Iohnson, and Peggy Pulley. fContinued on Page 30D SENIOR STUDENT COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVES Seated, left to right, Roberta Odurn Betty Io Green Marilyn lohnson Graydon Hoover lim Staudacher Seniors lOAN ADAMS Art Club lp Chesterfield Club 25 Spanish Club l, 23 Dramatics Club lg Library Club 1, 2, 3, 4, Pres. 3, Typing Awards 3. At their first class meeting, they elected Tommy Iohnston, president: Mary Donna Brush, vice-presidentp and Gordon Hill, secretary-treasurer. Their class sponsors were Miss Sanders and Mr. Storme. Vernon Marion 0 Harrisburg Marion 6 Iohnston City Tho 1948 Football Season MARION O CARTERVILLE 2 For the innaugeration of the 1948 football season the Marion Wildcats journeyed to Carterville to meet the Carterville Lions. The Lions eeked out a mere two points in the form of a safety for the only score of the game, which ended in a 2 to O score. MARION O ELDORADO I9 Our Wilcats came out on the short end of a 19 to O count against the Eldorado Eagles who were favorites over our squad. The team held an advantage in that they had a large squad. This, and a speedy backfield, spoiled the Cats' chance for a victory over Coach Trulove's home town team. MARION 7 WEST FRANKFORT 27 The West Frankfort Red Birds disappointed a large turnout of Marion fans at the first home game of the '48 season. The West Frankfort team was not much larger than our midget squad, but had several more experienced men than ours. The Birds ended the tilt with 27 points, and the Wildcats captured a touchdown and an extra point for 7 points. MARION 6 BENTON 33 The Benton Rangers rode into Marion to supply competition forthe Cats' second conference game and rode back to Benton with a 33 to 6 conquest. The Ranger with the most notches in his gun was the fullback, big Red Bauer, Who scored all 5 touch- downs for the visitors. The Marion squad scored their second conference touchdown on a long pass and a plunge after a long drive to the Benton goal line. MARION 7 CENTRALIA 21 The Wildcats hit the half-way point of their 1948 football campaign when they joumeyed to Centralia to meet the Centralia Orphans! The Orphans came out on top by a 21 to 7 score. The Wildcats pushed across their third such touchdown in con- ference competition this year when they tallied their 7 points against the Orphans. MARION 0 HARRISBURG 55 Cats treed by Bulldogs. The Harrisburg Bulldogs threw a hard punch at our Marion Wildcats at the tune of 55 to O at Harrisburg. The Bulldogs, one of the strong- est teams of the South Six and Southern Illinois, were made to earn all that they got, as it was not handed to them by the Cats. The Wildcats fought a hard battle, but the Harrisburg machine was not to be matched. MARION O IOI-INSTON CITY 32 The Marion Wildcats played host to the Iohnston City Indians in a non-conference affair that saw the cats lose their scalps as the fall victim by a 32 to 0 score. The Red Skins donned their war paint and crossed the Marion goal line at frequent intervals while the Wildcats failed to penetrate the Indians' zone. MARION 0 HERRIN 6 The Marion Wildcats tangled with the Herrin Tigers in the final out of town game of the year. The Tigers slipped by our Alma Mater by one mere touchdown, 6 to U. It was a hard loss for the team, especially against our old rivals from Herrin. MARION 0 CHRISTOPHER 13 The curtain rang down on another gridiron season here at M. T. H. S. as our Mar- ion Wildcats humbled before the Christopher Bearcats. The game, a non-conference tilt, ended in a I2 to O score as the Bearcats salvaged two touchdowns, one of which came in the last seconds of the game. -93- fi . VH .K X ?1 J' . P 'N 5?
