Being meek and quiet and realizing upperclassmen's superiority we chose Bill Buck- ner, Presidentg Iohn Pangbom, Vice-Presidentg Terry Iones. Treasurerg and Georg Ann Stapleton, Secretary. The up- perclassmen helped us find our way around, directed us to the elevators and math lab and advised us as to how much to pay for basement passes. In order that we might voice our opinion a little and let people know that the freshman class existed, we elected Sue Carter, Pat Grassinger, Iohn Holiday, Ernie Knutzen, Carol Reichert and lean Wasson to the Student Council. On the Freshman-Sophomore gridiron we were repre- sented by Gerald Canncn, Ierry Iones, lim Lyons, Bill McCabe, Date McNeil, and Iohn Powell showing their brain and brawn with Eddie Miller and Bob Mosher as managers. Miss Barbara Taylor was our representative in the annual carnival. Bill Buckner was her escort. With football season over our interest turned towards basketball, especially to Bill Buckner and Floyd Hill whose positions as Freshmen on the varsity first five made us very proud of them. Striving for fame on the Freshman4Sopho- more squad were Pat Grassinger, Bob Gulledge, Ernie Knutzen, Bob Mosher and Charlie Norman. On the cinders, the freshman crew consisted of George Cannon, Bob Gulledge, Harry Ohms, and Charles Turner. Eddie Miller filled the position as manager. Rotary awards went to Carol Reichert, Gold Keyg Art Sims, Silver Key: and the pins went to Dale Adams, ferry Bean, Donald Davenport, Marvin Fossie, Carol Goddard. Pat Grassinger, Iohn Holiday, Ernie Knutzen, Betty Iarie Wheeler. Our sophomore year at M. T, H. S, found us just a little bit wiser with one year of fun and good times behind us. We were given the chance to show our stuff when we put on the Hop . The theme was a circus and Barbara Tay- lor, being president of the class, was ring master. We also showed the student body just who we were when pushed to the top, Barbara Taylor as Homecoming Queen and George Ann Stapleton and Bill Buckner as Carnival Queen and King. Two queens from the same class the same year isn't so bad! Holding offices in the Student Council we had Sue Carter as Secretary. Carol Reichert was chosen as assist- ant Feature Editor on the annual staff. Marvin Fossie, Eddie Miller, and Fred Tremper played Freshman-Sophomore football while on the varsity we boasted six lettermen - Pat Grassinger, Bill Iames, Carl Minton, Bill McCabe, Date McNeil, and Bill Whiting, Bob Mosher was again manager. Playing on the FreshmanfSophomore basketball team were Bob Gulledge, Charlie Norman, Red Springhart. and Harry Thompson. This year was considered one of the greatest for M. T. H. S.'s basketball team. Entering the State Tournament, with a record of 29-7 we defeated Calumet City, We were then beaten by Champaign. Both Buckner and Hill were playing first string ball again. Trevor Willhite was man- ager and Dean Gulledge and Shirley Melvin were cheer- leaders from our class. This was also an important year in the sports history of M. T. H. S.: it was the first year we had organized baseball. We were represented on the diamond by Bill Buckner, Marvin Fossie, Bob Gulledge, Date McNeil, Bob Russell, and Bill Strobel. Rotary Awards went to Carol Reichert, Gold Keyg Betty lean Wheeler, Silver Keyg and pins to Donald Davenport, Carol Goddard, Pat Grassinger, Shirley Melvin, Peggy Pulley, Art Sims. At last we were considered upperclassmen. To lead us through our lunior year, we elected the following of- ficers, Carol Reichert, Presidentg Dorothy McNail, Vice- President: Georg Ann Stapleton, Secretaryg and Shirley Ashley, Treasurer. lt was our job this year to give the prom. We chose Deep Purple as our theme and the decorations, refreshments and music were planned ac- cordingly. Carleen Sherrard was our nominee for Homecoming Queen. Holding offices in Student Council we had Carol Reichert as Commissioner of Finance and Sue Carter, Sec- retary for the second consecutive year. Sue was also as- sistant editor of the newspaper. On the annual staff there was Carol Reichert, Assistant Editor: Carol Goddard, Assistant Feature Editor: Sue Carte er, Assistant Class Editorg Iohn Campbell, assistant Sports Editor. A speedy Backfield and a strong line which held the Lions to two first and tens, were the main factors in the Wildcat victory. Marion O West Frankfort 37 Good interference and lots of reserve power meant a victory for the strong Red Birds. lVlarion's inexperienced line and backfield were stopped cold for a net gain of two yards in their first conference game of the year. Marion U Sparta l8 After holding the Bulldogs to one touch down in the first half, the Spartans invaded the Wildcat end zone twice to ice up the contest and give the 'Cats the weak end of the 18 to 0 verdict. Marion U , Benton 43 The Benton backfield rolled up first and tens and touchdowns at random while the line was holding the Wildcats scoreless and twice upsetting them behind their own goal line. This was the Wildcats second conference loss. Marion 7 Centralia Zl The Centralia Orphans subdued the Marion Wildcats in their third conference defeat of the season 21 to 7. In the Second half the 'Cats buckled down and held the Orphans to 9 points while getting 7 themselves by starting a march to the Centralia goal line which ended with Marion's first Conference tally of the season. ..-82-. lLlETTlElRMlENl w-ag-il Bill Bader Chczlfbcxckl Bill Bethel Chcrlfbcckl George Henderson fendl Paul Miller Ccenterl Fred Tremper Cquurdl H. Marion 6 Harrisburg 37 The 'Cats iurnped to an early 6 to O lead with a 62 yard run, but the Bulldogs from Harrisburg hit hard with an offensive attack. ' ass ,qv 1 atsllrettlballll November, 1947 saw the spotlight on Coach Virgil Vililson's Wildcats, A number of fans had tlim liorzes for the season, however, this team proved to be one of the great teams of M, T. H. S. During the early part of the season the 'Cats lost to Centralia 65-49, Mt. Vernon 52-40, Hcrrfsburzg 57-51, and Centralia again 74-51. During the annual Centralia Holiday Tourney the 'Cats lost their second game to Robinson 56-to-42. Entering the Benton Tournament the Wilsonmen lost their second game to the No. 1 team in the State, Pinckneyville, 48-to-31. Getting back into regular play, the team began clicking as a whole and we wcn over Her- rin 50-45, and Benton 64-52, before dropping one to Murphysboro 42-37. Winning over Metropolis 72-51, the Fight ing Five lost to highly rated Lawrenceville 66-52, and went on to win over Iohnston City 46-41 in their fast gaiiio of the regular season. lt was no surprise to any loyal Marion fan when the boys made a clean sweep of the Regional Tourney by beat- ing Eldorado 66-49, Carrier Mills 60-40, and Harrisburg 53-49. ln Sectional play the 'Cats brought home the First Place Trophy by winning over a fine ball team from Murphysboro 47 to 42. This was the second First Place Sectional Trophy Coach Wilson and his boys have won in nine years, the first being won in 1946. Cuss Wilson and team leit for the State Finals in Champaign with the highest hopes and best wishes of the fans. These hopes became realities when Marion won over the team picked to take first place, Collinsville, 65-to-60. The 'Cats Won this game with a shooting average of .437 While the Collinsville 'Kahoks' had an average of .45-1. The Wildcats entered the Quarter-Finals of the Tourney with hopes that had soared to the sky, but were beaten by Perkins 55 to 47. It's goodby io the team of '47-'43 and to Seniors Hill, Buckner, and Norman. But with high hopes we are looking forward to the team of 1948-49. and the return of Connell, Mazurek, Gulledge, Caqle, Cloud, Raglin, and Stauciafher to Varsity play. . .es - 1, I 1253 -7 wx-:amz Fx 'Q Qs x Hia 1 f M, , 411 CQ! w , ww 4 :22 az, a g ' ,,,.,- ,, gr -ez x ,.-f my .sw D , . ,., ? , fb ff , 1 hw fig., mwg Q Q12 Q 5 -41 25 fi ' fn - i xx VA Q 1 1-1 , i ,K , A ':1 Ei Z.
