It was given in the auditorium on December 6, and all critics seemed to feel it was a job well- done. The play itself is a fascinating psychological mystery. There are many tense moments after young Bud Owen, who has been missing for three years, re turns to his home. As usual, however, all complica- tions are smoothed out. The performance represented a great deal of effort on the part of the cast, the directors-Mrs. Dor- othy Lankford and Miss Faye Homrighous and the unsung heroes behind the scenes. For weeks all those connected with the production worked long and hard to make it a success. Bud Owen ,,,r,.,,,,,,,,, Judith Cunningham David Cunningham Walter Dawson .,.. The title, A MIND OF HER OWN, indicates the trend of the play. it is a story of Bunny Eartlett, a foolish little girl mocking everyone and not knowing how to be her- self, and how her friends influenced her. It shows the troubles of this teen-age girl, and what a trial she was to her family. Despite many ups-and-downs, the story terminates with a happy situation for all, It was directed by Miss Margaret McNeile and Mr. J. Bluford Hancock. They were ably assisted by the stage managers, prompters. property managers, and all those behind the stage who worked so faithfully toward a finished production. MARION O ELDORADO 13 Marion's first home game proved to be an unexciting contest due to demoralizing weather and unin- spired play. Both of Eldorado's touchdowns came as a result of their own fumbles and quick recovery be- yond the goal line, Marion threatened several times but was unable to score. MARION 6 CARTERVILLE 6 Marion's attack, spearheaded by line plunges by Carl Minton and Maurice Ashley, was climaxed when Ashley scored early in the second quarter. Carterville rallied in the second half to tie the score on several DRSSCS. MARION 0 CENTRALIA 13 Marion, inspired by a fine crowd, played one of their best games against the Orphans. Using a new spread formation accompanied by a five man line with four line backers, the Wildcats stayed on equal terms with the powerful Centralia team, However, three Marion penalties enabled Centralia to score twice. MARION 13 HARRISBURG 14 Excellent weather brought out a large Homecoming crowd to witness a contest which saw a Wildcat rally fall short by one point. Marion rallied in the second period to score twice on the Harrisburg Bulldogs, but final tabulations found the battered Marion team on the short end of a 14-13 count. MARION 0 JOHNSTON CITY 7 Holding the much heavier Johnston City Indians 0-0 at half time, an improved Marion team went on to lose 7-0. This game saw another new series of p.ays. The climax of the game was a 99-yard run by Riddle, 'Marion quarterback, which was called back by the referee. MARION 0 MT. VERNON 13 Another 0-0 score at halftime resulted in an ultimate loss for Marion. The Wildcats dominated the first half of the game, but they lacked the necessary scoring punch. The Rams' touchdowns came as a result of an aerial attack. By far the best defensive play was a tackle by R. Ashley, Marion fullback, who chased the Mt. Vernon end 70 yards and brought him to a halt. MARION 20 HERRIN 25 Coming up with the necessary swrins punch but showing a lack of defensive work, the Wildcats came back from the short end of a .19-0 count to come within 5 points of the mighty Tigers of Herrin, Minton, Marion halfback, proved to be the star with two long, brilliant touchdown runs. MARION 14 BENTON 39 B. Butler and R. Ashley, first string backfield men, failed to see action since they were out with in- juries. Marion played a. fine first half but lack of experienced backfield men began to tell in the second half, as the Wildcats were routed in their final game, losing 39-14. The scene is Marion gymnasiumg Cuss Wilson is the speaker, We're up against a problem this year, boys. We have undoubtedly the smallest team I've yet coached. That means one thing-you boys must fight 32 minutes in every game or we'll be beaten by any mediocre team. Other- wise, it looks like a long, cold winter. Well, Cuss was mistaken when he said a long, cold winter, because his boys did come through. Each game they fought to the utmost of their ability. Looking over the schedule, we see that Marion's Wildcats trounced Carrier Mills in two revenge games and once in tournament play, each time by a margin of at least 22 points -After losing a heartbreaker at Mt. Vernon, the Cats bounced back in their own gym to dump Mt. Vernon, the score of 52-35-E eing beaten in the home gym by Centralia 50-24, the worst troun- again came back to upset Centralia in their own back yard in an overtime, 57- great rival, was beaten badly twice, 73-33 and 50-36-Crossing the Ohio River into Kentucky, the Wilsonmen trounced Kentucky's ninth place team, 49-34- A State's third place team, by the cing in many years, the Cats 55-Herrin, 'MariOn's one time At Christmas, Marion, for the first time, won the Coal Cities Tournament by heating Johnston City 45-37 and Carterville 55-34--Marion was beaten in the Centralia Holiday tournament by Champaign, the State's No. 1 team- and incidentally, ranked NO. 1 in the nation-by a '55 to 6104 score. Emerging from this defeat, Marion again de- feated Johnston City 42-37 and Alton 65-50. In the consolation finals, the Cats were beaten by Vandalia 36-46. Marion breezed through the Regional and Sectional tournaments with successive victories over Harrisburg, Car- rier Mills, Eldorado, Anna-Jonesboro, and Carterville, These victories entitled Marion to their first trip to State Finals in eleven years. Marion edged out Calumet City 42 to 38, in an overtime of their debut in Huff Gymnasium. Next, Marion, despite a third quarter rally which saw Marion come from behind to within, 1 point of Champaign, was beaten by the Maroons 55-43. Thus was ended a profitable season for one of Marion's greatest of Greats on the Hardwood. v SEASON RECORD TOURNA,MEN'l'S MARION ....... ..... 6 4 VIENNA ..,,.,,,.........,,,,, 25 COAL CITIES NIARION .,.... .... 5 4 NIETROPOLIS ........,. 41 MAARION -AYi----v--- --pl 4 5 JOHNSTON CITY MARION ....... ..... 7 5 CIXRRIER.
