We even sup- plement the functions of church and school; on the one hand creating a wider human understanding and on the other disseminating knowledge and information through medium more effective than the spoken or written word, the motion pic- ture screen. I trace my own physical lineage back to a small store building, heated by stoves, and with few comforts or conveniences, and finally my own birth as the brightest spot on Main Street with neon lights and colorful lithographs. I stand as a center of community recreational and social life and fill a need that no other institution can quite satisfy, the great human need for entertainment and relaxation. I serve, and have served, my country and my community in many ways. Dur- ing the war years, there were bond campaigns and audience collections for the Red Cross, Army-Navy Relief, U.S.O., United Nations, and Infantile Paralysis, in which you, my patrons, contributed generously. Now while no collections are being made, my screen projects the appeal of these and other organizational drives. As a special contribution I gave without charge the tremendous and very far- reaching power of my screen to the publicity features our government desired dur- ing war times, such as scrap drives, rationing regulations, nutritional information, man power appeals, and many patriotic and morale-building subjects. My manager and his staff and I stand ready at all times to co-operate in every move which is for the benefit of our nation, our state, or our community. These things are mentioned with what I hope is pardonable pride, but I en- joy my chief reward in having people gather within my walls each evening for re- laxation, enjoyment, and an ever-changing panorama of entertainment that I, and I alone, can provide.
