This leading service club has always endeavored to find a service project which will benefit the school and community. Its leading project is the annual toy drive which was conducted very success- fully this year. Not only do the boys repair the toys for orphans but also buy clothes for them. A new project was undertaken this year by the Key Club. As suggested by the National Key Club Council, Teenage Day, in which high school students were elected to town office, was held. The Key Club is con- stantly striving to serve others, promote higher ideal s in scholarship, and sportsmanship, and aid its school and community in any possible way. The officers are as follows: President, Donald Beam, Vice-President, Bob Lewis, Secretary, Jim Segars, Treasurer, Bill Swofford. The purpose of this organization is to stimulate, encourage, and reward scholarship, leadership, servuce, and character. It is all these four quality points that faculty members vote on the eligibility of a prospectiv ' e member. Candidates must have spent at least one semester at Marion High School and have a scholastic average of not less than ninety per cent over a period beginning with the ninth grade. These new members are inducted in the spring in one of the most impressive ceremonies held at Marion High School during the year. The National Honor Society is sponsored in our school by Mrs. Kate Lindsay. Officers: Vice-President, Bill Laughridge; Treasurer, Eddie Gouge; Secretary, Nancy Henline; President, Lola Foster. 30 The purpose of the National Beta Club is to promote the ideals of honesty, service, and leadership among high school students of America, to reward scholastic achieve- ment, and to encourage students to continue their education beyond high school. Annual activities include sponsoring a talent show, helping keep order at sports events, and attending the state convention. Serving as president this year is Barbara Parker. Officers— Dean Kanipe, Treasurer; Barbara Parker, President; Becky Simpson, Secretary; Nancy Henline, Vice-President. Beta Club 31 H y Co-Editors— Bill Eckerd, Sandra Hendley, Jane Goldsmith. a n d e r S t o f f Hylander: Published by the yearbook committee of the Hy- lander Staff, the Hylander records the academic year in words and pictures in an attempt to make lastingly memorable the fleeting experiences which have been most meaningful. The staff has worked hard to accomplish this purpose and pre- sents this yearbook to the students, faculty, and friends of Marion High School. Tommy Cowan, Benny Poteat, Kathy Bowman, Camilla Marionette: Covering news at Marion High School is no easy job. All members of the Marionette Staff must work together to put out a paper worthy of Marion students. Assignments must be given out, copy collected, dummy sheets made, and dead- lines met. Members work from issue to issue, writing up news events, games, and editorials. These undertakings require more teamwork and co-operation than most students realize. Not until the paper is placed in the hands of the students can the staff rest, that is, until the next issue. Sponsored by Mrs. Ted Freeman, the M ari one tte is edited by Gloria Laughridge, who is assisted by Sarah Greene. Athletic Coaches The 1964 Rippers, with one of the strongest teams since ' 57, this year put to- gether a most impressive 6- 3-2 overall record and were awarded recognition for a second place tie in conference play with a 4-2-2 record. The team began pre- paration in August for their trip to Rutherfordton, where they, in the first game of the season, soundly trounced their opponents 20-7. This win definitely boosted not only the spirits of the Rippers, but also the spirits of theM. H. S. bleachers. Everyone was up for that always-tough game with Wilkes Central, After numerous arguments and m u c h conjecture, a disappointing 0-6 score was handed down. But de- spite the score, we know the real winners, don ' t we? Next, the Rippers played host to the non- conference Shelby Lions, But alas, the Rippers drew the shorter straw but it wasn ' t much shorter, for the the score was 12-14. After these two losses, the team went win-seek- ing, and found one at Valdese in an almost too- close 7-6 victory. A trip to Taylorsville turned into a stalemate, but the Rippers were awardedthe game in over- time. The score, however, was left at 0-0 in the books. The overtime win was only valid under spec- ial circumstances. Marion 6- Hickoiy ' 38- What else can you say? A week later, atrip to Newton proved fruitful. The Rippers returned with 7- 6 win in their pockets. Marion and Morganton b att 1 e d to a 6-6 tie in a game full of excitement. The Rippers ended this season on the right foot with two victories over Lenoir and Hudson. These wins were backed up by scores of 12-0 and 19-0 respectively. On behalf of eveiyone, we would like to say, thank you to our Rippers for a tremendous season of foot- ball. 70 Football 71 First row— Jerry Hensley, Steve Dalton, Billy Poteat, Barry Puckett, Mike Biggersta ff, Butch Justice, Tyson Laney, Terry Millwood; Second row— Arthur Dillingham, Wayne Long, Mike Tilley, Charles Parker, Carl Bailey, Neil Franklin, David Freeman, Alan Parker; Third row— Randy Beck, Jim Cornett, Jack Gilley, Jim Young, Gary Hensley, Steve Flack, Dan Toney; Fourth row— Mack Hawkins, Donald Beam, Joe Padgett, Charles Carlan, Ronnie Gentry Ted Young, Edward Grayson, Tommy Arrowood; Fifth row— M a n a g e r s: Steve Sherlin, Vicky Crawley, Jimmy Crawley, Gary- Bradley.
