Their efforts to make our lunch period an enjoyable time of the day will always be appreciated by the students of Marion High School. Custodians Hard-working, dedicated, friendly. What else could one ask of this fine group of people. They help Marion High to be a better place for us to work and live in. 92 93 CreattbrnesB I m ¥ 94 95 V Hylander Staff The Hylander Staff spends many long, hard hours preparing a quality yearbook. We feel that this year ' s annual is the best yet; however, our aim is not to satisfy ourselves, but to satisfy you, the students of M. H. S. We have tried to represent every phase of life around our school in this yearbook. This in itself is an extremely difficult task due to the many facets of life present in the school and the lack of funds available to the staff. A publication staff is certainly no better than its foundation. Mr. Robert Howell is that foundation. With- out his guidance it would have been impossible for an annual to have been edited this year. Mr. Howell was willing to give up part of his after-school time to advise the editors. He has had approximately eight years ex- perience with yearbooks. We are proud that he is spending his ninth year with us. We, the Hylander Staff, join in expressing our appre- ciation to the students and teachers for their co-operation with us in editing this annual. No chairs, no sleep, no end in sight. Marionette Staff The Marionette Staff consists of approximately twenty- two members. The Marionette is published four times during the school year with special emphasis placed on the Christmas and commencement editions. Several staff members attended the S.I, P.A. Convention at Washington and Lee University where they received in- structions in journalism. The staff also sponsors the Marionette Revue and Twerp Week. This very able group of journalists is joined by their ad- visor, Mrs. Ted Freeman, in editing an excellent record of M. H. S, activities. Latin Club The Latin Club under the leadership of Miss Catherine Alley, advisor; and Wendell Strickland, President; creates an ac- tive interest in Latin; a written, not spoken, lan- guage. Students are en- titled to membership only as they study the language. In the spring many of the members don costumes depicting ancient Roman heroes. Latin is now a dead language but one certainly couldn ' t tell this from Miss Alley ' s Latin students. 104 Future Home- makers Jane Hall, Mary Margaret Jones, Jean Causby, Doris Causby, Dottie Forrester, Nellie Lock man, Sarah Robinson, Frances Hoyes, Donna Greene, Michelle Cane, Carol Young, Tonya Burnette, Pat Gilbert, Becky Moss, Elaine Barnes, Patsy Noles, Carolyn Smith, Judy Proctor, Linda Ellis, Diane Epley, Margaret Jimison, Linda Kaylor, Betty Wilbanks, Judy Cog dill, Carolyn White, Beth Kent, Elizabeth Robinson, Mary Lynn Davis, Gail Ward, Jane Long, Glenda Skipper, Frances Rumfelt. The Rippers journeyed to North Wilkesboro and gave the Eagles one of the toughest games they had ever played. The Rippers lost on the score board, but M. H. S. was very proud of the performance of the whole team. The Wilkes C entral game was just a beginning for the Rippers inshowing their aggressiveness and ability on the grid- iron. After successive wins over Valdese and Taylorsville, the Rippers traveled to Hickory to take on the Red Tornadoes. When the game was over— the Rippers were again short on the scoreboard; however, the Red Tornadoes could have been called the Black-and-Blue Tornadoes. October 11 was the big night of the football season— Homecoming! With the Homecoming Queen, her court, and the sponsors looking on, the M. H. S. Rippers outclassed the Newton-Conover team so much that the Red Devils went home feeling quite tame. Thank you. Rippers, for giving of your best to the 1963 season I Coach Ted Freeman and Coach H. Wilson discuss plans for the Homecoming game. 115 Jerry McKinney Jim Bradley Jack Honeycutt Varsity Marion 6 Wilkes Central 21 Marion 6 Shelby 33 Marion 34 Valdese 19 Marion 12 Taylorsville 7 Marion 19 Hickory 28 McKinney scores on 63-yard run. Wilson and Jerry McKeithan led the little Rippers to their first undefeated season in a long time. The little Rippers were really little with one of the largest players weighing in at 165 poun ds. Ho ' W ever, what these determined boys lacked in weight, they compensated with speed and strength. They literally outran, outplayed, and out- thought all of their opponents. The boys played a clean, hard-hitting brand of football. They never let down, which is the mark of a championship team. The little Rippers were, in fact, so good that the varsity decided that they needed these boys on their team, so many of the little Rippers were promoted to the varsity. This marked the end of the season for these boys as a team, but they will all be back together next year on the varsity squad. Beware, Northwestern Conference ! The Marion High School baseball team has yet to experi- ence a losing season under Coach Jerry McKeithan. This year. Coach McKeithan ' s fourth at M.H. S. , the team is expected to come on strong and finish at the top of the Northwestern Conference. All of last year ' s 5-3 team will return with the exception of the second baseman. The strong point of the Rippers will be defense, as has been the case for the past three years. The deciding factor for the team ' s success for the 1964 season will be offense. If tiieir hitting is on the level of their potential, there should be no problem with the offense. This year ' s Rippers have had as much experience as any high school team could have. Most of the boys are members of a summer team, and would probably play baseball the year ' round if it were up to them. Many of the boys started to practice late in January-. This is the kind of a baseball team the Rippers mil have this year . . .a hard-working, dedicated group of athletes. 128 John Tucker Steve Dalton Billy Poteat Jerry McKinney 1963 Scoreboard Morganton Valdese Morganton Valdese Wilkes Central Hickory Taylorsville Newton-Conover Lenoir Hudson April 3 10 17 21 24 H 28 H May 1 5 8 H 12 H Tennant Teeter Bobby Biggerstaff Gene Skipper Roger Miller Joe Padgett Lynn Rayburn Wrestling Jerry Hensley, Jack Gilley, James Queen, Allan Parker, Jim Goldsmith, Jerry Lawing, Grady Revis,Hoyt Lytle, Jim Bolden, Larry Gentry, Wayne Williams, Charles Briggs, Jerry Prather, Kenneth Wilson, Lawrence Goings, Wendell Strickland, Sam Hall, Jerald Thomas, Danny Martin, Ricky Luther, Kenneth Harvey, Greg Gallen, Ray Fortner, Roger Lytle, Gary Lawing, Manager Gary Bradley, Coach Howard Wilson. 130 The Rippers prepare in the mat room for an upcoming match. 6olf Jerry Rabon, Jerry Issacs, S k e e t e r Jay, Jim Gold- smith, Bo McBee, Dean Kanipe, John Neal, Bill Laughridge, Rick Lonon, Mack Hawkins, Mike Wyatt, J a c k Honeycutt.
