We have worked hard and worried long in striving to portray the happenings of this school year. The pictures you see and the words you read can not possibly tell the feelings experi- enced during these events. Only you know the beauty of our homecom- ingg only you know the pride of seeing our band marching at football gamesg only you can picture the excitement and color of the football games. These are the memories each of us will remember in his own way. Q On our division pages we have used our familiar school songs as the theme of this Hylander. In some instances our write-ups have musical tones in them, which we hope you will like. It is with this thought that we give you your 1960 Hylander. ' THE EDITORS ., rw , it I .ft ' ,QL mf, :xi if? Bottom row: Mr. Eugene Cross, Mrs. Howard Burgin, Mr. Bob Shirley, Mr. Robert Twitty. In order to have a well-rounded school administration, some individuals must work the year a- round. The members of the Board of Education do this, selecting administrative officers and faculties for each school, making up the schedule for the year, and setting policies for the smooth operation of the Marion School system. Three new members were appointed to the Board in January: Mrs. B. M. Eckerd, Mrs. Howard Burgin, and Mr. Bob Shirley. SECRETARY TO SUPERINTENDENT SECRETARY TO PRINCIPAL lg-I 'iv' 'x Miss Helen Smarr 6 Mrs. Eunice Pyatt gr , ,. J --p , - vw. ...- L i wfffvfl B an., Od' '15 Q1 PRINCIPAL This is a red-letter year for Mr. Elledge: he entered the Marion schools at the same time as this year's graduating class. In fact, he entered the same school with many of them because in that year, 1948, Central Elementary and Marion High School were combined. For twelve years he has watched them grow physically and mentally, and he has grown in experience along with them. His working day is long. From the first telephone call in the morning, Are we going to have school today? or My bus has broken down or John has a sore throat and can't be at school today to a call from the police department at midnight, There is a window open in the back of the high school building, he works with hundreds of people. When summer comes and the horn in the west calls, he hies to the hills to be assistant director of the drama and play the mountain golf courses. Buteach Monday you may see him at his desk in Marion High School, finishing the work of one year and preparing for that of the next. SUPERINTENDENT Mr. Beam is the power behind the throne at Marion High School. The students do not see him every day, but they know he is working continuously for their best interests. He attends the ballgames, the plays, the concerts, and the banquets as well as the P.T.S.A. meetings. He is the cheerful advisor of any student, parent, or teacher who approaches him with a problem. While his office is maintained in the City Hall, he is never very far away from the work that is being done in the class- rooms and on the athletic fields of the Marion school system. THE 1960 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Jim Long, Vice-President, Mickey Lewis, Sec- retarygBobby Morris, PresidentgJeffrey Honey- cutt, Treasurer. For twelve years we have worked and stud- ied for the diplomas we will soon receive. When we were Freshmen we looked forward to our Senior year with great anticipation. Now that we have reached our Senior year, we realize that our high school days slipped by too fast and that each year was most rewarding as we attained new goals. This last year we willespecially cherish --- even our academic Work. Learning about Shake- speare's 'Hamlet' and the sine, cosine, and tan- gent in our Senior algebra class are all part of Senior year. Outside of our school work we will look back on the laughs and fun at our Senior Christmas party, receiving our class rings, the long-awaited Washington-New York trip, and at last Graduation Day as pleasant memories. We, as a class, would like to thank the teach- ers and principal who have so patiently given us wise counsel and instruction. With the interest and teaching they have given us, we leave Marion High School knowing that the days spent here have been invaluable. Lookingback over our years at Marion High School we have found our Junior year to be the most prosperous and exciting year. We have found pleasure in giving the Junior- Senior Prom to the deserving Seniors After having worked for three hard years, many Juniors have been honored by their accept- ance into the Honor Society. Our class is very proud to give to the school experienced and outstanding sportsmen forthe athletic program. CLASS Olivia Auerhamer Doris Ayers Patsy Ayers -S. The name Sophomore is certainly appropriate for our class. We are definitely in-between--no longer inexperienced Freshmen- but not quite old enough to take part in Junior-Senior activities. We can be easily recognized. Many are seen walking because we haven't quite reached the age to drive. Perhaps it would be bet- ter if a few of us hadn't learned! In the spring you will find many of us peeping at practices for the Junior and Senior plays and the decorating of the Junior-Senior. At the Honor Society induction you will find us in our chapel seats gazing wistfully at those gaining honor. Probably the things which the class will most remember will be: The wracking of our brains trying to memorize Julius Caesar the hard algebra formulas, and the time When even the strongest stomach grew weak at the sight of a dissected frog. We feel neglected and ignored, but in the years to come We will all long to live again as in-betweens. 3 J gyyhf . y i V Tommy Bach as Q. Joan Nesbitt On the first day of school there were many excited and scared, new students in the auditorium of M.H.S. These, of course, were the freshmen. After the first hectic week, we finally found our way around what we proudly call our school. We are now accustomed to the school routine, which includes knowing how to survive the daily stampede at eleven-thirty. Seriously, we want to thank the upperclassmen and teach- ers for giving us a warm welcome. We hope our class has made a worthy addition to the school and to the spirit at M.H.S. The first part of the year this group showed the results of hard work by presenting a company front routine to football spectators. In addition to our own local parades, the band traveled to Raleigh to participate in N.C. State College's homecoming parade. Bobby James, band president, is looking to Bobby Hunter, treasurer, for a reply to a question before the band council. Vice-President,Jerry Roland, and sec- retary, Becky Adkins, look at some papers that might be the new rules for the band, which the council help to make. Other council members are: Rachel Hewitt, decorating chairman, Peg Perkins, drum majoretteg Mary Dameron, assistant secretarygJem1ie Gray, pub- licity chairman, Jane McGimsey and Eloise Hewitt, librarians. 5 1 BAND When football season was over the band turned its attention to concert work, giving two concerts and entering the District and State Contests. The other Seniors we r e Ken Morgan, shortstop and the team's leading hitter, Leonard Goforth, all-confer- ence catcherg Eugene McDaniel, fir st base- man, and Frank Ross, the left fielder. Coach Reep was very proud of the hustle and desire that the boys displayed. Enthusiasm for baseball is really on the upgrade at M.H. Prospects for the 1960 season are pretty good wit h regulars John Anderson, Spencer Davis, Joe Hall, and Harold Long returning. BOYS' BASKETBALL The Marion High School Rippers had a good 1959- 60 season, despite a somewhat slow beginning. After Coach Ted Freeman found the right combination, the boys went on to win several games. A successful basketball season implies much more than the number of games won or lost: it means boys learning dexterity in the handling of a ball, quickness in mental and physical reaction, and the spirit of give and take which we call good sportsmanship.
