Mr. Charles C. Elledge is serving his eleventh year as principal of Marion High School. In addition to being an ad- ministrator, he is a writer, having pub- lished some plays and poetry as well as articles for professional journals. He spends his summers in Boone where he is associate director and actor in the outdoor drama, Horn in the West. He is also in demand as a speaker when the duties of his school position allow him any free time. Last year he appeared in the motion picture, Thunder Road. He is a state director for the Beta Club. In almost a quarter of a century of teaching and directing students, he must have known over five thousand of them. His greatest joy is in helping young people go on to Vgeta higher education and become leaders in their communities. iv' 'VPU' 1--ull! N gf . ' if Mr. Hugh Beam, Superintendent of Marion City Schools, and his s e c r e t ar y, Miss Helen Smarr. Administration Superintendent's Message Every child in North Carolina is en- titled to a high school education. Every child living within the confines of the Marion City Administrative Unit is as- sured this birthright, provided he or she takes advantage of the educational opportunities which are available. An education is avaluable asset to every individual. To the present generation, the value will probably be greater than it has been to a.ny generation in any period from time immemorial to the present, therefore, it should behoove every high school boy and girl to firmly resolve that nothing ,will be permitted to circumvent a high school diploma. We believe that the facilities of Marion High School will compare favorably with any similar institutionin the state. Your building is modern and functionalg your educational materials and apparatus are of splendid caliber and thoroughly adequate, your teachers are well equipped, each holding either an A or G certificate, your extra-curricular acti- vities are stimulating and should meet your needs, your entire surroundings are pleasant and inviting- you should be able to come of age with your full birthright, prepared to meet any challenge you may be called upon to face as the cloak of citizenship and its re- sponsibilities falls upon your shoulders. May Godspeed be yours in all your en- deavors and undertakings. Cordially, School Board Hugh Beam Seated: Mr. Eugene Cross, Mr. Joseph L. Noyes, Mrs. Walker Blanton, Mr. Robert Twitty.
