Among the student body was a group of wary Freshmen. Now as Seniors they will tell you about their school building, and how they have broken it in for posterity, fsince they are the first class to complete four years of education in the schoolj. A During the past existence of the school, many an in- quisitive animal has made his way into the halls and classrooms for a closer look. We thought it would be a kind gesture to give one of these animals, K-9 the Ex- plorer, a guided tour of the building, introduce its occu- pants, and present its activities. We hope that everyone will catch a glimpse of the school's spirit and life as we present the 1959 Hylander. 2 . With deep appreciation for her devoted service to the students of Marion High School over a period of many years for Willingness to serve beyond the call of duty. We have heard her lend encouragement to the players at f o o t b all , basketball, and baseball games. We have seen her decorating for parties, preparing food or re- freshments when the occasion has ar is e n , and cleaning up after the parties are over for her wise counsel and gui- dance and for being our friend, we, the 1959 Hylande r staff, dedicate this edition to Mrs . Flora Homewood. AT HOME AT SCHOOL IN HER GARDEN A 3, I K zuszzr: .tt Ml' I 4 -' N gf . ' if Mr. Hugh Beam, Superintendent of Marion City Schools, and his s e c r e t ar y, Miss Helen Smarr. Administration Superintendent's Message Every child in North Carolina is en- titled to a high school education. Every child living within the confines of the Marion City Administrative Unit is as- sured this birthright, provided he or she takes advantage of the educational opportunities which are available. An education is avaluable asset to every individual. To the present generation, the value will probably be greater than it has been to a.ny generation in any period from time immemorial to the present, therefore, it should behoove every high school boy and girl to firmly resolve that nothing ,will be permitted to circumvent a high school diploma. We believe that the facilities of Marion High School will compare favorably with any similar institutionin the state. Your building is modern and functionalg your educational materials and apparatus are of splendid caliber and thoroughly adequate, your teachers are well equipped, each holding either an A or G certificate, your extra-curricular acti- vities are stimulating and should meet your needs, your entire surroundings are pleasant and inviting- you should be able to come of age with your full birthright, prepared to meet any challenge you may be called upon to face as the cloak of citizenship and its re- sponsibilities falls upon your shoulders. May Godspeed be yours in all your en- deavors and undertakings. Cordially, School Board Hugh Beam Seated: Mr. Eugene Cross, Mr. Joseph L. Noyes, Mrs. Walker Blanton, Mr. Robert Twitty. Linus 11' , xr .ge ,HIV 1 - Mr. Earl God Mr. Charles C. Elledge is serving his eleventh year as principal of Marion High School. In addition to being an ad- ministrator, he is a writer, having pub- lished some plays and poetry as well as articles for professional journals. He spends his summers in Boone where he is associate director and actor in the outdoor drama, Horn in the West. He is also in demand as a speaker when the duties of his school position allow him any free time. Last year he appeared in the motion picture, Thunder Road. He is a state director for the Beta Club. In almost a quarter of a century of teaching and directing students, he must have known over five thousand of them. His greatest joy is in helping young people go on to Vgeta higher education and become leaders in their communities. iv' 'VPU' 1--ull! While they are at their lockers is a good chance to catch a glimpse of them. Here you will learn how hard the test was, who got elected, and many other things about school life. More important than all of this, though, is the building of friend- ships and the increasing knowledge of the students from year to year. 7 GLASSES Harold Simmons, Presidentg Carolyn Huffman, Treasurer, Fern Lewis, Secretary, William Austin, Vice-president. This is it. This is our annual, our last months of preparing for jobs and colleges, and our reminiscence of good times. This is our year. We came to our new building four years ago, as Freshmen, frightened, expectant, and willing. Since then we have achieved many goals. We have been to New York, coming back the sleepiest Seniors ever but the happiest. Last year we worked hard on the Prom and this year we went to our own Prom. We have successfully pro- Ghe Senior! It is hard for us to believe that finally we are a part of some of the biggest festivities of Marion High School. The Junior Senior Prom-- this year it has been our privilege to pre- sent the Seniors with that divine gift. The National Honor Society--now being eligible for this honor club, we all sat around with crossed fingers waiting for that red- letter day when some of us were inductedg others are still waiting. Another privilege enjoyed by us Juniors is the new responsibility which the teachers seem suddenly to place on us. We are older and more interested in learn- ing. We hope we have proved ourselves Worthy of our teachers' confidence in the classroom, in the Junior play, in all our other activities of the school. Having made it through our Freshman year, we look back with a feeling of ac- complishment and see all that we learned. It took us a while to learn the tricks of the trade such as: how to run to lunch without a student council member seeing us, how to always bow and scrape to a dignifie d Senior, how to bribe another student for his place in lunch line, how to slug the coke machine, and how to get somebody to answer homeroom call for us so that we can have five extra minutes. We think we're pretty sharp on such matters now and could probably teach a few upper-classman our tricks. We know that a lot lies ahead of us in our Junior and Senior years of high school. We are looking forward to the banquets and plays we will work on with eagerness, and all that the next two years will bring. A X . While we Freshmen have not had time to make much history as yet, we have managed to make enough noise to make our presence known. We have found it possible to survive without certain things which we were led to believe were necessary parts of a freshman's equipment. We've had to do without what some of the digni- fied upperclassmen told us were essentials: locker stretchers, and study hall sheets. But equipped or not, we are here to stay ffor not more than four years we hopej. It is our sincere desire to uphold the traditions and outstanding achievements which those before us have made. There isn't one of us who is not proud to be in this fine school, and we will strive to make it better in our future years here. Physical Education is one class all students in Marion High School enjoy at some time or another. Although phys ed has its share of drudgery in exercise, it certainly has its rewards. Girls and boys alike take pride in possessing strong bodies and good health. What better way is there to gain these than in a good game of soccer, softball, volleyball, or baseball? In calisthenics the l,2,3, 4's are translated into different movements of the body. Mrs. Flora Ho mew ood, home economist, spends ten months a year instructing girls in homemaking. She is showing Mildred Hollifield, Carolyn Church, and Frankie Crisp how to concoct some exotic egg dish. 'U I -we FQ A little more salt, please, says Jeanie to Donna. The boys who take this course have made some beautiful pieces of furniture, every- thing from bookends to cedar chests and walnut cabinets. Mr. William Rogers is the commander in this department. In addition to giving instructions, he has to be ever vigilant to see that no boy saws off a finger instead of a plank.
