Co Pubiic Library MC . 0 West Court St 9 . Marion. NC 28752-3906 FOREWORD This is your 1958 Hylander . The words and pictures before you portray as best they can the events and happenings of this s chool year. But words and pictures alone cannot do justice to the human emotions experienced 'during these events. They cannot convey the joy and pride of a football team that defeated every o p p o n e n t f o r eleven straight games. Nor can they convey the nause ating disappointment experienced when we were defeated in our twelfth and final game. They can't fully express the beauty of homecoming and the festivities at the class parties. These things must be left to your own memory. Like most yearbooks, the Hylander has a theme. Due to the resemblance of our school to an industrial factory w e will in the next few pages refer to it as the plant . Mr. Elledge is the head of the plant, the teachers are the foremen and the graduating seniors are the finished products. The plant has four shifts Qfreshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniorsl, and so goes it. Here and there in this yearbook we have tried to be humorous,we hope this is to your liking. All in all we, have wor ked hard and worried long. Here then, with our good wishes, is your 1958 Hylander. The Editors CONTENTS Foreword , Dedic ation Administrat1on Faculty , , Seniors , , Superlatives Seniors , , Juniors , , Sophomores Freshmen, Clubs and Activities Football , Homecoming Basketball Spring Sports DEDICATION .. As teacher, advisor, and fri end, she has inspired, guided, and understood us. For her friendship, for her service above and beyond the call of duty, and fo r all her contributions to Marion High School, w e gratefully dedicate our 1958 Hylander to Mrs. Grace Elledge. We do so as 1 lasting mark of our deep respect and affection for her. 3 ... . - .-..,.-. .-.- The Plant ADMINISTRATION School Board: Henderson James Beam God frey Cross Noyes Blanton and Twitty Mrs. Pyatt Secretary I 0 Hugh B eam Sup e rintendant 5 I uufum .J --xml f , ? Your year is a tangled mess of paying out mo ne y , studying, paying out money, raising cain and paying out money. You will also be expected to pay out a good deal of money during the year. This is supposed to be your grandest year and rightly so. You will be instructed, enter - tained, worried over, and graduated in the short space of nine months. You should enjoy all this and probably will. You should also feel thankful for all that you have received. Mr. Elledge has estimated that we will get a return of 540.00 for every day of s c hool we attend. You have just completed four years of a fine, liberal education. These years will not only be of value financially but will give a return in knowledge, character, and happy memories. . 3 .5,,. .-. -::. JUNIORS The Junior class is composed of '72 boys, 91 girls and a couple we're not sure about. They are a f ine group of youngsters and have estab- lished a remarkable record of riots, jail breaks and confusion. At the beginning of the year they were introduced to U. S. History and found that they disliked it intensely. They struggled through and have em e r ge d from this year unscarred. They will enter school next fall as dignified S e n i o r s . We're wondering what it is that will give them dignity by then. SOPHOMORES Having just co mp l eted two years of high school the S o p h o m o r e s are extremely wise. They have in their storehouse of knowledge such usefulfacts as thewords to the school fight song, the proper procedure for dis e c ting a worm, where Will Shakespeare w as bor n and how to guard against Trichinosis. They ar e a com- paratively calm group and except for some occasional griping and snorting you would hardly know that they are around. Life holds much for this sober crowd and we extend our best wishes to them. FRESHMEN We are the Freshmen. You can easily distinguish us by our agape expressions and our inquiring manner. We have been caught in such places as the south end of northern buildings, the boiler room and the Whirlpool. As we are be- ginning to learn the tricks of the trade we realize that we have a great deal to look forward to in our future years at Marion High School. We hope that we can hold together long enough to enjoy them. At any rate,we intend to give it that old 9th grade try. Q aun- - 5 I : X ,D 5 : if .ti if. I7 ' 133 T!! :Ei S? gi. rj' i' .
