Drum ma jorette, Carolyn McBee, is followed by Rena ldia Beatty, Jane Walker, and Anne Lightfoot. ,,g,.,an-I---- From Bop to Bach The Marion High School Band, under the direction of Mr. Be rn ard Hirsch, provides delightful entertainment' for our school and community. Each year the band attends the State Mu si c Contest at Greensboro, a nd last year received a rating of excellent. The band adds a great deal of color to the pep rallies, football games, and parades with thrilling marches and half- time performances. lt is not only an out- standing marching band, but it also dis- plays splendid musicianship in the sea- sonal concerts. Officers ofthe band are: P r e s i d e n t, David Bryant, Vice-President, Martha Wykep S e c r eta r y, Carolyn McBee, Librarians, Pat Miller, Jane Walker.

1 F'- l s E i l .Nl-an Mrs. Edith Davis is the faculty sponsor of the Future Teachers of America. xy, f -JIM, W iz T 'J f Future Teachers of America The Future Teachers of America Club in Marion High School has the historic name of Elhanon , which was the name of the old institute which was operated on the present school site. It was a combination orphanage and school wh i ch ran solely from donations. Today in a million dollar high school, the students realize the importance of education and many students plan to become teachers. These students' join the Future Teachers of America in order to begin their training as early as possible. Future Teachers of America is a branch of the National Education Association and its members are honorary members of that association. Leaders of the Future Teachers attend state meetings of the N.C.E.A. in Asheville each year. ln weekly meetings the members discuss acquiring the qualifications ofa good teacher and how to use these qualifications in the classroom. Actual teaching experience is gained through substitute teaching when a faculty member is absent. This important training organization has asits officers: president, Muriel Davisp vice-presidentg Julia Mae Westallg secretaryp Linda Burginf treasurerp Becky Epley.
