They downed Hendersonville 38-13 on a Monday night and bounced back to down a strong XVilkes team 14-11 on a Friday. After those two wins came Crossnore and Forest City for the Rippers and then came the fatal game- Nlorganton. The Rippers struck quick in their fifth game of the year and moved ahead 6-0 as Howard Ledbetter continued to make himself a noted backfield star. After being trapped for about 15 yards behind the line of scrimmage Ledbetter reversed the field and went over for a touchdown that thrilled the stands. In the first four wins it had been Ledbetter and Harding in the Rippers' backfield. In this, the fifth game, it was Ledbetter and Harding again. As the half neared the Rippers marched again to a touchdown to take the half time lead of 113-0. The third quarter started and ended with a thud for the Rippers -Ledbetter had been hurt. The Rippers went on to win the game 19-0 but they lost one of their best players. Ledbetter had suffered a brain concussion that put him out for the remainder of the season. The only win after the injury of Ledbetter was the Kings Mountain game. .lim Ricks intercepted a desperation pass in the final minutes of the game and raced it back to the visitors, five yard line from where Harding went through the line on a trap for the gameis lone touchdown. In another game the Rippers lost Harding with a fractured foot. The loss of Harding put the Rippers in the worst shape of the year. Although Harding was invited to play in both the Optimist game and the Shrine Bowl game he had to decline both invitations because of his injury. Harold Condrey ended the Rippers' football season by playing an outstanding game in the Optimist Bowl. Our thoughts tonight were of our classmates we had seen on our tour, as it was the first news we had had of them in ten years. Nancy Bradburn and jiimny Loiien were celebrating their ninth anniversary at the Blushing Youth Hotel in New York City. jimmy jr. was having a fine time being tossed in the air by an old friend of the family, Bobby Morgan, the successful author of the book, 'iBeware the Curse of NVomen. We were surprised to find johnny Glenn, The boy most likely to succeedf, working as a clerk in the Piggly VViggly Stores, trying to support a wife. Vera Brown, the girl most likely to succeedf' lived up to her standards by founding the college of Hyponitics for Women. The most learned professor there was Della Hollifield. While we were stopped at the aliacetrack Tavern in the Sahara Desert run by the two famous geologists, Bay McGalliard and Harold Dean Lawing, we caught a glimpse of Anza Stroud ambling by on his camel led by Dean Robinson. VVe were informed that he was married to the wealthy princess, Sheikrette. He was on his way to donate more of his wifeis money to the School of Missions, run by jeanette England. We went on to Baghdad where Max Arrington, VVilliam Bright, and Bobby jarrett had a flourishing trade post where they sold magic carpets. Hearing a great ovation from the market place and being women of curi- osity, we rushed over to find Bill Suttle auctioning slave girls. During our stay in Paris, we were lucky to find a cafe which specialized in American food. This quaint tea shop was run by Betty Taylor, Ruby Hensley, and Geraldine Corn. Their cook was the famous chef, Buford Boss. After our delicious meal, we decided to attend a concert at Palace Theater where Marie Hager, the ballerina and Donald Boss. pianist were making their debut while studying abroad. Early the next morning we were awakened by a commotion in the street be- low. An officer, Fred Frisbee was trying to get Charles Poole. who is now campaign manager for Ceneil Ellis, woman politician. to stage his parade in some other section of town. Upon our arrival in India. the first place we visited was the palace of Prince Aly Con where joanne Landis, the most beloved of his hundred wives, lived in luxury attended by her ten hand maidens. XVhile we wandered around the vast estate, we discovered Ilarolil Condrey entertaining the other 99 wives of the Prince, by standing on his head and shooting BBls in his watch pocket. Alma Evans and Frances NVaters, two ladies of the house, were gathering ostrichis eggs for the banquet to be held that night. As we passed the garden, we saw Bobby Bright and Cecil Barlowe cleaning spider webs from the orchid tree. During the lavish banquet. one of the Prince's generals, jackie Houck, rushed in with news that johnny Bunion and Claude YVebb had been injured in a battle with the natives. This bad news was soon forgotten as Betty Lou Simmons calmed the guests with the traditional native dance. After the excitement of India, we decided to make Hawaii our next stop. Our first morning there we rose early to take a re- freshing morning dip in the cool clear water of the bay. As we approached the water. we saw jimmy Bader boarding his yacht for a day of fishing. Un our way back to the hotel, we caught sight of Patsy Teague, Peggy Lassiter, and LaTrelle Smith relaxing on the beach after their trying experiences in the divorce court where each had ohtaiiied four divorces. YVhen we arrived at the hotel. the clerk, Nellie Marler, gave us a message from Dean Boss to have dinner that night at his night club. At the beautiful. elaborate night club we dined as the orchestra of Bill Hawkins, the famous trumpet player, and his vocalist, Loretta XValker. presented lovely music. As we looked around the room we saw jane Matthews and her wealthy husband. a sardine packer, on their honeymoong also we spotted Dee Morgan. the rich play boy. sur- rounded by gold digging hula dancers. The next day as we shopped we ran across Cecil Owenby and Merle Holcombe selling grass skirts, fashioned and modeled by Thelma Austin. They directed us to the huge plant where octopus eyes are canned which is owned and operated by Georgia XVilson and Martha Davis. 61 Y ' '--- ' 'HL -'-Ili T , Brazil was our next stop. XVhile we were in search of a hotel, we heard some noises on the street which very faintly resembled that of music. Upon inquiry we found that it was Douglas Isaacs six children who had de- veloped their father's love and gift of music. Continuing on our way we passed by the winter home of Howard Ledbetter. who has long since retired from active athletics. Sports writers still look to him to pick All American teams in football. Nearing the hotel. we saw the set of the movie Love In A Nutshell, which stars the famous actor Troy Brown, known to the public as the third Valentino. The director of the production was Countess Doris Lawing, and Joan Jarrett, the famous fashion authority, designed the costumes. XVhen we arrived at the hotel, we were told of the news that Professor Tommy Laughridgc had perfected a device whereby all the stars in the heavens may be grouped into one on such nights that the moon does not cast enough radiance. The next day we visited the plantation of Janelle Harrison who mar- ried a wealthy coffee bean grower. Janelle spends her free time on the vast plantation counting coffee beans. China our next destination was full of sur- prises. As we were touring the countryside one bright day, we noticed a man laboring knee deep in water in his rice paddie. Draw- ing nearer we recognized him to be Bay Harding. Traveling further down the road. we were surprised to see a very modern look- ing factory. XVe were informed it was owned and operated by Ann XValker and Colleen Houck, who were very successful in raising silk worms. About a mile from their estate. we saw a tiny dilapidated straw lint on the hillside. XVe were amazed to learn that this was where Corinne Ellis, Nina Edwards, and Marie Hollar worked and discovered a cure for corns and in-growing toe nails. As the sun grew hotter and we continued on our way, we were suddenly overcome by a speed- ing rickshaw pulled by Gerald Murray. On the outskirts of the town we stopped at a factory to buy a pair of chopsticks. XVe learned that Buby Buchanan and Doris Moody had become very wealthy as owners of this establislnnent. Early the next day we went to the dock thirty minutes before our boat was scheduled to leave in order that we might see the fishermen leave for the morning's catch. Eugene Padgett, the owner of a great number of these boats had become wealthy by finding the great Hopeless pearl. As we walked up the gangplank of the King 62 Edward, we were greeted by Marie Turner, the friendly hostess of the ship. VVe enjoyed her company throughout the ship and our chats with Betty Lou Murray and Nada Hester, who were married to wealthy hus- bands and spend their time vacationing in distant lands. Our first night in Spain was spent in Barcelona where we took a moonlight cruise in a gondola that was rowed by Earl Styles. Alvin Uwenby stood on the bank and sere- naded the lovers with his golden voice and the mellow tones of his guitar. The next day we went to the bull fights where Ernestine Daniels. the most famous lady matador in the world, was performing. Her sister-in-law, Hilda Daniels, designed her wardrobe and arranged her schedule. At the bull fight we saw Senorita Betty Huffman who is married to Senor Milan de Salvador, the Spanish Ambassador to Busick. The following day we visited the clinic of David Pittman, who had discovered a sure cure for the tobacco habit and a lotion guaranteed to grow hair on bald heads. David told us that Eva Norton was married to a research scientist. who had made many discoveries in the field of botany. Eva, who has become a famous author, uses Spain as the setting for most of her books. Joyce Harklerode and Doris Young have perfected castanets and by selling them cheaper by the dozen have become two of the most wealthy women in Spain. Later in the day we went shopping for a lace shawl which we found at the nifty shop of Betty Jean Morgan. Her shop had become the fashion center in Spain. It was wonderful to see the Colden Cate Bridge at San Francisco as is signified that we were nearing home. Kaye Brown met us at the airport in her limousine and took us to her theater where the famous Finley Folliesv created by Mamie Finley was billed as the greatest show on earth since Ziegfeld died. Helen Early and Joanne Cheek were the popular co-stars of this production. Mary Olive Cordell, the famous artist, designed the scenery and costumes. After the show we attended a tea given by the fashionable socialite, Mary Jane Martin. The tea was in honor of Flora Couch. who had been awarded the Nobel Prize for discovering a drug that would start a man's heart back to beating after it had been stopped as long as twelve years. All of these thoughts came back to us as we sat comfortably by the fire after our pleasant journey. R A., l k lk ,- an v, . k ... 5 R7 C. 5. Inf- qish. . , 4.
