PROPI-IECY foming back to Marion, after driving around the world on the Amera-Ifuropa Highway, designed by our famous home town architects, Buddy Styles and Bill Turner, I received an invitation to go to the court house after Lawrence Parker, Chief of Police, gave me a ticket for over-parking. l was almost knocked flat by the loud blast of oratory that issued from the court room as I entered the door. On asking a clerk, jean Matthews. I discovered the sounds came from either joe Buchanan, Attorney for the State, or Marshall Dark, lawyer defending the wealthy hosiery manufacturer Mr. Norman Elliott. who was on trial before judge Allan Pless for not correctly filling out h . income tax returns. After paying my fine I went out, and walked right into a huge parade coming down Main Street. I immediately recognized the music: a march by Bobby Ricks, the famous conductor and composer. Leading the parade was the mayor, jerry England. The talk around me informed me that the parade was honoring Faye Daye who had just returned from a very successful debut at Madison Square Garden, her ac- companist, Miss Betty Ann Hemphill was with her. Her clothes were so fashionable that I felt compelled to ask a few que.tions which led me to learn that her personal clothes designers were the sisters Kat and Katie Wlilkerson, who have a chic shop in New York. I also learned that a number of Marion girls, joanne Finley, Betty Lee Willis, Ruth Arrowood, and juanita Bruner are models for their shop. On being in Marion, I couldn't resist going over to see my old Alma Mater. W'ould you believe it! The principal was Hugh Beam! He told me many things about my old schoolmates. He told me Barbara Ray was secretary to the prosperous cousins, Dottie and jimmy Ellis who own a large meat packing house whose home plant is in Marion. Another brilliant commercial student, Ellen Morris, is secretary to the mortician, Blake Suttles, who owns a molern funeral establishment across the street from the high school. Mr. Harold Mask is now the owner of the old Soda Shoppe beside the funeral home. His head soda jerk is jimmy Green. As I started to leave the school, I was almost knocked down by the souped-up ambulance that came to a sudden, jerking stop in front of the building. Out rushed the driver, Kato McCall and the nurse jane Brown who ran by me. I noticed the ambulance was one f tru Smiling Harold Sartain's used car lot. I investigated he rush and learned that the English teacher, Ruth Poole. zu' suffered a heart attack when she discovered that one of her seniors, Hubert Stanton, had made straight A's. qwell, after all he has been there long enough.j The com- mercial teacher, Betty Lou Morgan, was giving her first aii, These two teachers, it seems, were the only ones laying out of the auditorium where a famous magician show was being given by the sisters joyce and Peggy Young with their assistants Mona Stevens and Glenys Anderson. lt seems Marion has become very famous. Marion's famous dancing team, Doris Tilly and joyce Pace and the screen star Polly Davis were staying at the elegant new tourist home owned and operated by Lawrence Parker and jerry Atkins. Polly had flown from Hollywood on the Lawing Air Line, owned by james Lawing. What a coincidence that C. If. Randolph was the pilot and jewell Randolph the stewardess. It would make many more pages than there are allowed to me to tell about the many occupations of the members of the class of '51, One member who is in this nice rest home where I am staying here in Morganton, told me about a battle?-Waterloo, I believe he said, that he had just won. I leave you now, I have an order for a new canal across Panama to talk to my congress about. LAURA KEETER President of the United States 16 . lui ' J J!
