XX or r I' -X Clu 013' l' ' I0 8' 'DF MARIO HIGH SCI-IOCDL PROPI-IECY foming back to Marion, after driving around the world on the Amera-Ifuropa Highway, designed by our famous home town architects, Buddy Styles and Bill Turner, I received an invitation to go to the court house after Lawrence Parker, Chief of Police, gave me a ticket for over-parking. l was almost knocked flat by the loud blast of oratory that issued from the court room as I entered the door. On asking a clerk, jean Matthews. I discovered the sounds came from either joe Buchanan, Attorney for the State, or Marshall Dark, lawyer defending the wealthy hosiery manufacturer Mr. Norman Elliott. who was on trial before judge Allan Pless for not correctly filling out h . income tax returns. After paying my fine I went out, and walked right into a huge parade coming down Main Street. I immediately recognized the music: a march by Bobby Ricks, the famous conductor and composer. Leading the parade was the mayor, jerry England. The talk around me informed me that the parade was honoring Faye Daye who had just returned from a very successful debut at Madison Square Garden, her ac- companist, Miss Betty Ann Hemphill was with her. Her clothes were so fashionable that I felt compelled to ask a few que.tions which led me to learn that her personal clothes designers were the sisters Kat and Katie Wlilkerson, who have a chic shop in New York. I also learned that a number of Marion girls, joanne Finley, Betty Lee Willis, Ruth Arrowood, and juanita Bruner are models for their shop. On being in Marion, I couldn't resist going over to see my old Alma Mater. W'ould you believe it! The principal was Hugh Beam! He told me many things about my old schoolmates. He told me Barbara Ray was secretary to the prosperous cousins, Dottie and jimmy Ellis who own a large meat packing house whose home plant is in Marion. Another brilliant commercial student, Ellen Morris, is secretary to the mortician, Blake Suttles, who owns a molern funeral establishment across the street from the high school. Mr. Harold Mask is now the owner of the old Soda Shoppe beside the funeral home. His head soda jerk is jimmy Green. As I started to leave the school, I was almost knocked down by the souped-up ambulance that came to a sudden, jerking stop in front of the building. Out rushed the driver, Kato McCall and the nurse jane Brown who ran by me. I noticed the ambulance was one f tru Smiling Harold Sartain's used car lot. I investigated he rush and learned that the English teacher, Ruth Poole. zu' suffered a heart attack when she discovered that one of her seniors, Hubert Stanton, had made straight A's. qwell, after all he has been there long enough.j The com- mercial teacher, Betty Lou Morgan, was giving her first aii, These two teachers, it seems, were the only ones laying out of the auditorium where a famous magician show was being given by the sisters joyce and Peggy Young with their assistants Mona Stevens and Glenys Anderson. lt seems Marion has become very famous. Marion's famous dancing team, Doris Tilly and joyce Pace and the screen star Polly Davis were staying at the elegant new tourist home owned and operated by Lawrence Parker and jerry Atkins. Polly had flown from Hollywood on the Lawing Air Line, owned by james Lawing. What a coincidence that C. If. Randolph was the pilot and jewell Randolph the stewardess. It would make many more pages than there are allowed to me to tell about the many occupations of the members of the class of '51, One member who is in this nice rest home where I am staying here in Morganton, told me about a battle?-Waterloo, I believe he said, that he had just won. I leave you now, I have an order for a new canal across Panama to talk to my congress about. LAURA KEETER President of the United States 16 . lui ' J J! LEE'S MCRAE 14 MARION 12 The Rippers lost another hard fought game on October 6 to the Lees McRae B team. The Rippers scored just in the second quarter when Atkins threw a pass from the 40 yard line that hit Harding on the IS yard line who ran the remaining distance for the TD. The Rippers threatened to score again in the 3rd period but the drive was broken when a Lees McRae linesman broke through the Ripper forward wall and hit the quarterback as he was trying to hand the ball off-causing him to fumble. The linesman picked the ball up and ran 75 yards for the Bobcats first touchdown. The extra point was good and the Bobcats led by the score of 7 to 6. They scored again when their tailback got off on a 60 yard run. The extra point was again good. The Bobcats kicked off to the Rippers and Ledbetter took a handoff from Atkins and galloped 90 yards for the touchdown behind beautiful blocking by the line. The ball game ended with thc Rippers trailing by a score of 14 to 12. ERWIN S2 MARION 0 The Rippers traveled to Erwin, Tennessee to get their ears pinned back SZ-0. The Rippers held the strong Erwin eleven to a two touchdown margin at the halftime. But the Erwin boys came back out of the second half with a speed formation that the Rippers could not handle. BELMONT 32 MARION 6 The Rippers, a football team with bad luck and a losing streak, played the Belmont eleven on the Belmont field for the first time. The Belmont team was new in the con- ference, this being their first year in the conference. Run- ning from a single wing attack, the Belmont eleven ran and passed to a 32 to 6 victory over the Marion Rippers. Marion's only touchdown came when Babe', McNeely picked up a Marion fumble and scored from the 7 yard line. LENIOR 12 MARION 6 The game Coach Ditt termed as the Rippers best of the season saw Lenoir ease by them by one touchdown. The only score came as the result of a IS yard pass from Ray Harding to J. T. Davis. Howard Ledbetter got off several long runs for the Rippers while Allen Kistler caught a touchdown pass only to have it called back for offsidcs. The whole Ripper team played outstanding ball against Lenior. CANTON 39 MARION 0 The Rippers of Marion High went down to a 39-0 defeat before 2500 freezing fans in the Black Bear memorial stadium. Going into the game as underdogs, the Rippers never got started as an offensive unit. On several long runs and passes, Canton scored in all quarters with Poindexter as the big offensive gun. For Marion, McNeely, Condrcy, and H. Wilson were defensive standouts. ENGLAND LITTLE DlTT HARDING, DARK LONON HARDING 56 WAYNESVILLE 28 MARION 0 The Waynesville Mountaineers made their first trip to Marion for their clash with the Rippers of Marion High School. An outweighed and underdog team held the power- ful Mountaineers to only one score during the first half and the team left the field trailing 7-0. In the second half the Rippers fell apart and went down to a 28-0 defeat, The Mountaineers had beaten the Rippers in previous years in the Paper Bowl in 1948 19-14 and at Waynesville in 1949 I9-6. MARION 0 FOREST CITY 22 The Marion Rippers journeyed to Forest City for the last game of the season. The underdog Rippers were out- weighed and out-classed, but held the Forest City eleven to a seven point lead in the first half. The half ended 7-0 in favor of Forest City. In the second half the Forest City team passed to one touchdown in the third quarter and ran to another near the last of the period. On a bucks by Nanney, Forest City's fullback, a drive was started from which Forest City scored a third touchdown in the fourth quarter to make the score 19 to 0. As the game ended, a Forest City field goal made the final score 22-0. WILKESBORO 27 MARION 0 The Marion Rippers lost to a strong Wilkesboro eleven on the Rippers home field at a postponed date. The game was scheduled for September 8, but heavy rain caused it to be cancelled. Wilkesboro had the highest scoring team in the state, they averaged 28 points per game. The Ripper team did not get inside the Z0 yard line during the game. Defensively for Marion, it was Wilson and Stylesg offen- sively, Ledbetter and Harding. HICKORY 18 MARION 12 On September I5 the Hickory Golden Tornadoes journeyed to Marion for the first Ripper game of the sea- son. Rated as underdogs the Ripper eleven came in to a strong fourth quartet with the score tied at twelve and twelve. In the closing minutes of the game, Hickory plunged across the goal to make the score 18 to 12. Outstanding offensively for the Rippers was Howard Ledbetter who scampered across the goal for both of Marion's scores. Once on a sweep around end and again on a pass thrown by jerry Atkins. Outstanding defensively were Allen Kistler at end and Harold Condrey at guard. ASHEVILLE-BILTMORE 6 MARION 12 The Rippers won their first game of the 1950 football season against the Asheville-Biltmore Junior College, B team. The Rippers kicked off to Baby Bulldogs and on the first four scrimmages a Ripper linesman broke through into the A-B backfield and made a fumble on the 25 yard line. The Rippers took over the pigskin and on their first play from scrimmage quarterback, Ray Harding went off left tackle for S yards, then later to Howard Ledbetter, who stepped the remaining 20 yards off with ease. The Marion boys tallied again when Ray Harding tossed a 30 yard touchdown pass to Howard Ledbetter. The Asheville team scored in the third quarter but were never able to overtake the Ripper lead.
