To each student may this annual serve as a strongbox to keep the happy memories which he has from his pleasant high school days. In years to come, as the former student thumbs through his annual, may his heart be warmed by the rich memories this book holds, and may he be proud that he was once a part of this fine school. As others turn the leaves of this annual may they form a high and respectful opinion of Marion Highg its academic and social life. May they look to the fine citizens who are graduates of this school for their leaders in the responsible positions of this state. 6 DEDIC TIG .lU 3 'M ' To a friend, a scholar, and a fine man. To the man who is the true friend of all who attend Marion High School. To the one who patiently instructs his pupils day by day in order to prepare them for the Ways of life. To a man who is interested in every phase of activity in the school and who devotes the great majority of his time to the upbuilding of Marion High. To the man who for five years has shown great interest in the athletic program, in the instruction program, and who has served as the senior advisor, we wish to dedicate this annual. To E. L. Carter, first our friend, then our teacher, we the members of the Hylander Club dedicate the 1948 I-Iylander. , lr '13, f, if . Now in its third year of operation under a new program, the cafeteria has filled many an empty stomach since the adoption of the Federal Aid Program in 1945. The goal of this program is to help furnish well balanced and nourish- ing meals to the students of the High and Elementary Schools. Believe me, for twenty cents you really get a mouthful. Men can live without friends, and men can live without books, But where is the man that can live without cooks? if 179 I5 STUDENT COUNCIL MEMBERS Keith Biddix Dale Brown joretta Dcvinncy Hilda Earlcy Patsy Earlcy David Finley Robert Marks john Poteat Bobby Ricks jackie Smith Ruth Twiggs Mickey Walker l The Sfzzcfwzf Cozmvil was organized in the spring of 1944. The council representatives, which are elected by the students, render a fine service in assisting the teachers in the study halls. To take care of the students who misbehave in the study halls, a council court has been organized. This court works on the same basis as government courts and is the main factor in dis- ciplining the study halls. Among the other projects which the organization carries on are publishment of the handbook of Marion High School, which is distributed without cost to the studentsg operation of a candy store in the council room during lunch periodg regulation of traffic in the halls during change of classesg and presentation of at least one chapel program a year. This, then, is the answer to your wonclerment. The first volume of the Hylander, a plain unadorned book, . appeared in 1926, and, for a first venture into the publishing of an annual, it was a passable result. Within its two hard covers there was told the story of life in Marion High School during the gay mid-twenties. No more annuals were published after this volume for a number of years. Finally, in 1957-38, the Honor Society, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Augustus Kluntz, published the second volume of the Hylander. lt was a mimeographed annual, bound in yellow paper, and con- taining no pictures, but still giving a detailed listing of events in the High School for the year. The following year, however, the Hylander suffered another setback when Mrs. Kluntz left the school in mid-year and there was no 1939 annual. But the Hylander was not to admit defeat so easily and, in 1940, is was resurrected for the second time by the senior class. Dedicated to Mr. Beam, the annual was a sophisticated catalogue of classes, his- tories, events and activities. For the next eight years the Highlander continued to grow and expand and to become a better annual with each passing year until this 1948 Hylander, published under the sponsorship of Mr. Carter. We feel that the following prophesy taken from Mr. Beam's greetings in the 1938 annual, has been fulfilled: This publication can and will become a vital factor in student activities. ln purpose it will serve as a reminder to pupils-of events which were important-and of ideals which will become stimulating-as an influence for additional achievements. The club was kept active during the 1930's by participating in Triangular Debates over the state, but in 1940, due to war-imposed obstacles and the temporary cessation of the Triangular Debates, the club was disbanded in the school. Last year, however, under the expert guidance of Mr. Carter, the Debating Club was again brought back into existence and sent two teams to the Triangular Debates. The Marion negative team, composed of Robert Marks, John Poteat, and Glenna Byrd as alternate, met the Forest City affirmative in Asheville, while the Marion affirmative team, composed of Lynn Crawley, Betsy Bowman, and L. D. Atkins, Jr. as alternate, met the Lee Edwards negative in Forest City. Duc to inexperience, both of the Marion teams met defeat, but the two opposing teams went on to the finals at Chapel Hill to become the State winners, Not in the least, disheartened, the club is again work- ing for the Triangular Debates, and they have their hopes of making a better showing this year than last. 47 FUTURE TEACHERS CLUB . The band received a 2 rating in the North Carolina State Music Festival for each of the years 1936, 1937, and 1938. By 1938 the band had increased to forty- seven members. During the 1938-39 year, the Band Mothers' Club helped the band greatly by raising S1500 for much needed uniforms. In 1938-39 the band captured a 1 rating in the State Contest and advanced to the National Regional contest in Charlotte, where they received a 2 rating. When Mr. Hirsch was inducted into the armed forces in 1942, Mr. R. Glenn Palmer came to direct the band. There were no contests because of the war, but the band made up for this by participating in a number of activities at home. 1944 saw Mr. Palmer also entering the armed forces and the band luckily secured Miss Mabel Beach as director. In 1946 the state contests were resumed, with the M. H. S. band receiving a 2 rating. Everyone was joyous at having Mr. Hirsch again in the fall of 1946. He proved his ability when, after a few months, he led the band to a 1 rating in the Greensboro contest. The band was especially active that year attending football games, giving concerts and attending the Apple Blossom Festival in Hender- sonville. This year the band is again on the upgrade, having performed at football games and having given two concerts. The band doesn't consider this success how- ever. It is only a milestone to the making of North Carolina's best High School Band. The Marion Chapter was organized in 1930 under the sponsorship of Mrs. Augustus Kluntl and during its first year of existence, eight members of the l93Il class were inducted into the society. Through the succeeding seventeen years, from 1930 to 1947, students have been inducted into the society on the average of ten a year. Mrs. Kate Finley, of the present school faculty, became sponsor of the Marion Chapter in 1944. The four standards by which a student is judged for membership into the society are KU character, 121 service, 135 leadership, and Q45 scholarship. The students who are eligible are voted into the Society by the faculty who use the above standards as their measuring rule. The induction ceremonies take place in the early spring. England carried the ball to the 2 yard line where Rader carried it over for the score. The Ironmen chalked up a touch- down in the third quarter and made their extra point. The game was fought on even terms from this point until late in the fourth quarter when England and Rader led a march down to the 20 yard line Where Rader passed to Packett for the winning touchdown. England and Paekett played some of the best ball of the season and the entire backfield turned in a good game. Rader made three of the Ripper scores. jackie Lonon caught passes in the end zone for other touchdowns. The Rippers were almost flawless, as Forest City failed to get inside the Ripper 40 yard line. The guards were the mainstays of the line with Brooks and Moody doing a wonderful job. In the backfield the play of England and Robinson, although neither scored, was exceptionally good. DAVIS BOYS' BASKETBALL THIS year, as always, Marion placed on the hardwood one of the conference's strongest teams. Four of last year,s starting quintet returned to roam Western Conference courts for the orange and black team this winter. Frank Pace, forward and center who was high scorer for the '46-'47 Rippers, ran high in the scoring race again and proved to be one of the team's most outstanding players. The other forward spot was helped by little Ray Robinson, a talented and scrappy athlete. Claude Flack, also a small man, was another outstanding player. Combining a brilliant floor game with a deadly eye for the basket, Claude has turned in sterling guard play for the Rip- pers for three years. Donald Clayton, along with Millard Robinson operated from both forward and center. Both are lettermen, and possess offen- sive and defensive abilities. Kirby Rader also was a leading candidate in the starting line-up. A versatile player, Kirby can play al- most anv position. Another letterman is Freddv Kirk- land who received a large share of action at guard. Closely following these men were Guy Smith, Bill Burnette, Carl Walker, and Wilburn Hammet. All of these boys have several more years at Marion High and all have what it takes to make excellent Ripper basketball players.
