' Sm J!! Axvtgg Z 4 y SEN wk After completing eight years in the Gram- mar Grades, we entered High School as Fresh- men in September, 1943. We w e re ninety - nine strong, and determined to conquer that before us. As our leaders for the year, we elected Sara Johnson as President, Jack Goode as Vice- President, Ruby Byrd as Secretary, and Polly Hawkins as Treasurer. We would not attempt to say what the teachers thought of us, but the opinion we had of our- selves was not to be ques- tioned. When we became Soph- omores, we began to real- ize we were really a part of the High School, having I CD R S CLASS HISTORY WHITE BYRD BANKS CRAWLEY LYNN CRAWLEY , BETTY LOU BANKS RUBY BYRD . . BOBBY WHITE . had the rougher edges removed during our Freshman year. We began this year by electing officers: Robert White, President, Wayne Nor- man, Vice-President, Melba Simpson, Secretary, and Guy Nichols, Jr., Treasurer. The class en- rollment was eighty-three and much to our de- light thirteen of our members were on the foot- ball team. Jack Goode brought honor to us by being chosen All-Conference end. As Juniors our class became more active than heretofore. We were confronted with the new responsibilities and opportunities, in the band, on the school paper, in clubs, and on the foot- ball and basketball teams. Jack Goode became SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS . .. , ,. . President Vice-President . ,. , Secretary ,. , ,, , ,, .,.., , . . . .Treasurer our President, Lynn Crawley and Wayne Nor- man, Representatives, and James Norton, Sec- retary and Treasurer .... This year our class was especially honored by having fourteen of its members elected into the National Honor Society: L. D. Atkins, Jr., John Beaman, Ruby Byrd, Lynn Crawley, Betty Davis, Joanne Field, Lois Ann Finley, Polly Hawkins, John Kluttz, Hazel McCurr, Harry Neighbors, Melba Simp- son, Lena Swann, and Robert White . . . In the spring of '46 we gave our class play, Black Cats, a whirlwind farce in three acts. A large audience was entertained by this amateur per- formance . . . During this year four members of the class entered the Armed Forces: Guy Nichols, Jr., Zelotes Finley, Jack Goode, and William Stanley . . . The climax of the year came when we entertained the Senior Class of '46 at the Junior-Senior Banquet. This was an occasiot long to be remembered, as it was the first really big event of our own planning since entering High School. Now at last we have reached that cherished last year. Sixty-one out of a former class of ninety-nine have become Seniors, dignified or otherwise. At the beginning of the year we chose as our representatives: Lynn Crawley, President, Betty Lou Banks, Vice-President, Ruby Byrd, Secretary, and Robert White, Treasurer. To add to our prestige and honor these seniors: Frances Pool, Margaret Atkins, Glenn Mur- dock, and Betty Hope Gibson were elected into the National Honor Society . . . Our football team, mainly Seniors, won a much-deserved v. if re L 1 Il I A.. ie N - A T W JUDY NORMAN MASCOT 'D' Y, M M 3' 413: :.r f PATRICK LOGAN MASCOT second place in the Western Conference. We had many outstanding players on the team, such as Dean Padgett who gained a position on the All-State team, Lynn Crawley, Bill Burleson, and Fuzz England played outstanding ball the entire season. At the beginning of the year, to our great joy, lights and steel bleachers were in- stalled on the football field and we enjoyed a privilege not before permitted at Marion High School - night football games. The performance of the High School Band, of which many mem- bers are seniors, added pleasure to the games. lt has all meant a great deal to us, the fun and even the hard work, and so it is not with- out regret that we say goodbye to Marion High School. May the remainder of our years be as happy. Our teachers have set an admir- able example for us by their unselfishness and sincere devotion to duty and we shall always remember them as friends and helpers in our High School days. -13 LAWRENCE DeWITT ATKINS, JR. A large number had arranged to get together and it was a happy occasion for all of us. We spent hours reminiscing and trying to learn the whereabouts of those not present. Lynn Crawley presided, as in the old days, and asked everyone present for an account of his life since we had last assembled and for any information as to those not able to attend. Lynn has held many political offices and is now serving his second term as governor of North Carolina. Naturally no one had changed his course very much since we were a very determined group even in 1947. Bill Neighbors, the Walter Winchell of today, flew down from New York with news of practically everyone. He in- formed us that our class was well represented in Washing- ton, both as officials and secretaries. Wayne Norman, needless to say, is still playing the piano, but has acquired a band and managed to keep some of our Marion High talent together. Bomme Nesbitt is singing with him now. Frances Pool home for vaca- tion from Columbia University, ',- told us that she has deserted her classroom to go see Fuzz Eng- land play pro football with the A Chicago ,'Bears and that Jack 5 Laughridge's band was still the 1 most popular one in New York. She also told us of having seen Joanne Field iust after her suc- ccssful concert tour of Europe. We were all thrilled over hav- ing real screen actresses in our group. Betty Tyler, home from California for the first time in years, told us of her career in , C.. 22' pictures and that she still often saw Ruby Wilkerson who was continuing her exciting career at an adjoining studio. Dean Padgett and Bill Burleson had settled for coaching after their exciting years of spectacular college football. Betty Banks is Physical Educational Director at Duke. L. D. Atkins, now a director of Marion High School Band, Bobby White, Director of Music at the University of North Carolina, John Kluttz, who finally moved back to South Carolina, is very active in politics, and John Beaman, who had to abandon his music for his lumbering business, seemed to take up where they left off ten years ago. The highlight of the evening was when Betty Wall made her appearance. We had not hoped she could get away from New York during rehearsals. Her plays have all been successful. She is now directing as well as acting. Ruby Byrd, Hazel Buchanan, and Melba Simpson arrived breathless after their hurried trip. Those three have man- aged to stay together and are equally successful as Powers Models in New York. The proportionate number that had acquired husbands and wives smiled at each other when those who had wandered afar in their chosen careers recounted their adventures and experiences. Among them were Charlotte Huffman, Estelle Bradley, Dixie Lee Mace, Margaret Burnette, Earn Black, Ray Poteat, Earl Helms, Joe Guthrie, and Earl Mickle. Betty Hope Gibson, Lena Swann, and Lois Ann Finley told us of the wonderful improvements at Marion High School. After the final goodbyes were said, I was indeed glad that I had deferred my trip to New York to see my pub- lisher about my latest song for the reunion of the class of '47. Yours sincerely, MARGARET ATKINS. LAST WILL AND STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA, McDOWELL COUNTY, TOWN OF MARION Knowing full well that we are approaching the end of our High School career, and realizing that our vast and val- uable possessions may lead to bitter contention among those who aspire to be our heirs, our Last Will and Testament is this day drawn up and stated as follows: The largest and most important of our belongings is advice, and not wishing to be partial to our heirs, we leave equal shares to the Juniors, the Sophomores, and the Freshmen. Our advice is to keep ever before them the shining example of the illustrious class of '-17. Of course, in the very nature of things, no succeeding class can ever come up to ours in achievement, but let them all aim at our enviable record. Let our successors as Emerson advises, Hitch their wagon to a star. We will be their star and they need only supply the wagon. To the School Board we bequeath our sincere thanks for their interest in our educations. To Mr. Beam we leave our undying gratitude and thanks for making our school days pleasant, as well as educational. To our Teochers we leave our sincere thanks for all they have done for us. Also our deepest sympathy for the loss they have suffered through our departure. We grieve for you O'Teachers, when we think of your having to teach these present Juniors, next year's Seniors, who may be foolish enough to imagine themselves capable of walking in our footsteps. To the School we leave the valuable suggestion that the desks we have used be put into one room, which shall 24- I a'-' 1 become a museum of precious relics, for posterity to gaze upon with awe and reverence. Strangers will, in future, no doubt, visit this museum, at a small admission price of 25 cents, which would bring in ample funds to pay for all the buildings that will be added to the Marion School System in coming years. In addition to these general bequests, there are only a few personal ones we will mention here: 'I, Betty Tyler, leave my wit to June Carrigan. I, lawrence Atkins, leave my musical ability to Billy Wayne Suttle. I, Paul Ross, leave my ability to say the right thing at the wrong time to Jimmy Robb. We, Jeannette Broome and Goldie Cooper, leave our lasting friendship to Margaret Curtis and Betty Jo Creasy. TESTAMEIXIT I,-Margaret Atkins, leave my position as maiorette to Betty Jo Sentell. I, Dean Padget, leave my ability to my son. I, Bobbe Jean Nesbitt, leave my ability to drive Buicks to Sara Anne Proctor and Glynn Lambeth. l, Earl Mickle, leave my position of drum major to Ralph Frog Fender. I, Wayne Norman, leave my ability to play the piano to my sister Jeanne. I, Ruby Byrd, leave my stuclious ways to Glenna June Byrd. I, Joanne Field, leave my slow ways to David Linon. I, Sammy Proctor, leave my innocent grin to Donald Clayton. I, Bette Davis, leave my ability to get beaux to Barbara Atkins. I, Lynn Crawley, leave my friendly disposition to Howard Biggerstaff. I, Nicholas Devinney, leave my quiet ways to Lila Earle Harrison. I, John Kluttz, leave my size to Connelly Miller. I, Ruby Wilkerson, leave my soft voice to Opal Gibson. l, Bobby White, leave my sense of humor to John Laughridge. I, John Beaman, leave my bold and brazen ways to Lealon Lytle. I, Doris McCurry, leave my athletic ability to Becky Hemphill. I, Edward Black, leave my position as manager of the foot- ball squad to Dennis Ayers. We, Estelle Bradley, Dixie Lee Mace, and Charlotte Huffman leave our good times and friendship to any three girls that can get along as well as we have. To the audience here this evening we bequeath our con- gratulations on the fact that they have had the good fortune to be present at the class day exercise of the great Class of '47. The memory of this evening will always be something to cherish. ln the years to come it will be a mark of dis- tinction for anyone to be able to say he or she was present on this memorable occasion. ROBINSON MORGANTON 18 - MARION 12 For the first and best game of the season, the Rippers iourneyed to Morganton. Both teams played a hard game, neither side scoring until the fourth quarter. With the score tied 12-12 and only two minutes left to play, McFadden of Morganton intercepted a pass, intended for Davis, and scored the winning touchdown, mak- ing the count 18-12. Rader and Padgett scored the Marion touchdowns. while Ken Toney, Eng- land and Hendley led the defense. LENOIR 14 - MARION 13 Clashing on the home field under the new lights for the first time, the Marion Rippers fought a game battle against Lenoir, but lost 14-13. Although outplaying Lenoir all through the game, the Rippers seemed to lack the field generalship to drive an to victory. Every one who saw action played fine ball! MARION 8 - SHELBY 6 The initial win of the season came when the hard smashing Rippers came from behind to win over Shelby 8-6. The half found Marion out- played and trailing 6-2, but, as the second half got underway, the Rippers hit their stride and played heads up football. Ken Toney scored on a pass from Rader, the lone and winning Ripper touchdown. The deciding two points came when Ralph Toney blocked a Shelby punt, which rolled out of the end zone for an automatic safety. MARION 13 - NEWTON O On their own gridiron, the Newton Red Devils were defeated 13-O by the Rippers. Both teams played evenly matched ball until the fourth quarter when Rader and England carried the ball in a 70-yard drive to the 2-yard line where England carried it over for a score. A few plays later, Norman added a second touchdown after Ken Toney intercepted a Newton pass. Hendley, Burleson, and Padgett played fine ball in the line. MARION 19 - HICKORY O In the homecoming game, the Rippers clashed with the Hickory team, defeating them 19-0. Although the score was only 7-O at the half, the Rippers came back strong and pushed across two more touchdowns. The Hickory team run- ning from a T formation provided one of the most thrilling homecoming games ever played at Marion. R. TONEY RADER ATKINS 58' MARION I3 - CHERRYVILLE 7 Playing one of the strongest teams to appear on the Marion field this year, the Rippers de- feated the Cherryville Ironmen I3-7. Cherryville scored in the first few minutes of the game to go in'front 7-O. Getting hold of themselves, the Rippers came back to make the score 7-6, Nor- man going over for the score. Again in the second quarter, Norman scored, racing 65 yards for the tally. Padgett converted the extra point. Late in the fourth quarter, the Ironmen started a drive that carried to the Rippers' 25 yard line, but which was broken up when Moody covered a Cherryville fumble. The standouts for the Rip- per line were Hendley, Crawley, Moody, and Burleson, while Norman, England, and Rader led the backfield. MARION 20 - VALDESE 6 The Valdese eleven was defeated by the Rippers in a very thrilling game. England, Nor- man, and Rader each scored a touchdown while Padgett kicked the extra points. In the third quarter Baker from Valdese made the only touchdown for his team, making the final score 20-6. MARION 23 - N. C. S. D. 7 Battling a hard fighting N. C. S. D. team, the Marion Rippers won over the Bears by a score of 23-7. The Bears, led by Tuttle, hit pay dirt FOOTBALL ENGLAND HENDLEY early in the first quarter to go in the lead 7-O. Late in the first quarter Padgett caught a pass and raced thirty yards for a touchdonw. Through the rest of the first half, both teams played on even terms with the score tied 7-7. Marion took charge in the second half with Rader and Eng- land each scoring a touchdown, and Burleson trapping one of the Bears for a safety. CUTHBERTSON -5 FOOTBALL In BETTY HOPE GIBSON Homecoming Sponsor MARION 38 - HENDERSONVILLE 6 The Marion Rippers racked up their fourth consecutive win at Hendersonville when they defeated the Hendersonville eleven 38-6, on a rain-soaked field. Practically every man on the Ripper squad saw action. Rader, Cuthbertson, and Robinson were outstanding in the backfield, while Burleson, Crawley and Hendley played fine ball in the line. LONON RUBY WILKERSON Homecoming Sponsor MARION 44 - RUTHERFORDTON 'I3 Before an estimated crowd of 3,000, the Rip- pers defeated Rutherfordton 44-I3. Packet, R. Norman, England, and Rader scored the touch- downs, while Padgett scored the extra points. Regardless of the score and the fact that almost all the Rippers saw action, it was a thrilling game until the final whistle. 60- ---:-- ' From the hot Fridays to the bleak November days, Marion High students and alumni thrilled to the deeds of a Marion High team that will be hard to forget. Managers for the Rippers last fall were Edward Black and Dennis Ayers. There were losses, but even more victories. We watched in beautiful football weather as the Rippers, green and inexperienced, outplayed a heavier Morganton eleven only to set back in the closing minutes T8-12. Then came the second hard blow as an outplayed Lenoir eleven won a hard fought game by a one point margin. Another close call from Shelby when Ralph Toney's blocked kick saved the day. A green Valdese team romped on by the Rippers. Next came N. C. S. D., led by a great back, Tuttle, scoring first on the Rippers to have the ball only four times the first half before going down in the last half 23-7. Then amidst the puddles of rain- soaked Hendersonville field, the Rippers over- ran a smaller Hendersonville team-followed the next week by another easy victory over Rutherfordton. The Red Devils of Newton af- forded another close call as England and Rader sparked the offensive power. A homecoming gathering seeing Hickory go down under the might of the Rippers 'I9-O. The Cherryville Iron- men kept the crowd on their toes by scoring in the opening minutes in lightning like fashion only to be overcome as R. Norman showed his heels and raced 65 yards for the winning touch- down. The Rippers looked doomed in their grand final as two passing teams met on a sandy, rain- soaked field, but coming through in fine fashion the last minutes, thanks to the great All-State end, Padgett. Then Padgett, Lonon, Crawley, Burleson, Moody, R. Toney and Hendley played fine defensive ball, backed by a great backfield of Rader, K. Toney, R. Norman, England, Robin- son and Cuthbertson. The seniors winding up their High School careers are Padgett, Burleson, and Crawley. We'll get them all next year, Coach!
