That was the day when we first came to high school. We were, with- out a doubt, the most excited and the greenest bunch of freshmen to have ever entered this school. XVe seemed to be everywhere at once and yet we were not in the right place. Finally, our kind, con- siderate teachers came to our rescue and helped us find our way around. After that, with the help of the upperclassmen we were able to go through the year in high spirits until, on the account of the laps, we had to give up one of our best teach- ers, Coach Walters, to the Army Air Force. This gave us a more serious out- look and we began to study harder and think about becoming Sophomores. OF THE SENIOR CLASS We returned the next year to start our duties as Sophomores. With most of the green worn off we made a good start by electing as our leaders: Charles Mask, President, Ruth Byrd, Vice-President, Zane Dalton. Secretary, and Betty .lo Flack, Treasurer. We were now feeling like a part of the high school since we had com- pleted one year. Again this year we were called upon by Uncle Sam to give up our friend and principal, Mr. Holland, to the U. S. Navy, but we were very fortunate in getting Mr. Poole to take his place. With his guidance we struggled through this year dreaming of being juniors. Now our dream had come true. We were leading the life of juniors. We really lived up to our name of being jolly and having fun. We took important places in

the band, on the school paper, in the clubs, on football and basketball teams and we entered into almost every other activity of our school. We boosted Hoyt Reel and Ralph Toney on the varsity football team. We were honored by having five of our members, Buddy Bost, Mary Catherine Se- bastian, Addie Lee Gaddy, Frances Eng- land, and Carl Pemberton, jr., elected to the National Honor Society. We were really excited and proud to accept all the advantages of juniors. We had lived for our Junior-Senior Day. It was one of the happiest and most wonderful days of our high school career. From the time we were Freshmen we had looked forward to this great occasion. It is one, among many, of our most wonderful memories. Along with it, is our junior Play, The Yellow Shadowf' We were proud to discover such a large number who possessed real acting ability. With the help of Mrs. Pemberton we were able to present one of the best plays ever given by juniors. CWe think, anywayj After all these experiences we proved ourselves capable of taking on the title we cherished most, Senior. At last the top had been reached. We were the dignified Seniors. Well, Seniors anyway! It was hard to be dignified when we were beginning so enthusiastically a new part of our life. As Seniors we really began to feel as if we had grown up. We looked back upon all the outstanding his- tory of our high school and wondered if we would ever be as happy again. We remembered our football and basketball teams. We thought of our Senior Play, our Senior activities, class night, banquet, and then we peeped into the future when we would graduate. We thought of our class- mates, our teachers, and friends. This year we had been brought closer to war and its meaning because four of our class- mates, Roan Norman, jack Laughridge, D. Holt, and Bill Roland had left us for the Armed Forces. It was with a sad heart that we said adieu to Marion High, but we knew that we would cherish the wonderful memories of our school days, and Marion High would always have a special place in our hearts.
