THE SENIOR CLASS SENICJR CLASS HISTORY Fort vi2ARs WE HAD looked forward to entering Marion High School, and when September, 1940, finally came, we, with proud hearts hastened to school. Yes, we were to be High School stu- dents! But what a sight met our eyes! With the main part of the building almost completely de- stroyed by fire, the outlook of our high school career did not appear too promising. But even the darkest cloud has a silver lining. Our silver lin- ing proved to be the forethought of our Super- intendent and Board of Education in a carefully planned program whereby our school work would not be interrupted by this misfortune. Of course the first year we didn't have the use of all the building, but we were permitted to use the east wing, the Scout Hut, the basement of the Presbyterian Church, and the community build- ing. This was a handicap to the teachers as well as the students. Someone was always coming to class tardy and using the excuse that the distance was too far to make on time. The year had its handicaps, but with the help of Mike McCall as President, William Coone as Vice-President, Bruce Cartier as Secretary, and Murray Craven as Treasurer, the majority of our class was at last ready to tackle the second year as sophomores. We returned in the fall to begin our sophomore year with a determination that this would be one of our most successful sessions. With the fresh- man year behind us, we felt that we were a neces- sary part of the high school. The building had been rebuilt by this time, and we were again in it rushing up and down the halls and into classrooms.
