TWITTY 8 CLASSES THE SENIOR CLASS SENICJR CLASS HISTORY Fort vi2ARs WE HAD looked forward to entering Marion High School, and when September, 1940, finally came, we, with proud hearts hastened to school. Yes, we were to be High School stu- dents! But what a sight met our eyes! With the main part of the building almost completely de- stroyed by fire, the outlook of our high school career did not appear too promising. But even the darkest cloud has a silver lining. Our silver lin- ing proved to be the forethought of our Super- intendent and Board of Education in a carefully planned program whereby our school work would not be interrupted by this misfortune. Of course the first year we didn't have the use of all the building, but we were permitted to use the east wing, the Scout Hut, the basement of the Presbyterian Church, and the community build- ing. This was a handicap to the teachers as well as the students. Someone was always coming to class tardy and using the excuse that the distance was too far to make on time. The year had its handicaps, but with the help of Mike McCall as President, William Coone as Vice-President, Bruce Cartier as Secretary, and Murray Craven as Treasurer, the majority of our class was at last ready to tackle the second year as sophomores. We returned in the fall to begin our sophomore year with a determination that this would be one of our most successful sessions. With the fresh- man year behind us, we felt that we were a neces- sary part of the high school. The building had been rebuilt by this time, and we were again in it rushing up and down the halls and into classrooms. CLASS HISTORY-jCont'dl The sophomore class contribution to the foot- ball team was jim Bryson, Ned Noblitt, and Charles Ray Baker. Our contribution to dramatics was the presentation of Mammy's Little Wilti Rose. This year our oHicers were, Mike McCall, Presi- dent, Zane Dalton, Vice-President, Margaret Westmoreland, Secretary, and Bruce Cartier, Treas- urer. As juniors, our activities really began. Under the direction of Coach Hugh Beam and his assistant, Dan Hitchcock, the football team won the All-Conference Championship Title. It was during our junior year that the names, Charles Bolick, jack Beck, Ellis Norton, Ernest Poole, and Roy Hendly were added to the Serv- ice Flag of Marion High. In the spring of '42 we gave our class play, Don't Take MY Penny. By the helpful sug- gestions of Miss Hewell, Miss Bryan, Mrs. Hilde- brand and the splendid Cooperation of the cast, we gave a play that we were proud of. The next highlight of the year was junior- Senior Day. The juniors and seniors were given a whole day off in which to celebrate. In the morn- ing we took part in sports, in the afternoon we at- tended the theatre, and in the evening we ended our celebration with a party. Any observer could safely say that this was enjoyed more than a junior-Senior Banquet would have been. The greatest honor that Marion High School bestows upon its students was given to Elaine Pen- ninger, Mike McCall, and Howard Toney when they were elected into the Marion Chapter of the National Honor Society. Whatever success we attained as juniors was due largely to the interest and hard work of our sponsors, Miss Bryan, Mrs. Lonon and to our of- ficers, Ned Noblitt, President, jim Bryson, Vice- President, jack Walker, Secretary, and Alyce Houck, Treasurer. At last the title Senior was bestowed upon us. It was a great responsibility to live up to this name, but we got off to a good start by electing the following othcers: Howard Toney, President, Mike McCall and jack Walker, Vice-Presidents, and Ned Noblitt, Secretary-Treasurer. To add to our honor as seniors, Kathryn Ballew, Edith Bid- dix, Daphne Goodman, Lois Nance, and Millie Poteat were elected into the Marion Chapter of the National Honor Society. During the football season a contest was held to elect Miss Ripper. The whole school par- ticipated in this contest and elected Vivian Mor- gan, a girl from the Senior Class, Miss Ripper of '45. Several stars were added to the school's Service Flag during our senior year. These stars repre- sented Charles Ray Baker, Charlie McGimpsy, james Banks, and james Ray Robinson. These boys along with many others are fighting to make a better world for us as we finish our senior year and go out into the world as young men and WOIDCH. . . MILLIIE POTEAT, Hzirorzmz. SENIGR CLASS PROPHECY SoMi5T1M12 AGO while attending a lecture given in New York by the famous author and lecturer, Kathryn Ballew, a former classmate of mine, I ran into none other than the celebrated traveling correspondent, Marjorie Hemphill, and between the three of us we dug up bits of information, pertaining to the activities of our former class- mates. Marjorie had just returned from the West Coast where she had been sent to interview California's Governor, Roby Conley. Governor Conley took her to Hollywood to interview some celebrities there, and passing through Los Angeles they stopped off to visit Farm Administrator, Sam Homewood. Out at the M. G. M. lot, they were greeted by the beautiful leading lady, Vivian Morgan, and the idol of the screen, Bill Ledbetter. Vivian was very eager to finish her new picture, and return to New York where her fiance, Red Walker and his Sweet Sentimentalistsu were playing a long engagement at the famous Club 21. At the War- ner Brothers' lot, Marjorie and Governor Conley enjoyed watching comedienne jean Sentell act in several scenes from her latest production, Miss Bliss. Incidenrally, also working in the picture were jack Walker and his famous swing band, and Monty Haire. the George Murphy of our day. As Governor Conley was driving Marjorie to the airport they passed Hollywood's famous Mo- cambo and stepped for a lfzief chat with the co- owners Homer Walker and Zane Dalton. They gave her messages for Edwari Poole, the Nation's No. 1 Test Pilot, whom she planned to interview in Miami. I told Marjorie and Kathryn about my recent visit to the busy city of Washington, where I was surprised to find so many of my former class- mates. Working as secretaries were: Annie Mae McCurry, Virginia Lee Hensley, Wilma Bright, Sue Gaddy, and Nora Crawley. Believe it or not, Hazel Owenby is the Presidents Private Secretary and she keeps up with the gossip there as well as she used to do in Mr. Poole's office at home. Helen Kanipe, working as Receptionist at the White House, said she had noticed among the guests there, Senators B. H. Laughridge, Paul Flack, and Speaker of the House, Otis Sullivan. Working with head nurse, Lucille Fisher, at Washington's largest hospital were Nurses Evelyn Ross, Audrey Conley, Iris Ayers, and Betsy Lee Erwin. Doctors Howard Toney and Earl Estes were also on the staff of this famous hospital. Leaving Washington, I fiew to our own won- derful State of North Carolina. Back in our home town of Marion, one of the first persons I met was Charles Estes, Proprietor of Charlie's Soda Shop. He gave me information about many more of my classmates. Mike McCall has been very successful in the undertaking business which he has established in Raleigh. Harry Miller is the owner of a big chain of grocery stores and David Ross is Park Commis- sioner of North Carolina. Koy Mac Laughridge is a very 5. 'cessful engi 'eer in Detroit, and E. M. Britt is the owner of an airplane factory in Balti- more. While Charles and 1 were talking, Gene Toney, a conductor on the Southern Railroad came in. On his daily runs he had picked up bits of gossip SENICDR CLASS PROPHECY about others in our class. Edith Biddix, at home for a much needed rest is a dietitian at Duke Hos- pital. Margie Biggerstaif and Millie Poteat, as good friends as ever, are operating a Beauty Salon, and Russell Horton, part owner of the Carolina Trailways, frequently stops in Marion. joe Gaddy is the proud owner of a dairy farm located just outside of Marion. In the midst of our conversation the radio blasted forth with Wayne Willis and his Corn- fed Rhythm Boys, now taking the place of the Briarhoppers at Charlotte's 50,000 watt station. Charles tells me that Royce McNeill is a tech- nician there. Speaking of radio, we immediately thought of the world-famous comedians, james Ray Robinson and Bruce McNeal. Also starring in his own radio show is vocalist, Claude Jarrett. News Commentator, Billy Flack, has also made a name for himself in radio. After I had given out all the information I had picked up about our classmates, Kathryn told us some interesting facts. She said that concert pianists, Daphne Goodman ant. Sue Martin are touring Europe, The New York Philharmonic or- chestra, which boasts of oboe soloist Mildred Leonard, is touring all the large cities in this country. With the Metropolitan Opera Company is coloratura soprano, Thelma Autrey, contralto, Lucille Hemphill, and baritone, Leonard Wilson. Making a success as models are Margaret West- moreland, Virginia Robinson, and Margaret Honey- cutt. Kathryn. said that she had just seen the Broad- way production of Carmen, starring actor Glenn Rector, and ballet dancer Alta Godfrey, and that it was destined to become a big hit. By reading the newspapers we had found out that Roan Norman is manager of the New York Giants, and jim Bryson and Ned Noblitt are playing professional football for the Washington Red Skins. Rose Mary Hensley, Peggy Ca rrigan, Zelma Burleson, and jewel Harris are Physical Instructors at Cornell, Duke, Carolina, and Southern Cali- fornia Universities, respectively. Elaine Penninger is librarian at St. Mary's, and Frances Smith, Dot Neighbors, Nell Stiles, and Betty Robb are all school teachers. Marjorie, Kathryn, and I were proud of the fact that several of our former classmates have remained in the services of our country. Robert Hawkins and Floyd Broome are serv- ing as Chaplains in our Army, B. Davis and Aaron Stroud are in the submarine Service of our Navy, and Walter Reel is the typical Marine. jean- ette Smith is an officer in the XXp1Cs now, and wouldn't leave for any other position. Because this information proved so interesting, Marjorie, Kathryn, and I forgot that we had work of our own to do. A glance at our watches told us that it was already f te, but before i.',' e departed, we knew that someday, as soon as possible, we were going to have a class reunion .... Until that day I hopefully remain Your Senior Class Prophet, Lois NANCE. 'V' . ,O w:,,,s'Nwsv . 1 ec A 'iv J Sd!!! The Rippers officially opened their season with the experienced Canton Eleven to be defeated in a bitter and hard-fought game. After being downed by their worthy op- ponents for four consecutive games, the Rippers made a brilliant come back by toppling Spruce Pine, N. C. S, D., and Hendersonville. The game with Bessemer City was probably the most desperately fought game of the season. After some of the best players were taken out in the third quarter, the team could only play defensive ball. Bouncing back from the defeat with Bessemer City, the team had what one might say a field day with Cranberry High. But Forest City proved to be a worthy opponent, not equal, however, to the Rippers The final game of the season was played with Lenoir. The opponents found the Rippers line hard and unyielding, but when the opponents resorted to passes they toppled the Rippers in a game that neither team will forget soon. The Rippers concluded their season, while not so near the top, yet with plenty of experience to help them next year. Probably the three most outstanding players of the team were jim Bryson fthe man who cracked the linel, Red Wztlker fwho by the way was our Captain, and all-confer- ence mauj, and Ng Noblitt, who also played outstanding ball. The boys receiving sweaters were Red Walker, the best blockerg jim Bryson, best all-round player, and Ralph Toney, the best scrub. I fn gf ' f ?v1F ,gui .fat ,.
