SENIOR CLHSS HISTORY IT was in the bright, sunny September of 1939 that the majority of the graduating class of '43 entered high school as freshmen. Being fresh- men we thought everyone was looking at us and felt we could do nothing right. During the winter our school building burned and we had to go to school in the churches. With the green worn off we returned the fol- lowing year feeling more like true students of the high school as now there was a class below us. This year was spent rushing from one place to another, for we still could not occupy our school building The Byrd twins and Von Ray Harris began their careers as stars on the foot ball and basketball teams The officers who led us through one of our most successful years in high school our sophomore year were acl-. Byrd president il B Walker vice president Swanny Ricks secretary and Libby Seagle treasurer One really begins to familiarize himself with the inside workings of school when he becomes a yunior We realized this when we entered our tenth school year In Band on the Aimzwz etle and HYLANDhR staffs the yuniors were do ing their part We had charge of the King and ueen Contest from which both fun and pro ceeds were huge Then in the spring of 42 we gave our first great dramatic success Red Headed Stepchlld Following this the next highlight of the year was our unior Senior Banquet Sophia justice and B Walker were elected to the Marion Chapter of the National Honor Society This distinction is one of the greatest honors that can be bestowed on any high school student. The following year, after three years of hard work, we came back to take our places as digni- fied seniors and leaders of our school. Due to the war situation there were many changes in our class and faculty. But with B. Walker as president, Sara Laughlin and Swanny Ricks as vice-presidents, and Libby Seagle as secretary and treasurer we soon became adjusted to these changes. During our senior year Elaine Bowman, Swanny Ricks Bonnie Kirby Opal Tr'nks Lucille Huffman Violet Cuthbertson Helen Smarr John McCarthy Ted Mace and Wayne 'trrett were elected to the Honor Society Under the leadership of Colch Hugh Beam and his assistant Dm Hitchcock our football team made up largely of our senior boys won the All Conference Chlmpionship title Our class has added many stars to its seryice Hag during the year These stars represent Fred Harris Doyle Ayers Dumont Chapman Mar yin Loy in oe Gaddy Harold Henclley Walter Maske and lrank Fortune who have yoined the armed forces of our country Soon we will yorn the ranks of those in sery ice as we bid farewell to dear old Marion High at our commencement exercises Not all of us will haye places in the armed forces but we shall find ourselyes men md women rcady to plot a course in life which shall make America truly the llnd of the free and thc home of the brayc 4'P?',r fivfxt News .H+ Trrcarnifrrnnen 1943 Sasha 5:63 2 'fS- f-f-ss-'7i!.1., , Y 1 I y A 4 1 s . - s s . 7 Y S 7 I .
