Being fresh- men we thought everyone was looking at us and felt we could do nothing right. During the winter our school building burned and we had to go to school in the churches. With the green worn off we returned the fol- lowing year feeling more like true students of the high school as now there was a class below us. This year was spent rushing from one place to another, for we still could not occupy our school building The Byrd twins and Von Ray Harris began their careers as stars on the foot ball and basketball teams The officers who led us through one of our most successful years in high school our sophomore year were acl-. Byrd president il B Walker vice president Swanny Ricks secretary and Libby Seagle treasurer One really begins to familiarize himself with the inside workings of school when he becomes a yunior We realized this when we entered our tenth school year In Band on the Aimzwz etle and HYLANDhR staffs the yuniors were do ing their part We had charge of the King and ueen Contest from which both fun and pro ceeds were huge Then in the spring of 42 we gave our first great dramatic success Red Headed Stepchlld Following this the next highlight of the year was our unior Senior Banquet Sophia justice and B Walker were elected to the Marion Chapter of the National Honor Society This distinction is one of the greatest honors that can be bestowed on any high school student. The following year, after three years of hard work, we came back to take our places as digni- fied seniors and leaders of our school. Due to the war situation there were many changes in our class and faculty. But with B. Walker as president, Sara Laughlin and Swanny Ricks as vice-presidents, and Libby Seagle as secretary and treasurer we soon became adjusted to these changes. During our senior year Elaine Bowman, Swanny Ricks Bonnie Kirby Opal Tr'nks Lucille Huffman Violet Cuthbertson Helen Smarr John McCarthy Ted Mace and Wayne 'trrett were elected to the Honor Society Under the leadership of Colch Hugh Beam and his assistant Dm Hitchcock our football team made up largely of our senior boys won the All Conference Chlmpionship title Our class has added many stars to its seryice Hag during the year These stars represent Fred Harris Doyle Ayers Dumont Chapman Mar yin Loy in oe Gaddy Harold Henclley Walter Maske and lrank Fortune who have yoined the armed forces of our country Soon we will yorn the ranks of those in sery ice as we bid farewell to dear old Marion High at our commencement exercises Not all of us will haye places in the armed forces but we shall find ourselyes men md women rcady to plot a course in life which shall make America truly the llnd of the free and thc home of the brayc 4'P?',r fivfxt News .H+ Trrcarnifrrnnen 1943 Sasha 5:63 2 'fS- f-f-ss-'7i!.1., , Y 1 I y A 4 1 s . - s s . 7 Y S 7 I . SENIOR CLFISS PROPHECY LITTLE did I realize when I started my career as newspaper reporter for the New York Timex that it would bring me in contact with so many of my former classmates. As a hobby, I have kept all the clippings of stories pertaining to my school days, and while on my vacation, by way of diversion, I dug these from my tnrnk. Thumbing through these clippings the first thing that caught my eye was a huge picture of that glamorous movie star, Bonnie Kirby. Her latest production is Somewhere I Found You. Incidentally, our own Frances Smith played a minor role in this sensational produc- tion. Another picture that I noticed was that of Mary Jane Kluttz, famous singer at the Metro- politan Opera House There was an article on the girl Hazel Morrison who simply rooted Gene Krupa out Looking through the radio guide I noticed that sexeral of my old class mates had managed to make themselves famous Mary Leonard and her orchestra are heard nightly ox er station PUN K Every Thursday night one can pick up Tommy Gibson the famous comedian and Alvin Slim Wall and his Rhythm Boys vsho are capably taking the place of the Carter Family One article told of the outstanding work performed by ean Ray while in the WAAC s Now that the war is ox er ean is employed as stewardess on one of our ultra modern planes Libby Seagle also 1 former WA AC has settled down to school teaching In the sports section is 1 write up on ames Byrd football player for the Chicago Bears and a whole page featuring Clarence Blacks success as manager of the Boston Red Socks At the top of the society page of the Nea I me 'Inner vxhom should my eyes behold but our own attmctne Swanny Ricks? Swanny has just returned from London England where she has been gathering material for her new book Post War Etiquette Versus Pre War Etiquette amcs Banks one of Uncle Sam s pilots flew Gencrll MacArthur to a memorial service held ' ,T gga can te F -IEW mv in Arlington, Virginia. Pansy Robinson, dieti- tian from New York, recently returned from a visit with her old friend, Bonnie Owenby, sole owner of a chain of 5 8: 10c stores. A picture of joyce Church caught my eye, and upon read- ing the article, I learned that she is a missionary in India. Mildred Davis is head nurse in the General Hospital in Hickory. I had to part from my clippings long enough to answer the doorbell. It was the postman and among my mail was a letter from Louise Hens- ley, with whom I have been corresponding ever since high school days. just think! Louise is one of Charlotte's most prominent doctors. She had recently paid a visit to Marion, where she found a sur risingly large number of our old classmates filling local positions. Among the Marion High School teachers are Elaine Bowman English teacher Sara Laughlin Home Ec teacher Mary Swann Librarian and the band director none other than Harold Goodman Annie Sue Pittman Margaret Stevens and Virginia Younge are all efficient local secre taries Louise was surprised to find Bill Walker owner of one of Marion s most popular theatres the Oasis While on her visit Louise called on Pauline Rowland now married to her old high school beau William Laughrrdge Many of Marions lovellest homes are graced by a number of Marion Highs glamour girls basking content edly in domestic life Included among those so blissfully happy are Margie Smith Fannie Mae Snipes Rilla Ferguson and Virginia Emory Having finished Louise s letter I again settled myself to my clippings and read that T W McGallrard was still a lieutenant in the armed forces Opal Trmks has been giv ing lectures on Education Afton Lisenbee has twice won the Pulitzer prize for her poetry Wilma Messer is putting her ability as an artist into practice by assisting Walt Disney mth his cartoons and Sara jane Miller is hav ing a marvelous time traveling around with her wealthy husband Deep down in the bottom of my envelope of clippings my eyes caught these headlines Pam f,x WW slr r V vd, 4v X 5 7 V . Once again I was interrupted. This time it was a special delivery letter from Margaret Good, athletic director at St. Mary's. She had loads of information as to the whereabouts of our classmates. Von Ray Harris after forcing the japs from Australia, has settled down to live there on a sheep ranch. Darwin Willis still clings to his work in the navy as radio techni- cian and likes it so much that he declares he will never be a landlubber again. james Parker is a dentist in Egypt, Dottie Hensley has a championship basketball team in Cuba, jo Goins is a beauty operator in Des Moines, Iowa, Rachel Wilson is a florist in Kannapolis, N. Before I could finish my letter Ruth Smith bounced in with a magazine in her hand and a smile on her face Ruth is of course that model in New York that every one envys She tossed me the magazine with these words Look' I did and was I surpr1sed9 The cover girl was Louise Ramsey voted by the Senior class to be the best looking Ruth was simply bursting with information Shed been shop ping all day and had run into Dorothy Ship man and Etrula Akins social welfare workers in Chicago The three of them were so over joyed at seeing each other that for a while they simply stood there stunned Then they headed for the nearest drug store and chatted for half the afternoon Dorothy often sees Lois Watkins who is do ing secretarial work in Washington D C Ac cording to Lois Lucille Huffman is manager of the S 8: W Cafeteria in Charlotte N C Robert Hawkins is a pastor of The Little Church Around the Corner in New York City Violet Cuthbertson is a laboratory technician in Rio de aneiro Etrula interrupted Dot to say that she often listens to Harold Murray sports commentator she understands that Paul Lusk is the head floor walker in a 5 84 10c store in Shelby Doris Clay ton is an operator in Clayton s Beauty Shop in Atlanta, Georgia, jennings Ward is construc- tion engineer of Cannon Mills Company in Boston. C., Sudie Klontz is happily married to a successful farmer. Ruth had just received a letter from Doris Anderson who lives in High Point where she teaches social dancing. Mar- guerite Clark is married and lives in Athens, Georgiag Pete Little is one of Athen's toughest cops Annie Mae McCurry is an interior deco rator and Dan Robinson IS owner of an air plane factory After Ruth finished telling me all the news together we again rummaged through those clippings This time we found that Margaret Fleming is secretary to the Governor of North Carolina ack Byrd and oe Gaddy are still in the army Through an advertisement we learned that Marietta Burgin is owner of the Burgin Hard ware in Winston Salem and that Martha Mc Iver is proprietor of the Mclwer Dairies in Wis consin By the way Floyd Broom is her man ager We found quite a few pictures and articles of the champion tennis player Helen Smarr And ex eryvs here we looked we saw pictures of the famous musician Wayne arrett linally we finished and dialed station M H S Beliexe it or not Red Walker was playing 1 trombone solo As a hint to the wise may I suggest that collecting clippings as a hobby is an enyoyable as well as a profitable pastime ,..-X25-xi, 7 ,aa-Y ff-XY If .a laa llmfpil EE '5E'l '943 7 , - 1 I - ' 1 1 ' , . . 1 7 7 .. ,. I 1 Q .A ff S' 1' .i t ZAY L Y y TH Early Newton's E RIPPERS HHH 1942 CONFERENCE CHHmPlOUSHH in the fall of 1942, a bright future for the Marion High Rippers' was forecast when Mr. Hugh Beam, our school super- intendent took over the squad with Mr. Dan Hitchcock as his assistant. After three weeks of hard practice, the Rippers took on Red-Devils in a tight and hard-fought game. Marion scored in the second quarter, but Newton came back in the last half and tied the score 6-6. One of the toughest games of the season was with Hickory. Hickory scored in the first two minutes of the game. In the second quarter one of the opponent's kicks was blocked and covered in the end zone, giving Marion a safety-two welcome points. On the next play Fred Harris carried the hall fifty-two yards for a touchdown. Wlien the final whistle blew the Rippers led li-13. Success followed success. Next came the game of all games with the Morganton Wild Cats. Not since 1929 had we been the victors. The game proved to be one of the most exciting and dithcult games of the season. The first half was hard fought with neither team scoring. Morganton forged ahead in the third quarter with .1 beautiful pass that chalked them up six points, but Marion refused to give up. In the last quarter Fred Harris stood on the forty-yard line and hurled a pass to james Byrd who gathered it in beyond the last white stripes. 6-6? Intense silence fell as the crowd waited for the next play. Yes. it was good! The game ended with Marion leading, 7'6. Perhaps we bragged too soon. All good things must come to an end. On October 23, Marion invaded Lenoir only to be counterattacked and driven out with a score of 25-6, the only defeat of the season. Bouncing back from their defeat the previous week, the Rippers toppled the un- defeated Lincolnton eleven in a 13-12 victory. Fred Harris in the first two plays of the game sliced off tackle and ran 82 yards for a touchdown. Lincolnton came back in the last half fighting like a dying animal, but Marion had them behind the eight hall. On November 6, the Rippers using all the strength they possessed, out-classed the stubborn Canton team. Fred Harris ran sixty yards for a touchdown. Marion won -M-ll. The fast-moving Rippers were headed straight toward the Conference Championship. On November 26, in Forest City the Rippers had to live up to their name by slashing and ripping their way into the Forest City line. We had all to gain or all to lose. Forest City proved to be more than we had bargained for. The last and most exciting score of the game came when jim Bryson lateraled to Fred Harris who sprinted over. The game ended 27-6, Marion's favor. Three boys on the team have an unusual and praiseworthy recordfVon Ray Harris, J. B. Wtilker. and Ned Noblitt played every minute of every game. 3235353 g, .. ...M ., MM . .A--qlfvl. 3-4. - at '!?'Yi 1 K 4 1!Sf:?1 , fi i..:,, L. v .431 . fig.-QI xii'-' :g:,4fQ LA., I , Msgs? it 1 fv':fW7,1Q,, V .agar V, viii . . , A.-W . .
