Life flashes much too quickly before our eyes. And you just pray you could slow the whole process down. At least shoot some scenes for a second time. Before you know, the long arduous hours of practice have materialized into a polished performance, the Senior Play. The gay, lively sound effects form the cast party to the Junior - Senior prom, fade into the nothingness of happy memories. And the trip to Washington, for a bit of location acting, ends All too soon with tired bodies, but temperaments whetted to the city lifi With many future plans for careers here are brought a step closer. Finally the event we have been Dreading Waiting for Trying to put off Hoping it would hurry and get here Then coming and going As a once in a lifetime event. The true premieres of our adulthood With all this being a part of The Last Picture Show . The blockheads lizards, microbes, and embryologists. 62 “VANISHING POINT” The end must come As it always does. The Junior year also must end. In defeat and desolation for some. In jubilant victory for others. So as we plod along, life rolls quickly by. Candy sales come and are finally phased out as phrases like, Money or candy in by Monday or else echo from crazed homeroom teachers Who would rather strangle Betty Benson than eat. College Career night comes. We are grown up. Scary, frightening but often advantageous to be older. Our whole future is planned in our mind ' s eye. Decisions are made on our choice of University, Maybe a trade school or a junior college. We live, and eventually learn as the clocks of school tick classes into eternity. The Junior Play. Hours of work, mistakes are made, lines float in limbo in people ' s heads And players ' bodies revolt from exhaustion The applause only to give a single moment of ecstasy Now lies silent on the ears of Father Time. We still watch the second hands keeping busy as The Beta Club beacons us to join its ranks, and we concede as Beta Beggars, hoping to be looked upon mercifully. Rings come. Symbols of achievement. Beacons urging us on saying we can make it... It arrives...the finale...the END... We reflect, but mostly our gaze turns toward next September, when our life as a non-senior reaches The end of the line, its getting off place, its Vanishing Point. Football Their game attendance might be shocking, their plays not too fancy or so well executed as the varsity, and their playing on a smaller scale in general. But a common train of thought flows through all of their minds, to win one for the Big Red! And that is what they do, along with a lot of hard work, even harder playing, and of course some fun. So who cares if a little razzle-dazzle is lacking. They more than make up for it in sheer determination. Front Row: David Harrington, Greg Goodman, Mike Blevins, Robert Noonan, Mike Rivette, Phillip Goodman, Glen Robinson, George Walker, David Olinger, Steve Weisbord. Second Row: Robbie Frye, Dale Tiller, Keith Dunnagun, Bart Estep, Larry Hopkins, Eddie Hart, Jimmy Lite, David Vicars, Mike Romans, Ernie Brown. I could have sworn that play would have worked. 140 Cross Country Track The delicate crunching sound of leaves underfoot, the smell of black earth, and the sight of shining dew on the patchwork of autumn leaves still clinging desperately to the trees. These are all part of a cross-country man ' s world, whether at a meet, or on a practice run in the early morning hours on some lonely path. All the members of this team go for perfection, whether it is a new record in competition, a longer distance each day in their workouts, or to put the finishing touches on their running style that gave them the great record they had this year. Bottom: Steve McGhee, Cleve Smith, Carson Holbrook, Lewis Foreman, Greg Lawrence, Mike Bauman. Sitting: Randy Tiller, Marty Stewart. Top: Herbert Clay, Ken Bauman, George Whitley, Scott Wright, Bobby Runyon. WELCOME l TO HURRICANE house Varsity Basketball Big Red Roundballers win again and all of the time spent for four years is definitely worth it! Almost going to State is certainly a grand honor. In the finals of the Regional Tournament, Marion fightingly goes against Radford and the Sparks ' ratings declare Marion sixth in the state, after losing the finals. All of the team are extremely proud of their achievements, as they should be. Kneeling: Alan Linkous, Coach Charlie Harkins, Coach M ike Smyth, Bradley Moore. Six Super Senior-Starters. 142 143 Girls’ Varsity Basketball For four long, excruciatingly painful, tiring, death valley years, the girls worked for the Varsity team and the Senior year. Always pushing and squeezing for more from the members are Coach Duncan and Manager Madonna Echols. They deserve all the credit they can get. First Row: Teri Harvey, Jo Burkett, Debbie Snider. Second Row: Ellen Farrington, Diane Hayes, Cathy Reith, Rhonda McGlothlin, Pam Weisbrod. Third Row: Phyllis Hall, Alisa Mercer, Sus an Thompson, Debbie Hayes, Pam DeBord, Katherine Foreman. Girls ' Varsity Basketball team. One of their main goals is winning, but there lurks in the back of their minds, the idea that someday they will become a Girls ' Varsity Basketball team member. First Row: Carolyn Goodman, Dorothy Williams, Sally Mauck, Laura McCarty Groseclose, Sharon Albert, Lisa Hawks, Pam Kendle. f Culbert, PamSnider, Vicki Worto n, Julie Parks, Don na E wald. Third Row: Lynda Hall, Susan , Lynn Thompson, Coach Jeannie Duncan, Cindy Gill, Lonna Yates, Beth Bauman, Dorothy Weaver, Pam Kendle leads the fast break. Mrs. Duncan talks it over. JV Basketball Junior Varsity Basketball does not always receive its due credit. Bearing the desire to win manages to keep the sport and enthusiasm burning. They have the bounding determination it takes to be a true congratulated competitor. Edgar Johnson, Larry Jennings, Keith Dunngan, Dale Tiller, Larry Abel, Bill Goetzinger, Danny Slemp, Dennis Farris, Carson Holbrook, Eddy Medley, Ricky Daugherty, Tom Wilson, Lewis Foreman, Greg Goodman, Coach Larry Sawyers. Freshman Basketball Young? Yes, in a sense they are. Inexperienced? Sure, they are new faces in the sports scene. Struggling, for some recognition of their talent. Play after play, basket after basket, they gain poise, form and, yes, that all valuable court time. So with every shot they make, and every dribble of the ball on the hardwood floor, they come closer to realizing their dream of the big time, of the Varsity Squad. fcWIC . Kneeling: Mike Johnston, Gary Abel, Mike Williams, Glenn Robinson, Dave Whitescarver, Steve Knipp. Standing: Kenny Jarvis, Mike Bullins, Garland Cline, Barry Robinson, Robert Guy, Guyn Combs, Coach Ron Ball. Back: Coach Brockman, David Smith, Marty Stewart, Dwight Hester, Ulysses Cox, Buddy Farris, Bobby Hunter, Ken Bauman, Herbert Clay, Mike Ba uman. David, Bobby, and Gary practice for the meets. Chasing through the halls of our school, dashing madly around corners and up stairs, while winter blows around outside. Is it madness? No, not at all, it is only the indoor track team, as they temporarily turn our corridors into practice areas and defy the elements to get at them. Their success in this is witnessed by the fantastic record they racked up this season, and by their all out effort to win by traveling to Blacksburg and Lexington on weeknights to take on the competitors. Smith finishes. Runyon ready to leave. Hunter lands in the sand pitl Cracking in the home runs! Baseballers leave the other teams behind and bat their ways out of paper bags and anything else that looks like a baseball diamond. Girls on the track team exhort every ounce of their effort through to the end. The lucky part is - they have fun while they ' re doing it. First Row: Diane Hayes, Dorothy Weaver , Beth Bauman, Donna Ewald, Helen Anderson. Second Row: Pam Kendle, Phyllis Hall, Debbie Snider, Susan Perdue, Susan Ratcliff, Mimi Graham, Rhonda McGlothlin. Third Row: Carolyn Williams, Lyn Thompson, Mary Lowe, Jane Bass, Pam Snider. Up, Up, and Away. Look out! Here I come! Wrestling Muscles bulge, sinews stretch to their utmost limits, and bones seem to bend at the great amount of pressure put in them, as the four seconds tick away and a pin is called. This is wrestling, and this is the goal of every member of the squad in our school, the ultimate victory, so to speak. To achieve this, however, these people must go through 98 degree workouts, after losing 5 pounds in an afternoon, starve themselves, and in short, give their minds and bodies to this most grueling of activities. i2 Outdoor Track Front Row: Steve Copeland, Phillip Goodman, Larry Jennings, Edgar Johnson, Randy Tiller, Bobby Runyon, Alan Blevins, Mike Williams. Second Row: Pat Jackson, Mark Atwell, Dale Tiller, Lewis Foreman, Joe Ferraro, Robert Noonan, Rob P orter. Back Row: Coach Ball, Kim Harvey, Bobby Hunter, Kyle Rhodes, Dwight Hester, Gregg Steele, Scott Morrell, Robbie Fry, Mark Alexander, Coach Brockman. . They can leap tall buildings in a single bound 1 Shot put, pole vault, long jump, and of course long hours of leg power are all part of the outdoor track scene. These boys brave rain, mud, and often snow in their early season practice. Practice that drags on forever as they beat themselves into shape mentally and physically for their many tough adversaries. So with the Scarlet colors flying brilliantly on their backs, they lay the other team down in grand style. 1 53 Golf Who putt this golf ball in the sand? That is just one of the woes facing the MSHS Golf Team. Their raw edges want smoothing, but then, practice makes perfect. Kneeling: Coach Larry Sawyers and Coach Charlie. Harkins. Back: Billy Buchanan, Arthur Davis, Gregg Farrell, Tracy Untiedt, Barry Bennett, Carson Holbrook, Steve Forrest. Where did the ball go? Fore! Let ' s see... This is going to be a tough one! Just a little bit further! Scarlettes If you ' ve ever been to a Marion basketball game, you might have noticed a group of pretty girls clad in red and white uniforms, who perform at half-time. These girls are known as the Scarlettes. This group of young, energetic girls practice about as hard as any other team in school. Their practice season lasts from June until April - eleven months!! During the summer months, the new group of Scarlettes get organized and go to Drill Team Camp at Ball State University in Indiana. After returning home they practice all their newly learned routinues and prepare for the oncoming school year. This year the Scarlettes performed in the Homecoming Parade, Homecoming game at half-time, and the Christmas parade, not to mention the home basketball games. Also, they were invited to perform at the district game at John Battle and they performed at Virginia Tech for the Region IV AA Tournament. MSHS is proud of these girls in red and white and thinks they have done a great job! Front: Cindy Hudson, Jamie Beamer, Kim Jensen, Anne Lambert, Mary Pat Henry, Linda Clawson, Debbie Mercer. Standing: Susan Bush, Joni Meek, Dana Swartz, Cheryl Warren, Ellen Graybeal, Debbie Cox, Cheryl Kirk. Varsity Cheerleaders We got the fever, we’re hot, we can’t be stopped! Are these the sounds of mad gladiators with the flu? No, it ' s our very own Varsity Cheerleaders, creators of pep, noise, and cupcakes. These ten girls are the ever-faithful backers of the Big Red Machine. Without a doubt, the cheerleaders are the busiest members of M.S.H.S., selling jerseys, smashing cars, and having soc hops. These pep pushers attended camp at U.T. where they earned every honor in sight including the spirit stick! Without the cheerleaders, M.S.H.S. would certainly be a dull place. Left to right: Susan Thompson, Teri Harvey, Debbie Snider, Cheryl Sale, Cathy Reith, Susan Tate, Anita Blevins, Cathy Umbarger, Katherine Foreman, Pam Pennington. Making friends with the competition. Showing some of our best. Debbie doing her job. Cheering during a tense moment. J. V. Cheerleaders Dancing cheerleaders?? Of course. This year the J.V. Cheerleaders not only stimulate the Big Red Spirit, but grace the pep rallies with vivacious dance routines. Just as their Varsity counterparts, these Hurricane gals attend a long and vigorous week of camp. They return full of pep, new chants and cheers, and ready to make hundreds of cupcakes. A losing first half, a breathtaking tie, a jubilant one-point win ... Those J.V. Boosters are always there!! Front: Cindy Sharp, Kathy Jones. Middle: Lyn Thompson, Susan Ratcliffe, Shelly Sharp. Back: Sharon Albert, Karen Willis, Donna Murphy. A victory smile! J.V. Cheerleacers know what it ' s ail about — they show it here in the homecoming parade. J.V. beauties cheering on.
