. HURRICANE 72 Marion Senior High School Marion, Virginia Vol. 37 i 2 Ltc§IlM Extras 99 Hustle 135 Hurricane People ( all, caring. Hurricane People, alive and vivacious, shouldering responsibilities, shirking duties, pitching in, and copping out. Mixed -n- matched. Mutt and Jeff, Jack and Jill. Climbing, but more than a hill, pft Scaling the mountain of success. Maybe slipping occasionally, but never turning back, for quitting was not an ingredient of a Hurricane. Though we had our faults, we were so thoroughly stirred, kneaded, and baked S at just the right temperature, that we separated from the sides and rose victoriously as individuals ... The smoking pit serves as a center of intellectual conversation in which war and peace are of major interest. Senior study halls provide a vent for secret confidences and a stage for the current dramas of daily life. Steve Albert wishes Martha Pedigo, the baby of the Senior class, Happy Birthday! The directors of the Junior play take a break from rehearsal to 6 Singing the Alma Mater at the Variety show, somehow brings the Seniors closer to each other. chat about the progress of the play. A smile, a pat on the back, and a cheery greeting supplied a portion of the ingredients for friendliness. For many, a mere Hi! What ' s happening? rescued us from the depths of gloom and lifted us to the heights of glee, it would have been so easy for one to think only of himself and forget that other people do exist, but as a MSHS student, it was impossible to do. We were continually entangling all into our web of sunshine and amity. Wingfield still counts the candles openly. Rallying behind the team cements old friendship and serves as the foundation for new acquaintances. I T. Devilment and Rowdiness Wait! Let ' s talk it over. Heads, I win. Tails, you lose. That ' s another foul on you, you, you... No one, but no one, beats me! Give ' em - WHAT, - Red?? GILL 8 Yes, there was more to good ole MSHS than just work, work, work. These Hurricane People seemed to pop out of nowhere and added hilarity which lifted the strain of the daily routine. No matter if these students were inside the halls, outside in the snow, participating in sports, or showing school spirit, they somehow managed, in their own special way, to make someone laugh and to bring joy to the world of Marion Senior High School. The Bleacher Bums express their true feelings Ready.... Aim... I Cup Co-operation ...And then came Rufus, created with tender loving care. Fingerpainting art students revert to their childhood. Judy Floover and Sue Keyes collaborate on salad construction. Kenny Edwards: chief overseer of Dicky Millard ' s progress. Rising to the occasion, Industrial Arts Club hammers away. 10 Teamwork, teamwork, that ' s what counts! This was the belief expressed by the students at MSHS. There was also the belief that we could work things out - together; so through collaboration and mutual helpfulness, our school year was marked a success. Granted, there were flaws in the plan but they were quickly smoothed over (even the ruffled feathers of the underclassmen). Thus, like the Pushmy-Pullyu in the Doctor Doolittle stories, we had to work together in order to accomplish our purpose. A stitch in time saves...how many? Well, you see, I need ten sources...by this afternoon. Now.One more time. Roger Pennington, official mailman for MSHS. 11 4 T. Apathy and Vandalism The Annual Staff has been aware of a deadly virus spreading throughout the halls of MSHS causing destruction and vandalism along its path. Our Hodge-Flash caught these actual scenes where the bug has attacked our students and caused this wreckage. Thanks to some concerned students who have taken action to annihilate this germ, vandalism has become less around our halls. During I Care week students drew posters, wrote poems, and performed skits trying to make others aware of this deadly virus. Tommy Toilet alias Sydma Hatzopolous, demonstrates her extra talents in the I Care Assembly. 12 We ' re just trying to get our money ' s worth! If you don ' t need it, throw it in our lavatories. Just one piece of paper won ' t hurt, will it? ] A typical bulletin board. Lately, this is even a more typical bulletin board. Rodney Redneck said Whoo-Pee that was fun! Need we say more??? But the sign says No Smoking , Jeannie! I C. Innocence and I Cup Wisdom Not many people believe Ole R ick ' s yarns. Mr. Williams, you don ' t really think that I ' d do that! Who is the wise guy that left this mess? Alan Brown wonders, What ' s it all about?” From the innocence of the Freshmen to the wisdom of the Seniors, — there were varying degress of activity. Freshmen came to the school excited and unaware of the dangers lurking in the halls. The wise Seniors knew and planned to let the naivetes in on the secret to success. Graduation displayed the erudition and sagacity obtained through four years of hard work. At least the Freshmen now have a goal in sight. Ain ' t no way - just ain ' t no way! 14 Kim Coe lights his fire...of knowledge. And after you have finished ...bring me another... No, you may not be excused! So this is how you become top in the Senior Class. Kwiz team goes to Roanoke -and comes right back. Coach, that big bully hit me-right in the mouth!” 15 I C. Thoughtfulness and Sincerity Ball ' s Bouncing Babes butter Ball with a better batter baked cake. This makes my 64th ankle today. The Hurricane people laughed, cried, studied, and played together in sincere friendship and love. Together, they sought and found the deep meanings of life as kindness and friendship penetrated the halls of Marion Senior High School. The students, teachers, and the principal worked in consider¬ ation of each other. If you hadn ' t knocked them down in the first place, you wouldn ' t have to help now. Standing as we sing. Hymn no. 71. ' Well, I used a mouthwash...” Another dull day of school. All through the year MSHS students enjoyed attaining goals as well as suffering mounting disappointments. Our teams had many victories yet encountered losses, but it was rewarding through the good sportsmanship portrayed throughout. Some failed as others passed, and some cried while others laughed. Aw, come on everybody!! I Cup Disappointment But I watered it ... maybe my green thumb turned orange. 17 Happiness is ... Winning! 18 Receiving top awards for F.H.A. and Marionette surely gives one something to smile about. But I ' m scared to talk in front of big crowds, says Sherree Rogers, Speaker of the House for MGA. Do you mean that we are leaving the school to these S.C.A. officers for 1972-73? A is for accomplishment!! V-l-C-T-O-R-Y!! For the students at MSHS, this word was very well-known. In sports, our Hurricane People rallied victory after victory. From football to basketball, wrestling, track, golf and baseball, our people had pride and the everlasting strength and courage to win. Even when the going got tough, our teams never gave up. In scholastic achievement, victory was well known to the people who worked and strived for their goal. Victory for Marion Senior High School was overpowering defeat by a mile. 19 4 Cups Enthusiasm and Vigor There isn ' t much to be said about our enthusiasm and vigor because the pictures tell it like it is. Every student has participated in some type of enthusiasm this year, whether it be in a pep rally or a ballgame. The cheerleaders, the Bleacher Bums, the student body, the fans, and even the players were major factors in producing vigor and pep that carried us to victories and rescued us from defeats. Connie Snavely kicks the habit. Foll v the Yellow Brick Road to Success. Sam and Ella Turtle perform their side-show routine. Eat Who up? Clap your hands and move your feet! 20 Marion supporters come in all shapes and sizes. Thank goodness for my Secret! Hurricane Happy House! 21 2 Cups Versatility Inside and out, we find that MSHS is covered with the unique talents of individuals. As you see, we aren ' t lacking in versatility. On stage, in class, and at the ' ' alley”, we have discovered that our students have a wide variety of talents which are usually hidden behind stacks of books and homework papers. “Now I told you sweetie, don ' t call me at school!” Youth Government Day - mass confusion! “And now, for my next number... i i 4il Howdy, son! You here to pick up Lily belle? This party is going to be murder. 22 Mad-Dog Schwartz, guilty or not guilty ? Believe me, this is the way to Carnegie Hall. Easy Lovin ' Strike one! Whoops! Wrong game! Gertrude, I thought you ' d never ask. 23 2 Cups Talent One, two, three, four ... one, two, three - Are you sure the Jolly Green Giant started out this way? Everybody count to ten and say limburger cheese! The butler didn ' t do it this time! King Arthearp gives Sir Scarlet instructions on defeating the Blue Knight. I “All the world ' s a stage, and all the men and women merely players... . To this famous quote from As You Like It by William Shakespeare, the students of Marion Senior High School added a new dimension. No longer did we feel that we must exhibit our abilities on a conventional stage, for daily life was the stage on which we presented perpetual performances. The Pep Band: a bunch of desirable blow-hards. 25 I Cup Originality The drama class in serious rehearsal. Hippie Dave, where are your contacts? 26 “And I thought I got enough of this at home! The long and the short of it His barber went out of business. Yes, drama does have devastating effects on people. From the Mardi Gras to the fashion scene, from hair styles to drama — these were only a few of the many ways that Hurricane people were expressing themselves. The personality of each and every student was reflected and revealed in a multitude of interesting ways. Each unique person illustrated his individuality in some distinct manner which added a new dimension to the life at Marion Senior High School. 27 I Cup Privileges Mr. Moody measures Aleta Catron for her status symbol, a 1973 Senior ring. Oh beautiful, for spacious skies... Ahhh, the liberties of senior study (??) halls. Football players are entitled to front row seats during fall pep rallies, and their size prevents arguments. Hard at work in the SCA room. 28 Seniors first, a concert by Black Oak Arkansas, unsupervised senior study halls, and the privelege of living in a democratic society made us realize that freedom must be earned. Hard work, countless tears, and painstaking toil were necessary to sow the seeds of liberty, but co-operation, alliance, and trust were even more important to the continuation of these freedoms. Though we complained of the restrictions imposed upon us, deep inside we knew that we were truly lucky. In the Sophomore assembly, Judge Hoge presents Mike Phares with a license to operate his wheels. As the first Senior class to receive their rings during the Junior year, Barbara Parks purchases her beauty with immense pride. At a table of their own, teachers discuss the trials and tribulations of their profession. ' Assembly is dismissed. Seniors first! ' 29 3 T. Discipline Girls, are you gonna sit there or play ball? Happiness is...having Mrs. Werth catch you when you layout of class. Patty Bear and Bill Rector probe into 17th century literature with all the gusto they can muster. How much have YOU had, Mr. Henry? 30 Senior boys harass a naughty freshman. Hello ... Mr. Veselik? I said I ' d do anything for track ... but not my hair! Mrs. Bishop finds a place to dust her eraser. Through strong efforts and discipline, students learned and gave to their highest capacity. Order was maintained by teachers, coaches, and other staff members. Freshmen received the unfortunate end of the bargain with the disciplinary actions handed out by upperclassmen. Everyone knew who was boss and few crossed the line. Raw hard work proved to be the principle on which the Seniors based their success and the underclassmen hoped to learn from the elders”. Ah, you did it, now you ' re gonna get it! 3 Cups Hilarity But this is the latest style... Mrs. Pugh is allergic to butter, but only on her birthday. Juniors jivin ' to the beat! Ahhh ... my little chickadee... Is this our faculty? It couldn ' t be ... could it? i - v 19J ► 9 gSfn 11 5 . 5 _ 32 The Bulldogs came over the mountain-yuk. Ho! Ho! Ho! Very funny VERY embarassing. Students take revenge on captured Mr. DeBord. All for Marion, stand up and holler! While proceeding diligently through what could have been another hum-drum year at M.S.H.S., the Hurricane people took time out from their study to chase away the blues. They made fun out of the dull workdays by obeying the upperclassmen and by joining one of the many clubs. From dressing like women to representing the barnyard, the students enjoyed priceless moments of hilarity. 33 3 Cups Festivity Gaiety was foremost in many of the 1971-72 school activities. From the sock hops to the Prom, MSHS students enjoyed the various entertainments amid an atmosphere of fellowship. The Spirit of 71 was an ideal theme for the Homecoming activities. Whether it was the Variety show, the parade, the football game, or the dances, our Hurricane people pulled through with all-out support. An air of elegance combined with nervous stomachs provided an appropriate scene for our MSHS Beauty Pageant. Each girl, armed with the security of an Alka-Seltzer waiting behind stage, sailed across the floor to the music I Feel Pretty. Tensions were calmed and hands clapped as Debbie Medley was crowned Miss MSHS . From graceful silhouettes we moved right along to exciting frenzy of the Christmas Dance. Feet shuffled and bodies swayed as couples glided down Mistletoe Lane. As the spirit of Christmas permeated throughout the cafeteria and couples were seen whispering sweet nothings under the mistletoe, we knew the dance had been successful. These thorns are killing me. Homecoming Court: Debbie Romans, Nancy Parsons, Debbie Colley, Jill Hinton, Vicki Paddock. Jive on! Queen and Court: Cheryl Sale, Rosemary Bass, Debbie Medley, Katherine Greer, Lynn Thompson. John Bauman and Betty Hunter reign as King and Queen. Behind the scene activities. 35 Valentines Dance Court: Alan Widner, Teresa Blevins, Lynn Cornett, Gary Romans, Gayle Ross, Becky Wyatt, Melinda Irving, Jesse Choate, Anita Ross, Butch Glass. In concert. Welcome aboard, honored Seniors!! Be young ...” ...be foolish ... Queen of Hearts” provided the setting for the Valentine ' s Dance, as Cupid ' s darts were aimed at all the couples. Intermission was highlighted with the crowning of the queen, Becky Wyatt. Black Oak Arkansas presented MSHS with the first rock concert in our school ' s history. The wild frenzy of the performers brought forth from the audience screams of enjoyment. Once again the Hurricane People towered in their efforts of making the concert a complete success. Topping off a year of festivity was the annual Jr.-Sr. Prom. Be Young, Be Foolish, but Be Happy rang in the hearts of all present. The Juniors had successfully created the best prom ever. This was made evident by the tears of happiness which streamed down the joyful faces of those dancing to the theme song. ... but be Happy! 37 4 Cups Pride Success Story No. 21! But Dad, I ' m doing my best! I pledge allegiance... We ' re behind you, we ' re backing you up! National Black Week is observed by Jane Russell, Deborah Hayes, Karen Yette, and Debbie Lee. 38 “You can do it, you can do it, you can! Round bailers display solemnity as the team continues winning. Pride was Coach Ball ' s favorite speech topic to encourage our football team. The Bleacher Bums organized school spirit and brought it to a high peak for our basketball team and for pep rallies. The black students emphasized National Black Week with a bulletin board - for heritage. Coach Ball, the Bleacher Bums, black students, music and other activities - that was for pride in our school. Blow on, Gordon Bass ... Toot, toot, toot! Freshmen finally win a pep rally ... the judges sold out!! 39 I Qt. Reality After twelve years as a unit, the Seniors became acutely aware of their need for individuality outside the walls of M.S.H.S. The Rotary Guidance Program awakened many to the world of business careers. College Career Night offered answers to Juniors and Seniors as they made plans for furthering their education. The arrival of these status symbols and the superiority of the Seniors was impounded upon the underclassmen ' s minds. Once students realize that school is not all play, the power of the library is at the constant service of anyone who knows how to use it. The daily hassle of going to and from classes bring us a notch closer to summer vacation. Phil Davis and Rodney Jones faithfully go to the draft board office as they are forced to think of the future as the not so far away. A generation of ecology minded people, we know one small piece of trash can mar the beauty of nature. Fuller endeavor and our heritage. Mr. Williams, Robert Parsons and Gary to make M.S.H.S. students proud of our flag Realizing 1971-1972 would be a special year, the students threw themselves into various activities. The Bleacher Bums yelled vigorously and they soon became a star attraction at basketball games. Closeted in deep sessions, the SCA accomplished some astounding feats, much to the amazement of the student body. Whether meeting with the students or the faculty, Mr. Williams reiterated his philosophy that students come first. Genuine concern echoed the problems that cursed some areas at MSHS and together, the students labored to ward off any such future enigmas. Profiting from these experiences, students and faculty alike accomplished the products for a successful year. 41 Industry visitation for the Seniors provided valuable insight to the world of wage earners. Measuring for his gown, Cecil Johnson wonders if he is going to be able to last out those few endless months before graduation. Our new S.C.A. officers for the ' 71 - ' 72 school year don ' t seem to happy at the thought of first day in school and first day out of the pool. The Senior girls question whether they can keep the tassel on their cap from flopping in their face. 42 Youth Government Day Adults remained on the sidelines as the Senior government students took over the reins of the town for a day with an air of efficiency and progress. To achieve their common goal, the youth worked together and realized that government is not all books - it is an actuality. Instead of merely reading about town management, they involved themselves readily in their important jobs. Adding this experience to their four years of high school, the Seniors became perspective town and national citizens. 44 Senior Class Officers: Tommy Weaver, President; Joyce Shields, Treasurer; Debby Tilson, Historian; Mrs. Echols, Sponsor; Rick Richardson, Vice-President; Missing - Jan Wagoner, Reporter; Kay Robinson, Secretary. FACES OF 72 When August 26 finally dawned and we listened to opening day speeches for the last time, the class of ' 72 felt a sense of togetherness that grew and was strengthened throughout the year. This sense of our being a unit, of each of us being part of a larger whole, carried us through many escapades and projects. We campaigned to get an astounding 85% to go on our Senior trip, and then worked feverishly on projects and sales. When the appointed days finally came and we toured the nation ' s capitol, our minds and hearts were flooded with memories that will last for many years. After weeks of grueling practice A Family Portrait, the class play, was presented successfully. Each of us has special memories of successful sports seasons and our final Homecoming at MSHS. This year was our time to be honored with a prom, and we spent a lovely night dancing. Together we have arrived at a new beginning and as we look forward into all the tomorrows of our lives, it will be with hearts full of friends and friendships that were begun at MSHS and that will last forever. A play of religious and Biblical heritage, it displayed realism with the more updated contemporary language used. Under the direction of Mrs. Werth and Mrs. Pugh, the cast presented the troubled days before Jesus ' crucifixion and the Passover season. It also gave meaning to our lives with the presentation of the idea that it takes a lot of understanding. FACES O F 73 During the 1971 1972 school year we Juniors threw ourselves enthusiastically into numerous activities and projects. Selling candy, readying the class play for its one-night stand, ordering rings, and preparing for the Junior-Senior Prom were undertaken by our spirited class. We also participated in every phase of school life from forensic meets and athletic teams to SCA meetings and Bleacher Bums. The experience and maturity gained through our activities this year will aid us as we enter our final year at MSHS and become the true leaders of the school. FACES OF 74 On August 26, 1971, the class of ' 74 found a year of new experiences and ideas awaiting us. We felt the urge to distinguish ourselves as being more mature than we were as Freshmen. Through our active roles in school government and extra-curricular activities, we have added our portion to the enthusiasm of MSHS. We helped raise the school spirit by winning numerous pep rallies which, before the class of ' 74, was taboo for Sophomores. Participation in Sophomore class assemblies, the Rotary Guidance Program, and an assembly for the entire student body rounded out our active year. FACES OF 75 Last September 330 active, bright eyed Freshmen descended upon MSHS with great enthusiasm. The mighty Seniors showed their hospitality by a pat on the heads with their rings, and the echoes resounding through the halls sounded like Bongo drums. We Freshmen were somewhat resentful at having to take the back seats in assembly, allowing seniors to cut in ahead of us in the lunch line, and to be the last to leave assembly. We are now feeling much better since we will soon enter the Sophomore rank. The girls have served as guides for special occasions College Career night, Parent Visitation, and the Rotary Guidance program. The boys are active in sports. Our loyal support of all school activities demonstrates that the Freshmen are a strong spoke in the mighty wheel that keeps MSHS moving. The handbook was designed to give the Freshmen and other new students a deeper understanding of our school and its regulations. Constituents of this committee were Anne Lambert, Jo Burkett, and Mimi Graham. Through long meetings with much discussion the S.C.A. served as a medium between students and faculty. The students were able to relate problems within the school, many of which were solved. All members of the S.C.A. strived to make MSHS an outstanding school, pointing with pride to the accomplishments of the various committees. Left to right: Audrey Patrick, Secretary; Cheryl Sale, Treasurer; Debbie Romans, Reporter; John Bauman, President; Mr. Winters, Mrs. Winters, Sponsors; Kim Harvey, Vice-President. Debbie Romans put out an assiduous effort in making the public aware of the events occuring at MSHS. During homecoming activities she was assisted in making posters by Johnny Rector, Fielder Sanders, Jackie White, Mike Romans, Sarah Sparger, Jan Wagoner, Dave Paddock, and Rosemary Bass. The movie Sweet November was presented to the student body on March 9, 1972, by the Charity Drive which was headed by Betty Hunter. The purpose of this project was to raise money to be donated to charitable organizations in Smyth County as determined by the SCA Council. 101 Once each month, homeroom teachers and SCA representatives nominated one boy and one girl to compete for Citizens of the Month for that month. Chairman Sandra Trail compiled the nominations into one list and from this list the members of the SCA council voted, with the award going to the top boy and girl. The students at MSHS were entertained at sock hops by a variety of bands ranging from soul to hard rock. The arrangements for obtaining these distant bands were made by Dicky Millard and Bobby Tate. The year 1971-72 was a year of many changes and with these changes the constitution was up-dated by Gary Slemp, Sue Matthews, Davey Smith, Sherree Rogers, and Charlie Gill to meet the needs of today ' s student. The rooms of the new wing were given pride this year when the Patriotism Committee placed U.S. flags in them. On behalf of the school Robert Parsons and Gary Fuller, co-chairmen of the Patriotism Committee, proudly accepted from theV.F.W. Post in Marion a U.S. flag and a state flag which had flown over the U.S. capitol and state capitol. The flags were raised daily in front of our school to reflect MSHS ' s pride in her country. As a result of the Charity Drive, Betty Hunter donates checks to Marion Jaycees Retardation Center and the American Cancer Society. 102 The halls of MSHS took on new color as the Bulletin Board Committee, made up of Becky Brown and Teresa Hudson, showed different phases of student life with creative board displays. The memories of our school year were compiled into a scrapbook by Ginny Cornick and Katherine Foreman so that in years to come anyone can look back and see that 197172 was truly a great year. The SCA and the Beta Club joined in honoring top students in each subject by presenting them with awards in the Scholastic Awards Assembly. Chairman Jackie White was assisted in giving the competitive tests by Pam Pennington. Although unable to have a foreign exchange student for the year 1971-72, Patty Bear waged a campaign to arouse community interest in sponsoring a student for the oncoming school years. The Marionette award for the most MSHS recognition, is given to Mr. Winters, SCA sponsor and VEA President. 103 Hurricane Citizens Each month one boy and one girl were voted by the SCA Council to be Citizens of the Month for that month. Nominations for these awards, which were submitted by homeroom teachers and their SCA representatives, were based on honesty, respect for teachers and fellow students, and participation in school activities. At the end of the school year, the names of the citizens from each month were com¬ piled into one list. From the list the SCA council selected the one boy and girl to receive the honor of being chosen the Citizens of the Year. With the opening of football season, Sheila Murray and Lloyd Anderson were intercepted for the Citizens of the Month for September. The Citizens of the Month for October, Vicky Paddock and Charlie Gill, played their parts for Holloween. With this much Christmas spirit, it ' s no wonder Jack McCarty and Debbie Romans were Citizens of the Month for December. Surely Betty Hunter and John Bauman didn ' t get selected Citizens of the Month for November by chasing a poor little ole turkey. Even the good citizens of January, Gwyn Thompson and Sandy Trail, can join in on the fun of a New Year ' s Eve party. 104 With hearts as big as theirs, how could Teri Harvey and Johnny Linkous help but be selected Citizens of the Month for February. Rain sure doesn ' t dampen the spirits of Katherine Foreman and Kim Harvey who were chosen Citizens of the Month for April. Wonder if Benjamin Franklin was ever chosen to be a Citizen of the Month for March-’ Joey Murphy and Anita Blevins were at MSHS. Like they say April showers bring May flowers. Cindy Fenyk and Dicky Millard were Citizens of the Month for May. Because they cared and were involved throughout the school year, John Bauman and Betty Hunter were selected Citizens of the Year for 1971-72. 105 Girls Extend Christian Character Front row: Mrs. Courtney, Sponsor; Sarah Sparger, Tres.; Debbie Evans, Song-leader; Betty Hash, Reporter; Charlene Elledge, Hist.; Betty Hunter, Pres.; Sherree Rogers, V. of disappointment. As the school year closed, shining goals came in sight. There were tremulous and overflowing emotions. Regret or relief. Seniors or Freshmen, each had a new day to face and, as individual challenges arose, individual Hurricane People met with them with typical stamina and courage. But it was not individuals working for a gap, for whatever they did, the Hurricane People united and worked together. Though some of the people were severed from the final product, there were fond crumbs of memory left in the hearts of the Hurricane People. jjy „ mmmgm
