I 4 I hurricane ' 71 Administration JrsW. fa x: 3ES Advertisements Sports Classes Organizations Editor-In-Chief . Business Manager Beth Buchanan . . . Gary Price We believe in the beauty of a pure world untouched by man ' s carelessness. We believe that despite all fears, man survives. We believe that in every night a light of hope shines. We believe that in a storm a smile breaks through. We believe that friendship means loyalty, trust, caring, and sharing. We believe in the brotherhood that binds all races and nations. We believe in freedom for all men in bondage, whether mental or physical. We believe that each soul needs a tranquil force in order to survive. We believe in peace, an eternal bond, to bridge all gaps. We believe that every man is obligated to feel compassion for his neighbor. We believe in the right of nonconformity for each generation. But most of all we believe in one another. o Ill (‘oiii enialitv . . . Happy Birthday to Me School is more than just classes for Wendy May and Greg Baumgarner. J. V.’s believe To find a friend, be one. 6 i Happiness is a touchdown to raise our dampened spirits. Father Time brought change and with it came new attitudes, new knowledge, and new people. Des¬ pite the alteration, congeniality remained constant in the activities of MSHS. A smile, a word of recognition, or a birthday celebra¬ tion composed a vital link between individuals. New students witnessed the transformation from being new to being a part of our school. By extending a hand of friendship, the motto To find a friend, be one, was fulfilled. In ( reativit The hands of creativity extended in various directions during the school year. Evidence of the students ' originality and imagination was obvious throughout the school. Sounds of music, voices blended in drama and chorus, the busy clacking of Marionette and Hurricane typewriters, and discussions of art and interpre¬ tive dance echoed within the halls. By means of ornamental horticulture, industrial arts, voca¬ tional agriculture, home economics, and foreign language projects, students created instruments for enjoyment and possible future careers. A Christmas Dream brings Alan Dean and Kenn Nellis to the stage. Tender loving care helps even plants grow. 8 Rosemary Bass uses her artistic ability in bulletin board design. The sports’ staff of Scholastic Scoops records the latest athletic happenings. The Scarlettes display grace and precision in their performances. 9 James Corvin gets into character. Sculpting is only one of Dewayne Miller ' s talents in the field of art. Modern dance gives opportunity for expression. Debby Tilson, alias Mrs. Savage, holds her most prized possession. In versatility • . . From the classroom to the football field, from the library to the gymnasium, the hand of versatility touched the phases of school life. Midst the daily buzz of research and study, students still found time for extras. Each group and each person proved themselves to be amazingly adaptable to changing situations. Each school month found individuals developing their skills and broadening their interests. Jonithan Blevins can capture ANY audience. The cheerleaders show pride in their country, as well as in their school. 13 Mr. Henry, the professional and the hillbilly. Candy Hinton illustrates one phase of home- making. Our faculty-the family man, the coach, and the teacher. 14 Two sides of Cyndy Ellis ' s musical talents. And now ladies and gentlemen... In hilarity . . • Moments of hilarity, no matter how brief, lifted the strain of everyday life. Anecdotes throughout school activities brought a chuckle or a grin to the most serious faces. Teachers and students joined forces to prove that fun and frivolity may still abound in times of hard work. Cares were stored away and troubles forgotten in exchange for moments of light-heartedness. MSHS forgot the daily school routine, but most likely she will remember when the hands of joy brought resounding laughter. I wanta be ju-u-ust like you when I grow up. Cookie, anyone? Is this our faculty? 17 • • • Howie W. Worm gets ready to do his thing. What you see Is NOT what you get. 18 The Devil made me do it. Mr. May puts in a plug for Women ' s Lib. The Golden Wave gets the brush-off even before the game. 19 In variety Cheers arose as applause echoed the pleasure of the audience. Enthusiasm greeted performances whenever students gathered. Each assembly was unique in its own way regardless of the atmosphere, mood, or content. Learned individuals devoted their time and effort in providing a steady flow of entertainment, whether educational, relaxing, or inspirational. The cares of classes were lightened when the hand of variety made its imprint on our school. Interpretive reading takes a great deal of talent. The chorus lift their voices in praise to the Lord. Johnny Crewey tells the student body about homecoming when he was a student. 20 The Junior Class replaces the newlyweds with more familiar faces. Coach Harkins beams his approval of the womanless beauty pageant. The Humanities Group proves the unchanging nature of love. In integrity Love your country-love your nation. Aware of contemporary trends toward protest, our student body defended the honor of MSHS in academics, sports, and extra-curricular activities. Pupils exhibited sincerity as they strived to obtain higher goals. They proved their loyalty and uprightness by showing respect for their school, community, and nation. In spite of all outside pressures, feelings of patriotism and concern for others acted as bonding forces between freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. I pledge allegiance to the flag. Friendship is important even when you ' re competitors. 22 • • • Captains Bobby Blevins and Mike Slemp extend the hand of sportsmanship. Joyce Shields presents Citizen of the Month awards to Carlos Blattner and Monica Campos. Kay Parks gives serious thought to her studies. you D£P£N|} UPON THf Lord; the lord dep£vd L POK YOU 23 In opportuni tv . . . Contests offered a chance to compete; clubs offered places for community service; above all, classes offered opportunity for learning. Upon reaching high school, students began to realize the time for decisions had arrived. They grasped at prospects for self-improvement, not only knowledge but job openings, scholarships, and awards. Regardless of the goals already obtained, hands were continually reaching for the next rung on the ladder of success. Foreign Language students use various techniques to understand new aspects of communication. Members of the Gamma Delta view Thanksgiving as a time of sharing with others. 24 Chemistry provides a channel for research in the chemical sciences. Not only sports, but scholarships, scholastic achievement, and community recognition were added together in making our school surpass its competitors. Athletic awards assembly, followed by scholastic awards, brought the realization that each recipient had offered years of practice and effort toward attaining his goals. This work was a must since friendhsip had no say in determining the victor. Throughout the year the hands of greatness touched MSHS and within her walls, the students were likewise touched with success. Valedictorian - Beth Buchanan; Salutatorian - Pam Parks. D.A.R. A smile or a frown, a grimace or a chuckle-these portrayed the moods of faculty and students as school days progressed. A cheerleader ' s joy, a beauty queen ' s delight, a teacher ' s disgust, and a student ' s interests were only a few of the many attitudes mirrored in the faces and actions of those involved with school. Each person ' s character and personality were revealed in a multitude of expressions. Even dress and modes of transportation added to the spirit after the hand of uniqueness brushed across our lives. Who needs more books? 30 Who cares how? We got here. Sharon Worton asks, “Is that a flower? Harriet Paschal, Steve Blevins, and Stella Dolinger reflect MSHS fashion trends. 31 • • Kay Fleenor really enjoys music. What did you say Mama Nile? Gaiety was rated near the top during the school year ' s activities. Attendance at sock hops and special dances confirmed that MSHS had experienced the new generation. Beautiful girls as well as hillbillies could be seen at one time or another at numerous events. Hands were busy preparing decorations for everything from a simple get-together to a formal prom. From the ridiculous to the elegant, students made the scene and added another good memory to their vast storehouse of times never to be forgotten. The bonfire reflects our spirit at Homecoming. 35 The French students try their hands at fondue, Cyndy Ellis and Cathy Snider, our Junior Miss representatives. 36 • • • Christmas Dance couples have their own celebration in Winter Wonderland. Expectations begin to rise as Carolyn, Vicky, Michelle, and Sarah prepare for the night ' s journey on the Carousel in Oz. 39 In agility Jeff Hart goes over the top for Marion. In the past school year, students proved that agility required quick thinking as well as quick moving. Our “Sleeping Giants skimmed across the basketball court to rally victory after victory. The Big Red Machine drove triumphantly through powerful defensive opposition. Plentiful sports activities supplied MSHS athletes with occasions to develop themselves physically. They also gave the student body a chance to reveal its enthusiasm toward our team. Gwyn Thompson gets ready to pass off to Sam Blevins. 40 David Echots heads into the end zone. Don Francis sinks a putt. 43 In unity The majorettes work together to boost spirits at a football game. Spines tingled, hearts beat faster, and spirit was high as the 1970-71 school year sent excitement throughout MSHS. The slogan, We Believe was a reminder that separate students believed in separate ideas. Despite this separation, when facing any challenging force the Marion students reacted with a spirit of togetherness. Knowing always that differences existed, the hand of unity swept through the school and left each heart echoing We ' re Number One! All right. Big Red, Let ' s give ' em all we ' ve got! The rain can ' t dampen our spirits. 44 • • Our students rally to any good cause as evidenced by the book drive. We run for office because we care for our school. 45 Administration is honored Smyth County School: Front Row: William C. Kelly; Mrs. Joyce Cornett; J. Leonard Mauck, Superintendent; Francis J. Copenhaver, Chairman; W. P. Buchanan. Second Row: S. D. Scott; Robert A. Hunter; Earle S. Horne; Laton E. Choate; Ralph B. Comer. Only with an efficient and reliable staff did Marion Senior High School operate for the 1970-71 school year. At the top of the scale, the school board worked to balance funds and guarantee top-grade teachers for Smyth County. More familiar to Marion High was its own administration with Mr. Williams, principal, and Mr. Henry, vice-principal. Just as necessary were the guidance staff, cafeteria staff, office workers and janitors. Enough credit was not given this hard-working group. Mr. E. R. Thompson, Director of Instruction, talks to a prospective teacher. Mr. Harlan Pafford, Supervisor of Secondary Education, confers with Mr. Williams about school problems. Mr. J.L. Mauck, Superintendent of Schools often relaxes with the teachers over lunch. 46 Mr. Howard Williams Mr. Williams puts in a busy day at the office. Mr. Henry relaxes during his heavy-scheduled and responsibility-laden day. Mr. David Henry 47 A complete staff Mrs. Winters does her best to keep the records straight. Never a problem goes unsolved when Wendy May consults the guidance department. The entire staff is composed of Mrs. Winters, Mrs. Linkous, Mrs. Wilson, Mrs. Echols, Mrs. Courtney, and Mr. Goodman. To help the cast smooth their lines and movements the directors, Mrs. Sally Werth and Mrs. Bill Pugh, and the student directors, Gwyn McCarty and Janet Meek, put in many long hours of hard work. Oh! Waters — our beloved S.C.A. sponsor, teacher, and friend — has sadly, yet irrevocably, etched its imprint upon pur beliefs. Throughout the 1970-1971 school year, we have missed her companionship, guidance, love, dedication, and zest for life. Too, all of us have deeply missed her leadership in school activities. Most of all, those of us in the S.C.A. have missed her counsel and wisdom. Her experience can never be replaced; her faith in us will remain as a constant inspiration. We believe that Marion Senior High School is a better place because of Mrs. Waters’ influence. And, just as firmly, we believe that the imprint we have of her etched in our innermost beliefs will constantly guide us. The finest tribute that we can pay her memory is to perpetuate her work and ideals. 87 The S. C.A. directs Front Row: John Sparger, Fred Sprinkle, Gary Price, Monica Campos, Carolyn Snider, John Thompson, Greg Baumgarner. Long meetings with much discussion typified the Student Council Association. The S.C.A. served as a medium between students and faculty. Through the S.C.A., students were able to relate problems within the school. The majority of these problems were rectified. All members of the S.C.A. strived to make MSHS an outstanding school of which the students could be proud. Officers, Front Row: Dickie Millard, Vice-President; Ronnie Kirby, President. It was the job of Greg Baumgarner to raise the flags every morning and to promote pride in our nation and school. Students exhibiting the qualities of good citizens were rewarded by being named Citizen of the Month. One boy and one girl were chosen each month. Jeannie Warren votes for citizen of the month while chairman Joyce Shields watches. Foreign exchange student, Monica Campos, finds the Bear family ' s jokes unbearably funny. 89 Good Citizens of the Month for September - Gwyn McCarty and Freddie Sprinkle. Citizens of the Month for November - Greg Baumgarner and Debbie Tilson. Citizens of the Month for January - Ronnie Kirby and Monica Campos. Citizens of the Month for October - Gary Price and Carol Richardson. Citizens of the Month for December - Carlos Blattner and Betty Hunter. Citizens of the Month for February - Edward Cressel and Janet Meek. 90 . Citizenship Citizens of the month for March - Bill Weaver and Pat Smythe. Citizens of the Month for April — John Bauman and Anne Froehling. Onc e each month, the assembled student body was given the announcement of the Citizens of the Month awards. One boy and one girl were nominated by each homeroom teacher according to merit and leadership. Final voting was done by the S.C.A. Council. The climax of these awards came when Pat Smythe and John Bauman were chosen from the list of Citizens of the Month to be the Citizens of the Year. Citizens for the Month of May — Johnny Johnson and Beth Buchanan. Citizens of the Year were Pat Smythe and John Bauman. 91 The Scholastic letters presented to those who scored highest on the competitive tests were jointly sponsored by the S.C.A. and the Beta Club. Lists of students taking the tests were compiled by Beth Morrell, Beth Buchanan, and Jackie White. Winners received awards in the Scholastic Awards Assembly. Special committees . . . Becky Brown and Cindy Schwartz were responsible for most of the bulletin boards found in the halls of MSHS this year. The bulletin boards were very attractive and represented various areas of school life. Susan Burnside, Anne Lambert, and Ronnie Kirby presented the new students with copies of the Swamp Fox. This handbook helped students to become acquainted with the rules of MSHS, and provided valuable information concerning school events. During the summer the Name Tag Committee was hard at work making tags for the faculty and entire student body. A different style was made for each class. The tags made it easier for students and teachers to become acquainted. To capture the memories of the 1970-71 school year, the S.C.A. compiled a scrapbook. Anne Froehling and Jenny Cornick worked long hours putting this book together and collecting material from all the clubs. 92 . . . The District Tournament held in Grundy gave Coach Harkins and his darkhorse” team an opportunity to prove that their 9-9 regular season was no indication of their worth as a team. After two dazzling victories, they lost a heartbreaker to Gate City to obtain second place. Gwyn and Sam scramble for the rebound. Ted shoots over opponent for two points. 124 J. V. Outstanding Season Kneeling: Eric Shankman, Coach Sayers, and Joe Thompson. Standing: Jerry Parks, Paul Graves, Mike Livesay, Mark McCloud, Kenny Parks, Kim Harvey, Jonithan Blevins, Bobby Hunter, John David Crewey, Jackie Bivens, and Alan Linkous. Coach Sayers was gifted with one of the most powerful J.V. basketball teams in the history of the school this year, and they amassed a brilliant 17-1 seasonal record. Their only toss was to Abingdon by three points, but they came back later in the year to beat Abingdon and avenge their loss. In the Smyth County Tournament, they appeared invincible and won the county championship with ease. Everyone knows Coach Harkins cannot wait to coach the future stars as Varsity roundballers next year. The Freshman basketball team, coached by Buddy Brockman, was composed of boys who had no previous basketball experience. Despite this handicap, the boys played exciting basketball all season long and showed promise as future J.V. and finally Varsity roundballers. The tough competition they faced this year will aid them in later campaigns, giving them the experience they need to play basketball against the type of competition they will see in later years. Kneeling: Teddy Murphy, Roger McNeil, Tommy Martin, Duane Mozingo, and Robert Parsons. Second Row: Coach Brockman, Charles Gill, David Roland, J. Arthur Guy, Jeff Richardson, Jay McDonald, and Chuck Richardson. 125 Hurricane Sextet Girl ' s Varsity Basketball. The ' 70- ' 71 girls ' varsity basketball team brought another season to a great close when they trampled their opponents to net a 12-2 record. Their efforts were rewarded when they captured the Smyth County Championship. The Junior Varsity Squad brought recognition to MSHS when they piled up twenty-six consecutive wins, making them an undefeated team for two straight years. Miss Jeannie Duncan coached both the varisty and junior varsity teams this year. Always noted for a great defensive team, the Hurricane is blessed with talented hitters this year as well. Coach Crowder also tutors one of the best pitching staffs in Southwest Virginia. coinwHnv I ■■Bl Steve Schwartz helps make a double play. Larry Carlton stretches for a throw at first base. Gifted with very talented returning lettermen such as Ron Kirby, Rusty Sneed, and Johnny Linkous, and many promising new athletes, the golf team is probably one of the strongest in recent years. Kenny Parks watches as Rusty sinks a putt. 131 Cross country Track Front Row: Carlos Blattner, Steve O ' Neal, Johnny Johnson, Edward Cressel, and Bobby Runyon. They are the ones who spend many hours trying to make each athletic event a big success. Besides going to a cheerleading camp in the summer, these girls put many hours of work into making new cheers, skits, and spirit signs. Sponsored by Mrs. Ann Burton each girl did her very best to create an epidemic of Hurricane Fever at MSHS this year. Dixie gives loving attention to Mr. Hurricane. 135 Jayvees and Scarlettes spread Hurricane fever The J.V. Cheerleaders took an active part in motivating spirit at MSHS. They cheered at all the J.V. games, at pep rallies, and helped the Varsity Cheerleaders at all times. Besides that, they made cupcakes and spirit signs and treated the boys at every game. Making the scene in their new white and red uniforms, these girls, without a doubt, made MSHS proud of its Junior Varsity teams. J.V. As a generation of believers, we must work toward peace and brotherhood among all men and all nations. The ' 71 HURRICANE staff hopes that each student will move on to attain higher goals. When the time comes for separation of seniors, juniors, sophomores, and freshmen, the hands of the future will not sever the bonds that were strengthened during this year of being together. % I I X 4 T s ' -v as ' 1 ii J vv5 ' • i?
