Page 10 8 Mr. Niswander instructs his boys in Industrial Arts. A Backward Glance The old bell rang out again and we students found our foot steps leading to the halls of Marion High for another year of readin ' , writin ' , and ' rithmetic. Yes, on September 6, the largest number of students in the history of Marion High School entered the auditorium to be welcomed back for a year of study, fun, excitement, and, for many of us, cherished memories. September 2 found many of the students already in the spirit as they cheered the hard-fighting boys on to wreck Rich Valley, 14-2, in the first football game of the season. The great day arrived on October 12. The day when no one had any trouble distinguishing the seniors from the underclassmen—the day when the class rings arrived. Rock Around the Clock started the ball to roll on the M. H. S. Homecoming activities as the Variety Show curtain went up on October 20. Everyone was rocking with school spirit as Marion ' s Scarlet Hurricane faced Abingdon ' s Mighty Midgets on October 21. This homecoming was different this year. The Hurricane boys came through with a 12-7 score to win the first homecoming for Marion in seven years. The highlight of the half-time was the crowning of the Homecoming queen, Alice Jasik, Queen Alice and her court, Margaret Eller, Martha McDonald, Elizabeth Anderson, and Barbara Starling, reigned over the Homecoming dance on the night of October 22. November 18 found the seniors and juniors attending College and Career Night to get acquainted with rep¬ resentatives from 19 colleges, 5 nursing schools, 3 business schools, one trade school and 3 industrial plants. All of us learned something of value that night and went on our way with a clear idea of our future. The Junior Class presented their play, Tempest and Sunshine , a comedy drama in three acts, on November 22. Ruth Berry and Judy Scott ably presented the leading roles along with a fine cast of others. A very welcomed Thanksgiv ing holiday began on November 24, The students got a much needed rest (?) ond perhaps the teachers needed one, too. No one could forget all the work the seniors did to finance their trip to Washington. With the selling of address labels, Christmas trees, and movie tickets, the seniors were well on their journey. December 3 was a happy day for the Hurricane basketball teams as the girls team downed Cleveland 71-69 and the boys rolled the Cleveland team 66-57 in the first game of the season. Our annual Winter Wonderland dance set the yule spirit moving as Joann Young and Kenny Mink were crowned Queen and King of Snow in a setting of Silver Bells . The M. H. S. Band and Chorus gave their annual Christmas Concert on December 18 to further our Christmas spirit. The band delivered a program of Christmas carols, hymns, and overtures, while the chorus gave a Christmas cantata. December 21 started the long-awaited Christmas holidays at M. H. S. On January 3 we returned from a two weeks vacation to begin the last miunte cramming for mid-term exams. Exams were given on January 23, 25, and 26, being interrupted on the 24th by a big snow, which gave oil of us an extra day for study. The FHA-FFA sponsored the Valentine dance in the M. H. S. gym on February 11. Gertrude Shumate and Roger Sturgill were crowned Queen and King of Hearts. Our beloved basketball teams ended the season with a 13-9 record for the boys and 12 wins, one loss for the girls. We sure were proud. On To Washington set the scene again on March 5 as the seniors teamed up against the faculty to play the annual game. Arrayed in blue jeans and ribbons, war paint and signs on their backs, the seniors met their superiors on even grounds to be defeated in the girls game and to win the boys. For only 20 cents the students of M. H. S. got out of two whole classes on March 8 to view the Beta Club Talent Show. On March 12 Marion students were honored with the presence of Dave Rubinoff, world violinist, as he presented a short concert for the pleasure and entertainment of all. March 23 marked the date as the Marionette Sock Hop took over at M. H. S. My, what socksll Then as the time grew short there was the FBLA Sadie Hawkins Square Dance , club conventions, track meets, baseball games, Easter vacation, the Senior play, One Foot In Heaven, the Junior-Senior Prom, and numerous other spring events on the M. H. S. calendar. Oh, yes, we can ' t forget the seniors trip to the Capital City. Of course, at the end of it all was t he most important thing—GRADUATION!! The seniors were leaving and the juniors would replace them, but the hearts of everyone would always have a warm spot for dear old M. H. S.
