SENIOR AUTOGRAPHS Page 105 Marionette Award The MARIONETTE award is a dream which came true. John Dickenson dreamed in 1949 of having an ward to honor the club, organization, group, or individual which, during the school year, shows the greatest achievement in bring recogni¬ tion to Marion High School and shows good citi¬ zenship. Even though he had the dream it was not his fortune to have it established while he was editor of the MARIONETTE. The MARIONETTE award came into being in 1950-1951 while Martha Ellen Boatwright was editor of the paper. Since then it has been given annually, the winner being chosen by a student- faculty committee. The award is given on the basis of qualifications wh ich were originally drawn up by John Dicken¬ son and the principal, Mr. William J. Delong. Any person, group, club, or organization that by its achievements brings recognition to Marion High School during the school year is eligible for nom¬ ination. They must have shown good school citizenship and attained their achievements by their own ef¬ forts. Also, they must be recognized as a credi¬ table organization by the student body and must have high ideals and purposes. In 1951 the award was presented to the one act play cast which won the State One-Act Group II contest at Charlottesville, Virginia, the play being, I ' m A Fool. The 1952 trophy was given to the 1951 HURRI¬ CANE which won a first place at the Southern Interscholastic Press Association Convention, Lex¬ ington, Virginia. The prized possession went to the basketball team and Mr. Charles Franzen in 1953; this group captured the State Group II Basketball champion¬ ship at Blacksburg, Virginia. Then in 1954 sports again claimed it as the track team which staged an upset victory in the State Group II Track Meet at Charlottesville, won the coveted award. At this time this synopsis is being written 1955 ' s winner has yet to be chosen but when the time comes there will be many who could very well win it. But only one can be victorious. Many wonder to whom the 1955 trophy will go. That question will be answered June 3, when Sandro Groseclose, 1955 editor of the MARION¬ ETTE, will present the winner with a small en¬ graved trophy during the Senior Assembly. While each winner individually gets a small engraved trophy, the large trophy, which stays at Marion High School, is engraved with that year ' s winner and lists all winners since the award was established. Winner, MARIONETTE AWARD, 1955 Page 106 A Backward Glance Giving up lazy days on the beach, sleeping late in the mornings, and a life of ease, we reluctantly headed our footsteps toward the worn path of good ole M. H. S. to begin another school year. After being heartily welcomed back on the morning of September 7, we became aware of the fate which had befallen us and de¬ cided we might as well buckle down and get to work. Coach Charles Cooper really worked hard moulding our football boys into a fighting, scrapping team and his efforts paid off when the Scarlet Hurricane opened the season by trampling the Rich Valley Steers 13 to 0. However, this game turned out to be a forfeit due to the ineligibility of one player. On October 14, the curtain went up on the 1954 Variety show, M. H. S. Makin ' Whoppee , ending with the faculty ' s never-to-be-forgotten Hokey-Pokey. Yes, Homecoming was here and we all tensely and excitedly looked forward to our game with the Golden Wave of Grundy. Despite the delay caused by Hurricane Hazel, the Homecoming activities got off to a good start with the parade preceding the game. The band led the parade in its dazzling new uniforms followed by twenty-nine different and original floats. Our spirits were definitely dampened though, when the Grundy eleven upset all hopes of a Homecoming vic¬ tory by defeating us 25 to 15. One of the highlights of the game was the half-time crowning of our Homecom¬ ing queen, Peggy Jarrett by our principal, Mr. Gillespie. That night she and her court, Faye Taylor, Betty Jo Moore, Martha McDonald, and Alice Jasik reigned over the festive and traditional Homecoming dance held in the M. H. S. gym, bringing another Homecoming to an end. Finally, on October 21, the long awaited and dreamed of Senior Class rings arrived with the seniors being easily distinguished from all other because they had their hands stuck out in front of them. On Tuesday, November 9, the M. H. S. Senior Chorus made its first public appearance as part of the Ameri¬ can Education week program. The students of Marion High happily welcomed November 25 and 26 — Thanksgiving Holidays. Maybe this gave the teachers a much needed rest and a chance to get away from it all, too. Who knows? I ' m sure none of us will ever forget our ever-busy seniors who did everything from shining shoes to baking pies to help finance their trip to Washington — a hard working buch of kids with a lot of determination. On December 1, the Scarlet Hurricane and Hurricanette opened their 1954-1955 basketball season by a double header with Castlewood. Although both teams were defeated in this first game, boys 69-59 and the girls 46-34, these high-spirited ball players didn ' t give up, and ended the season with excellent records: boys 16 wins and 7 losses; girls 11 wins 1 loss, 1 tie. Girl Shy , a sparkling three-act comedy, was presented by the Junior class on December 2. Ned Legard and Barbara Phipps led a very capable cast directed by Miss Pauline Anderson and Mr. A. L. Mitchell. College Night was held at M. H. S. December 6, to help the juniors and seniors with further educational plans so that they might get acquainted with the type of college they expect to attend. We all went home with many problems of college straightened out and a much better view of college life. On December 16, the Marion High School Band and Chorus gave a combined concert in the school audi¬ torium. The band presented many numbers and the chorus a polished cantata which added to our rising Yule- tide spirit. December 17, our gala Winter Wonderland Dance was held with a gay yuletide atmosphere. Prince Phil Schulz and Princess Annette Ellis reigned over the occasion. Finally the happily-anticipated Christmas holidays began on December 21, and we joyfully departed from school for a very Merry Christmas. January 3, found us back at school with nerves on edge and worn books from studying for those miserable exams which we were forced to face on January 21, 24, and 25, with a much needed 26th holiday to recuper- aet — but only for students — teachers had to work! We almost overlooked something. On January 7, our most honored faculty beat the Juvenile Delinquent Seniors twice in the On to Washington basketball games. Maybe the seniors just wanted to give them a break. How about that? The M. H. S. Girls ' varsity basketball squad played in the preliminary game to the District VII tournament on March 5, tieing Honaker in a hard fought battle 63 to 63. Miss Phyllis Eblen was elected by the F. H. A. to reign as queen over the Sweetheart Dance on February 12. The Beta Club Talent Show was a huge success with it ' s From Outer Space, Down to Earth theme. We mustn ' t forget the fact that Ben Fulton, an active Beta, was elected State Beta President also. Then there was the Tri-Hi-Y County Fair held on March 25. Fog on the Valley , Marion ' s one act play, won a distinguished rating in the county contest and also a su¬ perior rating in the district contest. On March 18, the fellows and gals got all dolled up to swing their partners at the D.E. - F.B.L.A. square dance held in the high school gym. Our wonderful band, which we ' re all so proud of, traveled to Richlands to win a number one rating in the festival held on March 19. Lewis Pugh, our own Senior, who is the Youth Governor of Virginia, presided at the Model General Assem¬ bly at Richmond the last of March. Then there was the Senior play, Apartment 13 , held in April and also the senior ' s unforgettable trip to Washington, As we come to the close of a busy but successful year, we are still looking forward to the forensic meets, baseball and track season, club conventions, the Junior-Senior Prom, Easter vacation, and various other spring events. And last but not least is — GRADUATION! Of course we ' ll miss our seniors and we hope they ' ll miss us too, but after all, twelve years is a pretty long time, BETTY JO MOORE — Historian of the Senior Class Page 107 BASTIAN BROTHERS COMPANY ROCHESTER, NEW YORK Serving Marion High with ENGRAVED ANNOUNCEMENTS and NAME CARDS Superior Qgality Class Rings ☆ PAUL A.
