A friend out of class as well as an understanding teacher in the schoolroom he is always ready to lend a helping hand. He is always present to direct activities at the socials and to cheer for the athletic teams. The same spirit of cooperation is exhibited if there is a program to be presented or a club to be advised. Therefore, we dedicate The 1950 Hurricane to our friend and teacher MR. A. L. It is the memory of a noble friend like this which will always keep Jackie alive in our hearts. A. WILKINSON Sponsor Last Will and Testament We, the graduating class of 1950, Marion High School, City of Marion, County of Smyth, State of Virginia, after winning our last battle of the Four Years ' War with Latin, English, Geometry, History, etc., do leave collectively and individually these qualities—the spoils of our Victory, which have been most helpful in our rise to success with a hope that the beneficiaries, set forth herein, will use them to their greatest advantage. Being of unsound and undisposing mind, possessing unusual intellectual qualities and likewise physical standards, and considering the uncertainty of life, we do hereby make, publish, and declare this as and for our last will and testament. ARTICLE I The entire Senior Class—our youth and beauty to the faculty to use as they see fit. We also leave our sincere appreciation of their good intentions, hoping that we will be forgiven for not realizing their fond hopes at an earlier date. To the oncoming seniors of next year we bequeath our desks, with the hearty wish that they will not occupy them for more than a year. Of our knowledge we have none to spare, but we leave best wishes for their great success. To the oncoming freshmen we leave a map so that they will not get lost in the halls while changing classes. ARTICLE II I, James Stephenson, leave my seat on the front row to Harold Wright, providing he doesn ' t have to go to summer school and if he does, it will be taken by Ax Haga. I, Betty Foster, will to Rosa Lee West my seat in Mr. McDonald ' s history class. (Poor girl!!!) I, Kenneth Grinstead, will to any one my ability to get into trouble. Since they don ' t already have enough!!! I, Willis Kegley, will my mathematical ability to all the lower classmen in hopes that Mr. Wilkinson won ' t grow any more gray hair. I, Camilla Carter, will my ability to get along with people to Dorothy Foti. I, Vernon McKinnon, leave my ability to annoy Miss Doby to Bob Goodman, and hope he will carry on the good work to the best advantage. I, Major Bowen, will my position as tackle on the football team to Joe Campbell. I, Daddy Hoover, will my position as center on the basketball team to Paul Eblen with the hope that he will do a better job than I. I, Daniel Gullion, will my excellent English ability to any pupils who may by chance get in Miss Anderson ' s class. I, K. Baumgardner, will my desire (not ability) to tinker with radios to Walter May. I, Frances Vogt, will my seat in Mr. Dutton ' s chemistry class and my grades to Richard Clark. I, Glenna Sturgill, will my timid personality to Katherine Whiteaker. Heaven knows, she needs itll! I, Lucy Wymer, will my love to play basketball to all the girls that come out for it next year. Left with only the bare necessities to face my life ahead, I herewith affix my signature as attorney for the Senior Class of 1950. Signed, GLENNA STURGILL Senior Prophecy Arriving back in Marion after my ten years extensive travel around the United States and Mexico, I decided I would look up my old classmates of ' 50 and see how they were doing in this cruel world. After some inquiring I found Major Bowen, still just like he was as a senior, seated behind his desk in his new Virginian Hotel. Seems as if he had just followed his dad ' s footsteps in the hotel business. To my surprise I found Glenna Sturgill as his private secretary. From Major I learned that Vernon McKinnon was doing fine in the Service Station business. After seeing Vernon, I decided I would visit the new Marion Consolidated High School and, much to my surprise, there I found Kenneth Grinstead teaching D. E. Talking to Kenneth, I learned that he had married Betty Foster and now had two chil¬ dren, a boy and a girl. From M. C. H. S., I went out to Station WHOA, Marion ' s new television station to see K. Baumgardner, the manager, and James Stephenson, King of the Golden Cowboys , who has his own show over a national hookup. Arriving back in town, I ran upon Dan Gullion, Marion ' s most eligible bachelor, with Lucy Wymer, now a model in Marion ' s most exclusive dress shop. Leaving Dan and Lucy, I saw two good looking nurses down the street, which I recognized as Frances Vogt and Elouise Long, who, I found, were nurses in John Hopkins Hospital. Willis Kegley was the next classmate I visited. Willis now is raising Hereford cattle on his farm just eost of Marion. Last but not least, was Eugene Hoover, the big boy, who now is playing professional football in New York. Having visited all the students of the class of ' 50, I decided to look up Mr. Wilkinson, our homeroom teacher. I found him at the city recreation center teaching young kids to smash each other ' s noses. After looking in on oil my classmates and my teacher, I decided that I must leave before the cops recognized me. Seems that I am the only failure in the thrifty class of ' 50. It was quite a year. That same year in Burlington, North Carolina, workmen were clearing a nearby cornfield to build a small textile mill. Some local businessmen were risking their money in a bedspread manufacturing venture. That was the beginning of Burlington Mills, a company destined to play a leading role in the rise of man-made yarn from obscurity to a place of major importance in textiles. During the past 25 years Burlington Mills has grown from one small mill at Burlington into one of the world ' s largest producers of rayon fabrics. It now has 74 plants in six states and four foreign countries employing over 27,000 people. Teamwork between management and skilled, loyal em¬ ployees made Burlington Mills a textile leader. Teamwork also produced the highest quality textile products at the lowest possible cost. This successful formula was possible because American free enterprise permitted constant improvements in mate¬ rials and machinery, development of our human resources, better methods of production, and an incentive for progress and growth. The formula brought better quality fabrics to the consumer. It brought better jobs, higher pay, increased benefits, and excellent working conditions to employees. And so, 25 years after, Burlington Mills wears a badge of success. Its multitude of products are truly Woven Into the Life of America . Sales Offices-. New York, N. Y.
