The older students made us seventh graders feel that we were definitely a part of the high school by letting us have a large representation at the Holston District S.C.A. meeting. That year our Glee Club won high honors in the county contest, along with a number of spellers. 1941- 42 looked upon us as the underdogs or rats , but we proved our strength and ability at Field Day, under the direction of Mr. Carmack. The State Board of Education saw us coming and made physical education compulsory. 1942- 43 was a rather quiet year, although we fought our way through algebra prob¬ lems, Ancient History questions, and Latin vocabularies. 1943- 44 brought us nearer our goal. Two of the most outstanding events of the year were the Hi-Y banquet and the Junior-Senior picnic. Of course we all looked forward to and en¬ joyed very much the themes written in history! 1944- 45 saw us reach our destination. This was a very busy year as it is with all seniors. The most outstanding events were the Hi-Y banquet, the play, The Scarecrow Creeps, (which, incidentally, broke all records in attendance), the picnic, the prom, and finally graduation. In the defense program, we have contributed our time, effort and ability by having a number of boys serve as messengers and firefighters; buying war bonds and stamps, and contributing to all the civic and patriotic drives the school has undertaken. Here we want to give honorable mention to the boys from our class now in the armed forces. Four we espe¬ cially miss are John Pennington, Earl Cregger, Jimmy Vaught, and Rex Jones. Also in connec¬ tion with the defense program, special pre-induction classes are being taught to the boys ex¬ pecting to leave soon after graduation. Although we have the smallest class to be graduated from the new building, the smart¬ est, and the youngest, we have been well represented in such clubs as Torch-Y, Hi-Y, Beta, Science, Personality, Pep, Collecting, Glee, and Home Ec. Many were in the first band organ¬ ized and entered the contests at Radford and Johnson City, where superior rating was be¬ stowed upon them. We proudly sent one of our number to the S.C.A. meeting in Wytheville as district secretary this year. • In sports we won fame, too. The boys ' basketball team journeyed to Roanoke to enter the tourname nt this year. The girls ' drill team, the snake dances, and dances after games helped create enthusiasm. The teams will miss a number of our boys and girls next year. As the time for graduation approaches, we, the senior class of 1945, wish to thank all of our teachers and friends who have been so kind and patient with us all these years, helping us to prepare ourselves for our future life. This play, due to Miss Flora Copen- haver ' s expert direction and much hard work, was fairly boiling over with atmosphere. It was given in three acts, separated by only a moment or two, and used one set, the living room of Gage Manor. The characters are as follows: Roderick Gage an old man of fierce and dominant character, who is the owner of a large estate and untold wealth_ Kenneth Gage, Roderick ' s nephew, a promising young doctor_ Perry Gage, also Roderick ' s nephew, a stort shory writer- Norma Gage, Roderick ' s young and beautiful cousin_ Annabelle Gage, Roderick ' s fussy, fat and fifty sister-in-law- Amelia Gage, spiritualistic spinster cousin of the owner of Gage Manor- Adam Throgg, Roderick Gage ' s butler_ Maudie Hobbs, corn-fed maid at Gage Manor- Aunt Zinnia Washington, Roderick ' s temporary colored mammy cook- Trailing Arbutus, Aunt Zinnia ' s grown boy, and chore boy- The Scarecrow, a mysterious figure in tattered rags_ _EDWIN HAS ' HNGS _GILES WALKER _REED COUNTS ROSAMOND CALHOUN _BETTY TILSON _ANN ANDERSON _JIMMIE TODD _VADA PRATER _EDITH CULBERT _MACK STURGILL .BERYL McMillan The characters are involved in a plot that is hair-raising from beginning to end. It starts when Roderick Gage informs his assembled relatives, marooned at Gage Manor by flood, that a priceless diamond is hidden somewhere in the old house, and promises to will all his property to the one who finds the jewel. Ghosts walk, characters disappear into thin air, and comedy alternates with horror before the guilty party is finally dis¬ covered. The jewel mystery is explained, and the curtain falls on a reunited family and a happy ending for the romantic leads. THE SENIOR PLAY The auditorium was packed to capacity on both nights of the performance, and from the gasps, chuckles, and screams that prevailed, The Scarecrow Creeps was judged a huge success. The entire senior class helped, in one way or another, to put on the play. Scenery was made in the school shop, costumes were arranged, and makeup applied by members of the various committees who kept the play rolling. Members of the production staff who deserve special credit for the almost pro¬ fessional lighting and sound effects, the scenery, makeup, and other details, are Edward Tomlinson, Wayne Weaver, Joe Rector, John Scott, Billy Hubble, Charlotte Starrette, June Hicks, Nancy McDonald, Fay Elledge, Margie Greer, Carolyn Mc¬ Clure, Mary Jim Boyd, Jane Lamb, and Darrell Snider. M. H. S. WEATHER CHART-1945 Storm warnings appear in local papers. Flurries prevail at notebook and pencil counters. Hurricane strikes M. H. S. from all directions.
