T 0 Better Marion The great improvement of the Marion Marching Band brought admiration from the community. Win- ning 25th place at the State Fair among the 96 bands entered and carrying off first place honors at Ball State University, they continued to march in various parades throughout the fall. Each Band member wore his black and gold uniform with a great deal of pride. With the cooperation of school and community, Marion collected a large sum for the United Fund. During October the flaming UF torch lighted the northwest walk of the courthouseg in MHS each of the homerooms donated its share toward the school offering that helped swell the total. Business owners andprivate citizens showed more generosity by providing cars, truck beds, and places to work for the float builders readying for the sixth Homecoming parade. All the clubs participating real- ized and appreciated the community cooperation in all these undertakings.

Many of Marion High's 2100 students have part- time jobs that give them the opportunity to fulfill re- quirements for adult responsibility. Teen centers are often visited by MHS'ers for relaxa- tion and a chance to talk with friends away from the busy school scene. The scenic views of Matter Park were a great change from the hub-bub of Marion's traffic and business area. This year over 700 parents attended Open House at MHS on November 7. A colorful display of student work was presented in each room. The Cactus staff worked hard to obtain an all-time high in selling the yearbook.
