The Giants seemed to take this Win to heart and came out of the season with an 8-1 record. The Anderson Indians were the only team to defeat the Giants in the reg- makes star showing ular scheduled meets. The team also added laurels to their crown by placing third in the conference and sectional meets. Chief point getter for the Giants this year was Duane Bishir. Bishir paced the Giants through most of the season Winning several blue ribbons. He Was the only Giant to run in the state cross country meet. The first few games featured lineup jug- glings and miscellaneous experimentations by Weir, and the mentor babied the goalers through the last half of the year, shrewdly priming them to hit their peak at tourna- ment time. Marion gained momentum through the latter part of the season and finished sixth in the Conference standings, aided by a home record which indicated only one loss on the Coliseum boards. The usual starting lineup included Klein and Norman Edwards at forwards, Francis Fisher at center, and Dean Vogel and jim Barley at guards. Chester Jones, Ed Bick, Ronnie Montgomery, Bob Casey, and John Banter formed the reliable bench brigade. The Little Giant B team, hampered with a constantly shifting personnel, could muster only seven wins in 17 contests, however Coach Clem Woltman's charges should furnish valuable material to next year's varsity. The usual lineup featured Andy Wyckoff, who led the scoring with 92 tallies, and Bob Bradford at forwards, Bill Wharton at center, and C. W. Perry and Don Weber at guards. Bottom Row-D. Dougherty, F. Mills TRACK TEAM :marks up jine recom' Wfhile many people consider track as an individual sport, Coach Ray Sears and his assistant, James Murphy have promoted it as a team sport. Training rules are strict, and each event requires hours and hours of patient practice. At the beginning of the season Marion started out Well by scoring impressive vic- tories over Kokomo and Muncie in dual meets and Huntington and Peru in a tri- angular meet. After the usual preliminary meets, the Giants entered the Delphi Relays, placing a decisive first. Close on the heels of the re- lays came the North Central Conference meet in which the Giants gained fifth place in the high competition, being outscored by Anderson, Tech. Clndianapolisj , Muncie and Frankfort in order. Following the Conference meet, Marion placed second in the Sectional at Kokomo and the following Week they qualified three men for the State finals at Butler Field, Indianapolis. The three making the Indianapolis trip Wereg Duane Bishir in the mile run, Ed Bick in the 440 yard run, and Cantrill Gulliford in the hurdles. Bick and Bishir automatically placed in the main events by their performances in the region- al meet but Gulliford was obliged to tryout in the forenoon before entering the finals in the afternoon. Outstanding in the year,s performance were Cantrill Gulliford in the high hurdles, Ed Bick, who twice broke his own 1949 record in the 440, Ron Bishop in the 220, Harry Hahn in the high jump, and Freddy Mills and Duane Bishir in distance. Jim Coleman, who transferred from Anderson, added depth to the squad but Was unfor- tunate in being unable to participate in several meets because of injury. Joan Hedges reigned as 1950 Track Queen, with Katie Flook and Ann Finley as her attendants. The B team gave promise of a successful track season next year, as several promising prospects for varsity appeared on the hor- izon during the season. The squad ended the year with a better than averageu record. Hurdle-jumping Gulliford goes over Assistant Coach jim Murphy and Coleman goes up and over the bar the timbers. Under the able direction of Joe Bell, who prepared his charges with a summer of American Legion baseball, the Giants waged a strong bid for the confer- ence title and remained in the thick of the battle to the end. The 1950 squad showed remarkable im- provement in the department usually lack- ing in high school nines - hitting power. The Bellmen proved adequate in this de- partment and backed up the offense with tight defensive units in both the infield and outer garden. Seniors Ed Ring and Tom Kelham form- ed the nucleus for the pitching staff. Out- standing was sophomore Art Herring, who notched several impressive triumphs. Gene Howell, southpaw, did excellent relief work. The usual lineup consisted of Pat Klein at first, Bob Gowin or Milt Hawkins, at second, C. W. Perry at short, Norm Ed- wards at third, Ken Ohlemeyer, Derrill Smith and Andy Wyckoff in the outfield, and Algie Carter or Don Bradford behind the plate. A B team was formed for the first time. Coached by Woody Weir the boys spent hours of practice on the Country Club course perfecting wood and iron shots for the frays. There was keen competition for the five available positions, but Johnny Grubb, Phil Broyles, Fred Edwards, john Foster and Jay Longacre survived as the varsity team. Marion has developed several good golf- ers in the past, and the 1950 team was one of the' most successful. The Marion team will lose three members this year, but with interest in golf growing and two veteran members remaining, it should not be too difficult to produce a winning team in 'S 1. Wamon TENNIS This year another sport was inaugurated at Marion High. Under the guidance of Mr. Dwight Hutcheson, twenty boys have been playing tennis on an intramural basis. Since Marion has only one tennis court, the Giants cannot enter into Conference tennis competition until next year, when the JAC Courts at Matter Park will be completed. Although this sport was in the experi- mental stages this season, plans for con- tinuing it permanently have been advanced. CHEERLEADERS Precision timing and originality were characterictics displayed by this year's cheerleaders. Among their novelty yells were: T-E-A-M, Rag Mop, and Let's Fight. At Indiana University they attended the annual Cheerleader's Convention, with their sponsor, Mr. Bernard Carmin. They are from left to right EuGene Swain, Barbara Lynn, Eddie Blocker, and Joan Hedges. Bottom Row-T. Miller, R. Holley, W. Shearer Top Row-R. Bishop, A. The big moment arrived! Cn went the senior cords and the class of 1950 started its final year at Marion High School. Following the election of officers, vari- ous committees were appointed by the president to plan commencement and other social activities for the year. Measurements for caps and gowns were taken in December, an after game dance i was sponsored by the class in January, orders for namecards and invitations were taken in February, a courtesy program was presented in Marchg Senior Banquet was served May 23, and Baccalaureate was held May 28. Activities were climaxed on June 1 by the annual Commencement exercises and, on June 2 by final report cards. Seniors, faculty members, and other school mates mourned the untimely death of Bobby Joe Dovin on Easter morning, April 9, 1950. His friends will partic- ularly remember his cheerful greeting, Hi there, what ya doing? or his quick bit of wit. His smile for everyone will be noticeably absent when the gang gets together. lad HW-. W Y Q- Q Y sb ef K .a ,, 2.
