Under the able lead- ership of president, Clyde james, vice president, Rex Garrg secretary, NVilma Bakery and treasurer, Betty Comerg they sold chances on a radio given away at the Cactus Miss Ethel A. Renbarger Frolic. As in the previous years the class of 49', decorated the Christ- mas tree in the front hall. The ex- cited newcomers elected as their candidates for Easter Parade at- tendants: Rita Fightmaster, Jo- sephine Todd, Beverly Hubbard, Linda Pierson, and Sally Ramp. The following year, now as juniors, the class elected Bob Conn, president: Tom Deal, vice presi- dentg Drake Circle, treasurer, and Nlifilma Baker, secretary. For this year's project, pencils with basket- ball schedules on them were sold. For their contribution to entertain- ment they held an after game dance at the Y. M. C. A. This year they elected as their candidates for Easter Attendantsg Marcia Mc- Greevy, Betty Comer, Leona Ramp, Barbara Moon, and Pat Armstrong. The highlight of the Junior year was the annual junior-Senior Prom with Evelyn Walls presiding as queen. At last the students came back as Seniors. Acting with superiority over the under-classmen, they elected to fill their wishes, Carl Gossett, president: Bob Conn, vice president: Barbara Moon, secretary, Don Gunion, treasurer. Many senior cords could be seen roaming the halls, this adding only to the misery of the new Sophomores. During Courtesy six weeks the class sponsored a program on this sub- ject. Acting along with the Stu- dent Council various senior com- mittees helped with their all school dance. Chairmen appointed for the various committees were social, Pat Nallyg commencement, Alice Can- trill: service, Betty Comerg cap and gown, Mary liowlerq publicity, Bob S li a f fe r g baccalaureate, Robert Shirarg financial, Don Guniong and invitations, Pat Armstrong. The graduating class was repre- sented this year for the Easter Pa- rade by Linda Pierson, june Doles, and Glenda Stiles. It is to the vari- ous sponsors, Miss Marion Bread- heft, Mr. Elbert Tillett, Miss Mild- red Aveline, Mr. W'illard Batson, Miss Marjorie Connelly, and Miss Ethel Renbarger, that this graduat- ing class owes much for their suc- cessful and happy days at M.H.S. The re- sults being Eddie Cole, presiclentg Phil Fowler, vice-president, Marilyn Martin, secretaryg Dewey Hall, treasurer. Under the able direction of their sponsors Miss Mildred Aveline, and Mr. V. How many of you have attained what was planned for you a year ago? The home, the church, and the school expects certain acts from each of us, yet someone passes by the wayside fquits schoolj almost daily and does not do his share for the community or himself. It is the duty of every girl and boy to advance in school as far as the means will allow. Make the best marks possible, but by all means be a normal person when it comes to behavior and manners. Without apple-polishing , favorably impress the other person. Have enough personality to sell. Keep in mind that a child,s actions away from home are usually the results of training in the home. Don't embarrass your family and most of all don't embarrass yourself. If you don't know the answers, ask your parents, your teachers, or your counsellors. 1.et's make plans for next year and make it better than the past. In Marion High School an attempt has been made to offer a place where the pupil may learn to analyze facts, to reason from them and de- velop insight and inventiveness. The greatest need of education is for inten- sive research to discover the best curriculum for developing the child,s basic mental activity. Our world and society is changing rapidly. We do not know what kind of mental activities may be required of the average American a decade from now. The faculty has made every attempt to prepare all of our students for these changes that will come. He was aided by a terrific block on the pant of Shirar and end Tom Williaiias. Bradley ran around right end for the conversion that made the scoreboard read 25-13 Marion. XVilliams and Polston were the defensive heroes of the week. Muncie Central 26 - Marion 6 The Muncie Central Bearcats fthat's putting them mildlyj invaded Memorial Field and pro- ceeded to walk all over our Giants. Homer Bradburn and Kenny Delk were the mainstays of the Bear- cat offense while the outstanding defensive Giants were Bull Bradley, Charles Polston, and Charlie Bowlds. The game was slow for the first half but every one of the cats had cut loose in the remaining two frames. The final score 26-6. Marion 7 -- Frankfort 0 It was a cool, clear night at Frankfort when the Marion Giants tackled the Nighthawks. Neither team could penetrate its opponents 20 yard line during the first half. Frankfort opened their bag of tricks, reverses and double reverses to keep the Giants baffled. The third quarter saw both teams threat- ening but failing to score. The Nighthawks got as far as the 17 yard line before Jones intercepted a Frankfort aerial. Marion drove to the Frankfort 4 yard line before losing the ball on downs. Witli zn minutes to go Ralph Kicker punted out of bounds on the Marion 12. Many people began to talk of a scoreless tie but Marion started to move. Four plays moved the ball up to the 30. Cantrill Gulliford playing fullback in place of Bob Shirar, went off right tackle 39 yards to the Frankfort 31. Frank- fort called time out with one minute and 47 sec- onds left. On the very next play Gulliford screen-passed to jones who went the remaining 31 yards behind the protection of the entire Giant for- ward wall. In the remaining minute and a half, Frankfort began throwing desperation passes. Jones intercepted one and returned to the 24. Four plays later Gulliford carried the ball to the Nighthawks 42. Tom Willianis downed the ball. Time ran out two plays later. XVilliams, Bradley, and Bowlds were the standouts for the Giants on defense. Elwood Panthers 20 - Marion 20 Roger Rock jones again led our Giants with a brilliant evening's work at the half back slot. But our Giants fell short in a rough and tumble battle. Going into the final minutes, Elwood took over on downs and scored to knot up the game 20-20. Marion marched to the Elwood 34 and at- tempted a touchdown screen play. The pass was complete but our receiver was swarmed to ground by the knock down-drag out Panthers on the 13 yard line just shy of a deserved, game winning T.D. The final score again 20-20. Marion 25 - Wabttsli 35 Bob Shirar put the Marion footballers into an early lead, as he pulled his way through the middle from five yards out. The Giants trailed 14-7 just before the half but two jones to Gulliford aerials put the Giants out in front 19-14 at half time. Wabgisli scored three more times before the Giants came back with a last minute tally. New Castle 19 -- Marion 14 The battle started in the early minutes of the second quarter when Dick W'halen pitched a pass from their 27 yard line Jack XVright received and went the remaining distance untouched. The Trojans missed the conversion and the score stood 6-0. The game was dull until the third quarter when New Castle marched 77 yards to the Marion 4 yard line where Jim Dailey carried it across. Donnie Carl last of the six sen- iors lost by graduation, played his final game in the regionals, Donnie was a small but shifty guard for MHS. Pat Klein, although hampered by minor injuries in his junior year, should be a mainstay of the Giants next year. Pat played outstanding ball in all of the games in which he participated. The loose jointed Pat pulled several games out of the fire with his hook shots. Charles McNeeley, a junior, showed much promise this year. Chuck, despite his roughness, can hit very well and should prove to be a mainstay next year. Cantrill Gulliford, another junior, played as a center on the 48-49 Giants. Cantrill is a big boy who could prove to be very useful to Woody Weir's '49-'50 Marion Giants. Ed Bick was one of the two sopho- mores who played varsity ball this year. While not getting into many ball games, Ed showed fight and speed on the floor. Ed has two more years in which to show his stuff. Francis Fisher, a tall lanky center for the Giants, has an opportunity to be one of MI-IS's truly great basketball players in the next two years. The Giants had a bigger schedule this year due to the fact that more transportation was available. The Searsmen had a fairly good season this year. They won six of their nine meets, five of which were slams and the other lacked two points of being a slam. Ander- son, which has taken the state champion- ship in Cross Country for several years, nosed out Marion by only one point in a dual meet. The Giants ended their sea- son by placing fifth in the conference, fifrli in the Sectional with Lorenzo Fleece placing second in both and going on to the state meet as an individual runner where he led the first mile and placed tenth. The harrier squad began their practice on August 17, continuing throughout the season on a IZ and 2 mile course. Mr. Sears calculated that the boys had run 300 miles during their season. Letter awards were given to the follow- ing: Seniors, Lorenzo Fleece, Tom Deal, and Jim Eastesg Juniors, Dewey Hall, Sophomores, Freddy Mills, Freshman, Lind- ley CDocJ Wagner. Derrold Johnson had the hard job of stu- dent manager for our cross country team. He had to keep the uniforms clean, check out the uniforms, and help keep the sta- tistics. He was awarded a letter at the con- clusion of the season during the award presentations before the student body by coach Ray Sears. 51101 V Yo Front Q.L 1ZCl'-SCJFS, Coach Bottom Row-Hatter, Piishir, Mills, Snider, Fleece, W'.lgncr 'lop Row-jackson, Deal, Ixastes, I-isher, Hall, Shrock B b CROSS COUNTRY SCHEDULE fLow score winsj Marion Opponents 17 Washington QIndp.j 38 1 S Logansport 40 1 S Fairmount 40 2 8 Anderson 27 1 S Kokomo 40 3 1 Mississinewa 24 15 Muncie Central 40 1 S Lafayette 40 39 Wabash 19 Conference Sth Place Sectional Sth Place Won 6 Lost 3 SEARSEMEN WARMUP JSFVT-mg DERROLD JOHNSON AHIII HIGH TH!-Ulli TE!-11VI ll ta Ray Sears, coach Ray Sears has completed his third year of guiding our thinly clads to many victories. Those nominated were: Sue Mann, ,Iackie Roush, Sue Ireland, Marilyn ,feffery and Mary James. Sue Mann and Marilyn Jeffery were elected as attendants to Her Highness, the 1949 track queen, Miss Mary James. These girls were nomin- ated by the track squad, but they were elected by the student body. The queen presented the various winners with their ribbons following each event. Marion enjoyed a fairly successful season along the cinder paths. The Marion Giants completed the season with a better than average won and lost record. Mainstays of our Marion track team this season who scored heavily in the seasonis meets were: Ed Bick, Rocky Jones, Cantrill Culliford, Tom Vice, Lorenzo Fleece, Bob Shirar, Duane Bishir, and Tom Deal. Prospects for the 1950 version of the MHS tracksters are especially encouraging. Ed Bick, whom we found very adept on the hardwood, as well as on cinder path, will be active in the dashes, 100 yard, 220 yard, 440 yard, and the relay squad. C. XV. The 1950 Marion High School cinder squad will not inherit the many talented and seasoned performers in the field events that the 1949 squad possessed. There are several promising participants that may prove valuable for one or two more seasons on the track squad. Besides the regular scheduled meets, Mar- ion took part in the Kokomo Relays, Muncie Relays and the Delphi Relays. Toward the close of the season several boys were entered in the sectional track meet. Xvinners there were entered in the Regional meet and from there those placing either first or second were entered in the state meet at Butler Iiield, Indianapolis. Marion was represented in all these meets but was not able to win many points in the final meet due to the stiff competition from other parts of the state. Ray Sears' able assistant, James Murphy, better known as Murph,'7 has a wealth of track experience. He is a graduate of Marion High School. He holds the shotput record for the high school. He spent three years in high school trackg three years at Purdue: two years at Ball State, where he participated mainly in field events, and he spent seven years, from 1938-1945, as an independent runner. It serves to defray expenses which otherwise would be paid for by advertise- ments, and gives the student body a part in the production of the book. This year, the Ifrolie was a huge success, largely due to the many clubs and organi- zations that made it that way. There is no need to enumerate the lfrolie numbers, for they will always be remem- bered as part of the biggest and best 'Trolieu Nl.H.S. has ever seen. Another joint-band affair was held at the Muncie game when the Bearcats brought their band to Marion. Appearing at all home football games, Veteran's Day Parade, Cactus Frolic, co- sponsoring the Paul Xvhiteman Concert, and a trip to Muncie Field House to hear the U. S. Marine Band Concert gave the band a busy fall season. The band also par- ticipated in a Santa Claus Parade. Band officers were elected as follows: ,lames Clouse, presidentg James Fisher, vice-president: Jeri Elliott, secretaryg and Katherine Luckey, treasurer. These officers discharged their duties efficiently and faithfully and made possible many of the band's activities. At the opening game of the basketball sea- son the girls wore, for the first time, their newly purchased gold sweat sacks, and with a hundred girls in a solid block they really stood out in appearance as well as yells. Under the careful guidance of their president, Betty Comer, the girls set out to make the club better than ever before. As- sisting Betty in planning the various activ- ities of the club were senior, junior, and sophomore board members, Pauline Farley, Barbara Moon, Susan Sisson, Marilyn Jef- fery, Evelyn Humes, annd Jackie Faulkner. As in previous years, the Booster Club sold football and basketball pins to help boost the morale of the Marion Giants. At WATCH THOSE GIANTS GO MHS HUUSTEH III. B various occasions the girls sponsored pep sessions and pep parades. They met in the auditorium every XY'ednesday with the cheerleaders to practice yells and songs which helped to make them one of the most outftandinng cheering sections in ln- diana. Come tournament time the Booster Girls worked diligently to make purple and gold streamers for the Sectional and Regional Tourneys. Many new songs were written by the girls and were exceptionally well re- ceived at the games. Concluding the basketball season the girls served at the athletic banquet for the County teams. They elected officers for the coming year at the close of school. In addition to the one hundred girls, sixty boys from the Hi-Y filled two com- plete rows on both sides of the girls block. Their outfits consisted of dark trousers, white shirts, bow-ties, and upon their heads they wore purple and gold beanies with the Hi-Y emblem printed on them. Members were, Barbara Truex, Betty Bailey, Marcia Thorne, Delores Deeter, Patricia Armstrong, Barbara Moon, Betty Comer, Pauline Farley, Alice Cantrill, Ros- alie Gugel, Margaret Chambers, Barbara Alleman, Joan Zabst, Earlene Stephenson, Evelyn Humes, Jackie Faulkner, Janet 'XY'oodard, Myra Reagan, Barbara Hodge, Nfadonna Curtis, Barbara Graham, Betty Banter, Donna Burns, Sally Pearson, Janet GO GET EM PAGES AND CROWN BEARER ISABEL ALEXANDER MILDRED CHASE MARYBELLE HERRING ROBERTA MORRIS HIGHLIGHTS OF I949 EASTER PARADE 95 M, .W A ., H ., - ., Nwxw mr ---N-M 1-W-f-5 A . , E. f.XX MW ..X, , E iw 5 Y 2 3' EH CALENDAR SEPTEMBER Students of M H S beg1n to rotate agaxn for another b1g year Student Counc1l representatly es chosen Survey subscrlp t1on drlve gets under way Hurrah' Football season IS here agam and band we re off to another n1ne months OCTOBER Gossett elected Sen1or Class Presldent Sophomores are mtroduced to yarlous clubs Suryey sponsors dance Mlghty fancy ntterbuggmg Cast chosen for Our Town Cactus Staff holds potluck Yummy Hear1ng tests are g1ven Y Teens hold the1r flrst meetmg of the year Club Off1CCfS elected NOVEMBER Cactus Frollc H1 Y 1I1llfl'ItlOI'l Student councll and Spamsh Club dance Attentxonl All studcs New books ad led to l1brary Caps and Gowns chosen At long last the basketball season starts Good luck team' Smell that turl ty?
