THE VISTAN I FOREWORD from the Staff YOUR TREASURE CHEST Make for yourself a treasure chest, But not for gems and gold - Fill it with things more rare and fine, As full as it will hold. Into it place your kindly thoughts, Of friends whom you hold dear, The classes, the teachers, the happy hours. That fill your life with cheer. And then if dark days come along, And your bright prospects mar, Open your treasure chest and see How very rich you are! DEDICATION TO MRS. PEARL S. GARRETT In 1947-48 the first yearbook this school ever printed was dedicated to you with these words: In grateful appreci- ation for the time and patience you have given us all four years in high school. We should like to re-emphasize that statement and to add - - - You have commanded our love and respect by your devotion, sacrifice, and time unselfishly given to the pupils and activities of this school. In the armed forces they would say, For services above and beyond the call of duty, a sincere' thank you. TO MRS. MYRTLE H. HART G t4 U 973, Thank you for the many years of service rendered in this county as Public Health Nurse, for the many days spent working in our school in the P.T. A. im- munization program, in the Eye Clinic, Ear Clinic, and Dental Clinic. Your good cheer and calmness has done much to allay our fears and your efficiency has nelped give Marion County a health program of which we are proud. PRINCIPALS MESSAGE CONGRATULATIONS, GRADUATES OF 1961! As you leave Marion County High School, you are attaining one of the goals of your life. Broader fields of learning and service are opening to you. You are now facing experiences which will test you. physically, mentally, and spiritually. It is my fer- vent hope that you have discovered in your four years here something of the true mean- ing of life. In your interpretation of life, I wonder if you have formed some of these conclusions: 1. That life offers genuine rewards to those who merit them. 2. That habits of thrift and sobriety are important assets. 3. That real nobility of life calls for true gentility of character. 4. That every individual needs divine aid to bring his life to full fruition. It is my hope that your life will incorporate all of these and that you will enjoy the richness of life which these make possible. ADMINISTRATION « SEATED: Mr. Allen Davis. Sixteen members have completed their schooling here. These include Annette Goodroe, Chap Williams, Buster Burgin, Margie Gloss, Ellen Helms, Sally Lowe, Wiley McAllister, Susie Moss, Sandra Owens, Charles Snider, Mark Snider, Brenda Powell, Arthur Powell, Wayne Harbuck, Mariola Hart, and Jean Webb. Thirteen more joined us when our schools were consolidated four years later. Among these are George Goodroe, Judy Halley, Carolyn Davis, Loxie Wells, Lanier Roberts, Marlene Sanders, Carolyn Smith, Clarence Welch, Gary Watson. Clide Grier, Gloria McCorkle, Benny Curlee, and Larry Joe Underwood. Others that have joined us through the years are Ripley Stamper, Sara Ann Isom, Calvin Brown, Sherry Bickerstaff, Ruble Youngblood, and Faye Austin. The year of 1957-58 was a great year for this class. It was in this year that we be- came Freshmen in Marion County High School. Our sponsors were Mrs Louise Lowe and Mrs. Rosa Pryor. Our presiding officers were Beverly Powell and Brenda Powell. We entered the Sophomore Class of 1958 with Mrs. Pearl Garrett and Miss Evie White as our sponsors. Brenda Powell and Sally Lowe were our class presidents. It was during this year that we began to feel more at ease in high school and to take an active part in activities. In the fall of 1959, we became Juniors under the sponsorship of Mrs. Pearl Garrett and Mrs. Louise Lowe. Under their direction, we made enough money to give the Seniors of '60 a Prom Dance. Planning and presenting our theme, the Cinderella Ball, proved to be the most exciting and exasperating event of the year. Another highlight of our Junior year was the Red Fox Band's trip to Jacksonville, Florida, to participate in the Gator Bowl. Also a special honor came to our class when ten of our members were tapped to becoming members of the Beta Club. In the beginning of the 1960-61 school term, we found ourselves in the much desired place of being Seniors. We had finally become the upperclassmen with Mrs. Pearl Garrett and Mrs. Marian McGlaun as our sponsors. We enjoyed all the excitement of being Seniors but getting our rings was the top thrill. The Beta members attended the State Beta Convention in Atlanta in March. Also our boys' basketball team brought a special and rare honor to us when they won first place in our Regional Tournament and then played in the State Tournament. Our class was well-represented in all activities throughout our high school years. Jean Webb, Sally Lowe, Chap Williams. Susie Moss, Mariola Hart, Bennie Curlee, Wayne Harbuck, Buster Burgin, Carolyn Davis, and Loxie Wells were members of the Red Fox Band who had many wonderful and worthwhile experiences while in the band. Brenda Powell, Sara Ann Isom, Lanier Roberts, George Goodroe, Ripley Stamper, Arthur Powell, and Calvin Brown were members of the basketball teams whose actions on the basketball courts brought honors to them, our class, and our school. Other clubs and activities in which our class participated included the Co-ed Y Club, Business Club, Beta Club. Library Club, FHA and FFA. Some were majorettes, cheerleaders, and on the Pioneer and Vistan Staffs. We, the class of 1961, are grateful to everyone who has helped to make our years at M C H S happy and worthwhile. We shall always give these years and this school a special place in our hearts. MARION COUNTY’S REPRESENTATIVES WIN FIRST PLACES These first places were won by our boys and girls after the 1960 Vistan went to press.
