History of Senior Class of ’59 In 1947 fourteen members of the present Senior Class entered the first grade of Marion County High School. They are: Jo Ann Benson, Stella Ann Bond, Larry Chapman, Gail Crozier, Kay Duke, Dicky Goodroe, Donnie McAllister, Elmo McAllister, Peggy Moore, Ronald Owens, Jacqueline Powell, Iralu Robin- son, and Douglas Webb. Jack Gloss and Boyce Miller have also attended this school for their entire education. The other twenty-six members of our class have joined us since that time. Our Freshman year began in 1955, with Miss Betty McCorkle and Mrs. Louise Lowe as our sponsors. Dicky Goodroe and Gail Crozier were the presidents of the two sections. There were sixty-three of us in all. At the end of this year Kay Duke and Iralu Robinson attended the National Convention of the Future Homemakers in Chicago. In 1956 we became Sophomores. Mb. Oma Croxton sponsored one section of our class the first semester and Mrs. Pearl Garrett returned to teaching the second semester. The other section of our class was sponsored by Miss Evie White. Dicky Goodroe was president of the class of fifty. Band, F. F. A., F. H. A., and Basketball were our main activities. We were Juniors in 1957 with Miss Josephine Lovelace and Mrs. Marion Mc- Glaun as our sponsors. Boyce Miller was the president, and our number had dropped to forty. Sherry Rush placed first in the District Typing Contest. Larry Chapman attended Cotton Producers Association in Denver, Colorado. Donald Wells represented our F. F. A. chapter at the National Convention in Kansas City. Fifteen Juniors were tapped to become members in the Beta Club. The highlight of the year was the Junior-Senior Prom-Dance. The theme was Oriental Gardens” and featured the Tea House, the Wishing Well, and a canopy of red studded with gold stars, which were very characteristic of an Oriental Night. In the fall of 1958 thirty-nine pupils became Seniors. We were privileged to have our same sponsors. Miss Josephine Lovelace and Mrs. Marian McGlaun. Jimmy Roberts was elected president of the class. Money for graduation events was raised by tunning the concession booth at the basketball games. The Senior Betas attended the State Convention of the Beta Club in Atlanta on Match 13th, 14th, and 15th. They presented a skit on stunt night. Our class was been well represented in all activities throughout our high school years. Vemer Alexander, Joe Ann Benson, Stella Bond, Kay Duke, Dicky Goodroe, Henry Harbuck, Rudolph Killingsworth, Iralu Robinson, and Douglas Webb have contributed greatly to the Red Fox Band and have reaped much experience, knowledge, fun, and many trips from its activities. The Basketball Teams have profited by having Jimmy Roberts, Boyce Miller, Kenneth Pope, Donald Wells, Dicky Goodroe, Tommy Stewart, Mary Nell Harbuck, and Gail Roberts play hard and fight to win the game. The last two seasons in which these players were on the team have been most successful for our school. Gail Crozier, Jacqueline Powell and Rudolph Killingsworth have served as cheerleaders. The majorettes were sparked by Kay Duke, Iralu Robinson, and Drum Major, Jo Ann Benson. We have also had many participants in F. F. A., F.H.A., Business Club, Library Club, and Co-Ed Hi - Y. We, the Class of '59, are sincerely grateful to the faculty, parents, and friends for these happy, important years of our life.
