HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1956-57 Ten members of the 1956-57 Senior Class have attended school all twelve years in Marion County High School. They are Cliff Hollis, Jerry Croxton, Fay McAllister, Kathleen Jordan, Helena Williams, Bobby Curlee, Jeanette Owens, Stout Powell, Leon Cook, and Donald Highnote. In 1953-54, we were Freshmen, with Mr. Burch Haynes and Miss Dorris Callahan as sponsors. There were thirty-eight students in the class. Bobby Cur- lee and Fay McAllister were elected King and Queen of Smile Week. Abb Preston and Janice Crawley were King and Queen at the Halloween Carnival. We had many pupils in Glee Club, Hi-Y, Tri-Hi-Y, and the various clubs and organizations. We became Sophomores in 1954-55 under the continued sponsorship of Mr. Haynes and Miss Callahan with forty pupils in the class. Our class presidents were Fay McAllister and Benny Pike. Five students of our class were on the bas- ketball teams. They were Cliff Hollis, Frank Powell, Bobby Welch, Donald Highnote, and Fay McAlister. We were represented by Burt Roberts and Kath- leen Jordan at the Halloween Carnival. Bobby Welch won a trip to Purdue Uni- versity through F.F.A. In the fall of 1955-56 twenty-seven Juniors entered school, sponsored by Miss Evie White and Miss Dorris Callahan. Three of these pupils, Geraldine Bryan, Oliver Wilson, and Gene Smith moved away, leaving our number at twenty-four. This year Benny Pike entered the Vocabee” Contest. Donald Highnote and Arlene Tyler were King and Queen at the Halloween Carnival. The main event of this year for us was the Junior-Senior Prom-Dance, held in April in the gymnasium. The theme was Hitch Your Wagon to a Star. All of us thrilled to the orchestra under a canopy of blue studded with silver stars. The beginning of the 1956-57 school term found our number reduced to twenty-three. Our activities for the year were directed by Mr. B. G. Moores, Mr. George McGlaun, and Mr. W. C. Mathews. We have worked hard to raise the necessary funds to make the annual class trip to Washington, D. C. Our projects have been: selling magazines, selling Christmas cards, cooperat- ing with the Lion's Club in getting up the Birthday Calendar, running the con- cession booth at the ballgames. and sponsoring dances. As our Senior year goes into the last semester, we have almost reached the goal in financing this trip. Other noteworthy events in our lives are: the marriage of Stout Powell to Shir- ley Hall, Ellen Harbuck's move to Florida and return, Cliff Hollis' and Elaine Roberts' excellent scoring in the ballgames, Jerry Croxton's high placing in the All-State Band at the Music Festival held in Athens on January 5th, Fay Mc- Allister's being chosen as F.F.A. Chapter Sweetheart, and Fay McAllister's and Helena Williams' contribution as cheerleaders this year. We, the class of '57, sincerely appreciate the opportunities, instruction, and fun we have had at MCHS and shall love her more dearly as the years go by.
