HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1954-’55 Education began for the Class of '55 in 1943. Twelve members of the present Senior Class have attended school all twelve years here at Marion County High School. They are: J. R. Ammons, Barbara Belk, Beverly Belk, Beverly Burgin, Larry Dillard, Billy Goodroe, Drane Hart, Charles Helms, Carolyn Henson, Jule McAllister, Eliza- beth McCorkle and Thelma Powell. Our Freshman year began in 1951-52, with Mrs. Pearl Short as our sponsor. There were forty-eight members in the class. Our Class President was Beverly Belk. Billy Goodroe and Carmen Carter represented us as King and Queen in the Halloween Car- nival. As Sophomores in 1952-53, we were again under the sponsorship of Mrs. Short. Our President was Beverly Burgin. The class membership increased to fifty-one with the additions of Larry Brown, Otis Highnote, Burt Roberts and Raiford Wright. The Sophomores were well represented in extra-curricular activities with six in basketball, twenty-four in F. H. A., twelve in F. F. A., twenty-two in Masque and Gavel, and two Cheerleaders. Our King and Queen in the Halloween Carnival were Gene Chris- topher and Betty Sue Preston. As upperclassmen in our Junior year, the class membership dropped to thirty-six because of marriage, transfer to other schools, and various other reasons. Mr. A. L. Brown was our class sponsor. The Juniors displayed enthusiasm for the many organiza- tions of the school, having thirteen in Glee Club, four in Band, two Cheerleaders, six ball players, twelve in Business Club, three in F.F. A., eight in F.H. A., and fifteeu in the Beta Club. Our Class President was Billy Goodroe. During our Junior year, our major concern was to make money enough to give the Seniors a dance at the end of the year. The date of the Junior-Senior Prom was May 14. The gym was decorated in the theme of An Old Fashioned Garden, and music for the dance was furnished by an orchestra. The Junior year was full of other wonderful times and events. Billy Mike Duke and Jane King represented die class in the Halloween Carnival. The Class of '55 opened their Senior year under the sponsorship of Mr. A. L. Brown. The enrollment was thirty-«x, including a new member, Lonnie Fielder, but we lost I Reba Barrett, ,Betty Sue Preston and lizabeth McCorkle during die year. Billy Good- roe again served our Class as President. Herbert Phillips and Elizabeth McCorkle, re- presenting the Senior Class, were crowned King and Queen of the Carnival. The Seniors were again very active in school organizations, having seven in basketball, one Cheer- leader, five in Band, six in Glee Club, fifteen in Beta Club, nine in M Club, seven on the Pioneer Staff, and eight on the Vistan Staff. The primary aim of the Seniors in their last year, besides graduating, was raising money for the trip to Washington. The money was made by selling barbecue, Christ- mas cards and wrappings, magazine subscriptions, fruit cakes, MCHS bracelets, and candy and drinks in the store and machines at the school. Our class grew up with the school and watched the many improvements which brought our school up from a C school in an old school building to a B school in a magnificent new plant. We are grateful for the instruction and the many advantages which we have received in Marion County High School.
