History of the Class of 1954 Back in 1942, twelve years ago, the members of the Class of '54 began the first year of their education. Only seven of the 36 of us have completed the entire 12 years in Marion County High School: Walter Mathews, Sue McAllister, Faye Cook, Nannie Owens, Jerome Studdard, Roland Benson and Janis Goodroe. Two others, Tuck Rainey and Adrienne McCorkle, also began with us, then left us, but are back to graduate with us. Others have been transferred from other schools at some time during the 12 years. Our Freshman year, 1950-51, was exciting for all 61 of us. Our sponsor was Mrs, Pearl Short. Margaret Pilcher was Class President. We chose Betty Powell as our Queen and Gene Rush as our King of the Halloween Carnival. We had six girls and three boys on the basketball teams; seven of these lettering. Nearly everyone joined either F. H. A. or F. F. A. In 1951 52, we became Sophomores under the sponsorship of Mrs. Louise Lowe. There were only 44 of us that year as a result of transference, preference for the Fresh- man Class, marriage and other reasons. Those whom we lost were: Betty Barrett, Margie Britton, Charles Hodges, Tommy Miller, Reba Harbuck, Eugene Youngblood, Otis Highnote, Bobby Curlee, Bruce Moore, Jimmy Rush, Edward Stubbs, Beatrice Youngblood, Jimmy Rainey Wells, Shirley Jean Moore, Austin Eason, Larry Brown and Elizabeth Foster. We made a good showing in extra-curricular activities that year, with four girls and four boys on the ball teams, 16 invited to join Beta, 25 in Tri-Hi-Y and Hi-Y, one cheerleader and eight in Masque and Gavel. Our King and Queen of the Carnival were Merrill Harbuck and Curtis Hutchinson. Our Class President was Margaret Pilcher. In 1952-53, all 44 of us were back as Upj er-classmen. During the year we lost Virginia Dinkins, Wynelle Walters and James Stringfellow, but gained Tuck Rainey. Mrs. Lowe was again our sponsor. The Junior year was full of exciting good times. Our President was Roland Benson. There were seven members on the ball teams and in the M Club, five on The Vistan Staff, 15 in Beta Club, 12 in F.H. A., 10 in F.F. A., 15 in Masque and Gavel, and one cheerleader. Our King and Queen were Gene Rush and Betty Powell. Under Mrs. Lowe's guidance, we were able to raise enough money to entertain the Seniors with a lovely Junior-Senior Banquet, with an Oriental motif. We entered the Senior Class of 1953-54 with 38 members, having lost Wesley McAllister, Max Davis, Billy Welch and Curtis Hutchinson. Later, we lost Melba Gloss, who married, and Margaret Pilcher, who moved to Florida, leaving 36 to graduate. We have been Busy as Bees” trying to raise enough money for a trip to Washington D.C., after graduation. Under the sponsorship of Mrs. Louise Lowe the first semester and Mrs. Ann Dickinson the second, we have carried on various activities, such as: sell- ing magazine subscriptions and Christmas cards, serving the Lions Club, selling barbecue, candy and drinks, working at clean-up day, and sharing in the Annual profits. Our interest in extra-cunicular activities intensified during our last year. Fifteen were Betas, six were on the basketball teams, nine in the M Club, 10 in Tri-Hi-Y, five in Hi-Y, 20 in F. H. A., eight in F. F. A., three cheerleaders, five in F. T. A., eight in Science Club, seven in F.B.L.A., and six in drama. Seven Seniors were on the Pioneer Staff, and eight on The Vistan Staff. Jerome Studdard served as our President. Our Carnival King and Queen were Larry Johnson and Agnes Gloss.
