DEDICATION Mel King We dedicate our yearbook to Mel King for his efforts in bringing the people of Boston together. We hope to help the Rainbow Coalition’s efforts in making Boston a better place in which to live and work. One of the reasons we decided to make our dedication to Mr. King is because he has said he always believed in politics of inclusion and the importance of having a neighborhood, a city, a state, a country, a world where all people could work together for the benefit of all people. He feels it is important for people who have been denied full rights of participation to come together and work together so all rights of all people can be available or granted. The Rainbow Coalition wasn’t solely his idea. “The rainbow has been around a long time,” he said, “ever since the Creator said to Noah, “I give you this ark in the sky and the rainbow as a covenant for peace, harmony, respect, love.” Mr. King also believes that the rainbow is a symbol of people coming together. “Some feel the Rainbow Coalition is for people of color. That is not true. It’s for all who believe, who work with respect. It’s for all people with respect and justice.” And about his accomplishments with the Rainbow Coalition he says, “It is important to recognize these aren’t my accomplishments. They are our accomplishments. And nothing happens without the participation, involvement, support, and cooperation of lots of people. One thing is participating with people who have worked to make jobs available for people in the city of Boston. And that means more employment opportunities for students—high school students in particular. The need for employment is very much a concern for young people.” Mr. King graduated from Boston Technical High School and Claflin College, was a State Representative, is a Professor at M.I.T., is married and has six children. “Tell the students at Umana they've got the whole world in their hands. They should love themselves so they can love their neighbors. Work for peace with justice.”
