i e en en mb Fn REN atio Umana Harbor - School of Science a = and Technology. 312 Border Street ia East Boston, MA.02128 ceil” 569-6280 — eee ne ee DEDICATION Mel King We dedicate our yearbook to Mel King for his efforts in bringing the people of Boston together. We hope to help the Rainbow Coalition’s efforts in making Boston a better place in which to live and work. One of the reasons we decided to make our dedication to Mr. King is because he has said he always believed in politics of inclusion and the importance of having a neighborhood, a city, a state, a country, a world where all people could work together for the benefit of all people. He feels it is important for people who have been denied full rights of participation to come together and work together so all rights of all people can be available or granted. The Rainbow Coalition wasn’t solely his idea. “The rainbow has been around a long time,” he said, “ever since the Creator said to Noah, “I give you this ark in the sky and the rainbow as a covenant for peace, harmony, respect, love.” Mr. King also believes that the rainbow is a symbol of people coming together. “Some feel the Rainbow Coalition is for people of color. That is not true. It’s for all who believe, who work with respect. It’s for all people with respect and justice.” And about his accomplishments with the Rainbow Coalition he says, “It is important to recognize these aren’t my accomplishments. They are our accomplishments. And nothing happens without the participation, involvement, support, and cooperation of lots of people. One thing is participating with people who have worked to make jobs available for people in the city of Boston. And that means more employment opportunities for students—high school students in particular. The need for employment is very much a concern for young people.” Mr. King graduated from Boston Technical High School and Claflin College, was a State Representative, is a Professor at M.I.T., is married and has six children. “Tell the students at Umana they've got the whole world in their hands. They should love themselves so they can love their neighbors. Work for peace with justice.” GUSTAVE ANGLIN, HEADMASTER MESSAGE TO THE SENIOR CLASS Members of the Class of 1984. I would like to congratulate you for a job well done. You have just completed a major educational achievement. This is the beginning of many others that you will accomplish during your lifetime. The next decade will require that a person is educationally equipped to meet the challenges found in the fields of Science and Technology. You have shown by your class achievements that you have the ability to succeed in any field of endeavor that you choose. Always strive to complete the goals that you have set for yourselves. They should be realistic, challenging and attainable. To succeed, it will take perseverance, determination, and commitment. I wish you the best of luck in all of your endeavors. However, I felt the team could have done better if they were more consistent in their overall play. Congratulations to Jonah McCall for being selected to the All City Team and Jonah, Bill Ruliera, and Ed Murray as the Team’s M.V.P.’s. McCall Umana is coming off of a 3-12 season. This year after a strong start, Boston’s top four Division III Teams put a halt to their streak. Losing to East Boston by 2, Charlestown by one, and Southie by 1 has kept the boys high on their prospects for next year. Losing only two starting seniors, this young ball club will be the team to reckon with next year, as the juniors on the squad have all seen lots of play- ing time this year. Expect Umana to spoil some tourney expecta- tions for some of the better ball clubs by year’s end. j JUNIOR VARSITY Front (1 to r) A. King, T. Brown, J. Johnson, G. Gomes. Back: Coach R. Johnson, W. Practice began after Thanksgiving with high hopes of suc- cess. This year’s team was bright, big, and experienced with six seniors on the nine-person squad. They went through the regular season with a 14 win 0 loss, beating each district school twice. After losing to Boston English in the City Tour- nament, the team reached the state finals against Ipswich High, losing a close game. The team conducted themselves with pride and maturity, while being the most successful team in Umana’s history. Frances Andruszkiewicz, Lesa Dennis, Donalee Dixon, Lisa Moreau, Lorex Pendleton, and Carolyn Vick will be gone next year and sorely missed. Good luck to these fine players and all the graduating seniors in the future. This year was a throw-together team that came in a strong second place in league competition, with 7 wins and 1 loss. Outstanding swimmers were Joe Chaput, Stephen Hardiman, Paul Duro, Mark Hawker, Lam Doa and David Newman. Outstanding diver, who start- ed for the first time this year, was Marc Bennett. Hopefully next year’s team will be even better since all but three will be returning. Thanks to Peggy Lee for her assistance during meets and practices to make the team a success. The successful part is the boys, one and all, who gave one hundred and ten percent each and every game. Only one boy is going to graduate, so next year we promise to do better. We had one boy elected to the all star team. He is Michael Bean. Oh my God! Where’s my stick? A young Umana baseball team completed a successful year under the leadership of their senior co-captains, Al Siciliano and Marty Joyce. Al, the most outstanding pitcher in the city of Boston, pitched ten games and allowed only 1.62 earned runs per game. Marty, one of the top hitters and third basemen in the League, led the team in batting with a .455 average. Also, Mart hit safely in all fourteen games played. The Umana baseball team is a team of the future. However, they will greatly miss Al Siciliano and Marty Joyce, two fine young athletes and young men to eximplify. - eS American Legion Field 5 0 Thurrrppp Determined od ES Se ee Sayer Home was never so far Future Star Get that off the field Where’s the ball? Not present Lorez Pendleton. A DEDICATION TO THE UMANA GIRL’S BASKETBALL TEAM Before the season even started, the team was not even considered to be in the running, according to the City’s newspaper. But through hard work and determination, they proved to the news- paper and to all they were worthy of the title “Boston Division I] Champs”. The only undefeated team in Umana’s history with an undisputed 14 win 0 loss record was led by six experienced seniors. The team fought far into the State Tournament, only to lose a nailbiter to Ipswich, ending the long season as Division II]-North Finalist. Lesa Dennis, Carolyn Vick and Frances Andruszkiewicz were named to the All-City Team and Lesa Dennis was chosen for the State’s All-Scholastic Se- cond Team. To the Girls and their out- standing coach, Robert Ohlson Please girls, I’ll never do it again. OUTDOOR TRACK The girls’ track team finished their season with a record of 5 wins and 1 loss. The most outstanding girl was Ramona Brown. Ramona remained undefeated the entire season. She placed first in the city meet in the 100 yard run. Ramona placed Ist in the Section D division of the state meet. She will finish the season by running in the All-States and the Eastern Massachusetts Tournament. The 400 relay also placed 2nd in the city meet. Members were Barbara Najjar, Juanita Timson, Carol Scott, and Ramona Brown. Ramona also finished 2nd in the long jump in the city finals. The boys’ track team finished with a 3 wins 3 losses record. The outstanding performance was by Jerome Curry in the high hurdles and the triple jump. i. 7 sg ee ONE EAE BOE: cscempemansemascsan ee ete ewes See ee secnee_ Savon amen snti et: sein ans nese ‘etten et SREY RETR ANSRNNN ST nem : 4 ¢ Back: Bill Newsom, Fred Dolan, Al Newson, Juan Maximo, Marc Alston, Darin de Gale, Andre Brown, Jerome Curry, Teresa Fulcher, Marlon Wright, Juanita Timson, Ramona Brown, Coach Franklin.
