During the current school year grade ten students have analyzed the water in Bos- ton Harbor for dissolved gases and pollu- tants. Grade eleven students have studied par- ticuliar problems in soil analysis, includ- ing PH of soil and specific nutrients found in the soil. Grade twelve students have studied the economic impact pollution has on our so- ciety and specifically how the ultimate solution to the pollution problem in Bos- ton Harbor will enhance their opportuni- ties to enter the job market in areas asso- ciated with the enviroment. ee i 7 ae Ten years ago the words “environment”, “pollution ”, “recycle”, “ecosystem” and “ecology” were merely vocobulary words in a general science or biology course in most American high schools. In 1981 students at the Mario Umana Harbor School of Science and Technology are able to study and par- ticipate in a thorough curriculum of Environ- mental Science. - a — CHAM bmn yf S fl DL OF nV iaaw f= Og [ '(@) KOXED The most important aspect of the Medical Technology program at Umana High must be career education so that the student develops an awareness of the vast number of occupations in the medical field. 5 The goal of the Medical Technology program is to give the student basic principles, procedures and techniques that apply to laboratory works such as Hematology, Microbi- ology and Clinical Chemistry. In this course, the student rd arelire mx: Tiamer-Td em dared acexe(oX-mr-lave Matt aul(ed d (ela com ol-¥-1e) (i Ce) perform accurately and conscientiously the laboratory tests done in clinical laboratories. 45 COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY From the early days of counting on one’s hand, to the abacus, adding machines and modern math numbers have played an impor- tant role in society. The Comp uter Tech department introduces 9th graders to the world of data processing and computer science and provides instruction in problem solving and programming (BASIC- PLUS and FORTRAN) for Grades 10-12.
