AY, or? Gud ae “Ra As we go through life we must be intelligent, flexible, and stable enough to ee cope with the changing of society. We must be able to adapt to, and stand up s against new problems in everyday life as we encounter them. We must solve s these problems with the knowledge and energies which we have spent our is ry early formative years procuring. Hy H Of course, not many people are born with an understanding of applied iH mathematics to appease the tax man while still having money left for a few HH luxuries. And few possess a great enough english background to form the HS if 4 vocabulary needed to talk down that know-it-all neighbor. No, these things must be taught to us. That is where high school becomes a part of our lives. Yes high school, that grinding, grueling four years which starts at the fresh- man stage and culminates in the climax we all look forward to; the Senior year. High school, a program to prepare us for life in the real world. High school is the “Senior Machine’, an impossible contraption of gears, cogwheels and motors constructed to make us better adults. Due to a serious car accident last summer, Charles Joseph was hospitalized and unable to complete his classes at the Umana. Regardless, via hospital bed, Charles continued his studies and through hard work and determination will be able to graduate in person with his friends and peers. In acknowledgment of his perserverence, courage, and desire to succeed, we, the fellow classmates of Charles Joseph dedicate this yearbook to him. Though you were not in our classes, you were in our hearts. The Mario Umana Harbor School of Science and Technology opened its doors to students in September of 1976. This graduating class is the first to complete the total high school cirruculum, grades 9-12. GUSTAVE ANGLIN HEADMASTER . Ghee tear stint 0 RS ct em ky Sy a saan pe iaey Se 4 Liisi = ‘. : 4 é . : 7 Bee eC a tlie WRisariissitinliat an BOA Seeman Se ees Dear Seniors: | want to extend my most sincere congratulations to the Class of 1980. Your group is the school’s second graduating class, and it has the distinction of being the first class containing students who have completed four full years of high school at the Umana. Your graduation is truly a milestone. You face this coming decade in the midst of national and international turmoil. During the next few years you will encounter problems of rising prices, fewer jobs, and energy and fuel shortages. As a result of crises in other parts of the world we all must face the serious threat of armed conflict. Men and women alike must now face the real possibility of spending time in the armed services in the defense of your county. You must be prepared to handle serious challenges as adults as soon as you graduate. You have shown yourselves to be potential leaders and pioneers of considerable strength. You came to this new school with an unusual curriculum that was located in a section of the city most of you had never seen. You were willing to gamble on these new ideas and were willing to leave familiar schools with old traditions. Since that time you have learned to study and work with people of different backgrounds, some born in different countries than yourselves. You have shown patience, perseverence and maturity during this experience. You are the students who, in four years, have made this school one of the best in the City of Boston, one that has already gained national recognition. You have much to be proud of. During the past four years you have had to travel a very difficult road to reach your destination. You experienced victory as well as suffered defeat, but the final outcome was success. The immediate future will be just as difficult. You must be determined to meet all challenges head on. This will give you the inner strength to continue to strive for excellence in all your future endeavors. Again, | want to extend congratulations and wish much success to the Class of 1980. GUSTAVE A. I’m gonna whip you | Is this the way the pros start? 50 (eye (a4 Combining a balanced offense with a tough-nosed defense, the Umana hockey team worked hard for a respectable six win, seven loss record. The Eagles earned a chance for the division championship by beating Trade handily three times and narrowly defeating Copley twice. Three one-goal losses to Latin Academy, however, dimmed Umana’s hopes. Leading the offensive charge was t he league’s highest scoring line - sophomores Mike Tevenan, Keith Bean, and Ken Flagg. Complementing this consistent trio was the fine play of Captain John Bradley and linemates Pito Fontanez and Michael Bean, a high scoring seventh grader. Other contributing forwards were Onofrio Minafo, Joel DeMas, and Jason Wallace. : The Umana defense shone during the season. Anthony Mattaliano and Jack Leffel spearheaded a defense corps that allowed the lowest goals - against total in Umana history. Goaltender Joe Finnigan performed superbly in nets, and newcomer back-up Eric Powers played well when called upon. With the expected return of most of this year’s starters the Umana hockey team and newly elected co- captains Anthony Mattaliano and Michael Tevenan are eagerly looking forward to next year. Due to injuries and other reasons, the team lost several of its seniors early in the season leaving the team with mostly freshmen and sophomores to carry on. Although competing with varsity teams throughout the city was difficult, the team held together quite well, giving up its losses by a narrow margin. The season ended with 4 wins and 9 losses and with a team prepared to take on the challenge of 1980-81. Three team members made the city All Stars. They were George Davis, Pito Fontanez, and Holson Stothart. Hold it right there buddy. Give it back it’s my balll Let’s Discol Get down herel G. Aguino hustles for the ball. ... UMANA HUSTLE 56 BOYS BASKETBALL 79-80 The 1979-1980 Umana Boys Basketball Team completed a successful year. They moved from last year’s 5-15 record to a very respectable 8-IO season against some of the best Division IIl teams in Eastern Massachusetts. Last year’s regulars Nelson Piacenza, Miguel Marinez, Michael Harris and Nate Smith were happy to have Kevin Ashton and Paul MacGregor join the varsity cause. Also newcomer Anthony Hanks worked right in to make a solid contribution. Louis Larry led the reserve troops with steady play along with Gordon Gleaves and Scott Jaundoo. Other team members include new student manager Mark Herron and Hiram Horne. The team wishes to thank Ms. Levine for her acute efficiency as official scorer which led to two victories and to Coach McHugh for his vast technical assistance to the team and to Mr. Glover. We will miss the spark and leadership of seniors Kevin Ashton, Nelson Piacenza and Anthony Hanks. Ashton moved to full time varsity play this year giving solid performances each game, Piacenza capped off a three year starting guard position with a fine year, and Hanks moved into a starting position as a first year player and earned his ‘‘wings” each game. Considering that the current group of Umana swimmers are young (average is 8.6) and virtually all new to the league, it was to their credit that the 1980 version of the team could swim faster than any of its predecessors. As a whole, the 1980 League was faster than the 1979 League, and the level of competition was greater. Umana was picked by virtually everyone to be the “patsie’” of the Bos- ton City League. Any win was a surprise win, and Umana scored three big surprises along the way, plus one forfeit. In addition, Umana had its first-ever boys swimmer to win a medal in All- City competi- tion (Tod Herron, 100 Breast) in 1980. Two other Umana swimmers came close with 7th place finishes (Scott Koval, 100 Free; and Chris Molloy, 200 Free). So, look out Boston City League, the Umana water babies are growing up fast and looking to better season in I98I. 5 ONES L Umana’s winning 400 Free Relay Team (L to R); B. Lynch, McLain, R. Newcomers Gari McLaughlin, San- | dra Green, Kelly Sprague and Tim- mea, White, greatly contributed to the team’s success. The team started and finished slowly as their record was 3 wins and 2 losses after five games. But then the squad under first year coach John Rooney won its next six games including an exciting 8-7 ten inning victory over arch-rival East Boston. That put their record at 9 wins and 2 losses with three games to go and the team needing but one victory to qualify for the first time ever for the Eastern Mass. tournament. But it was not to be as the team dropped the last three games of the season. Inconsistent performances from virtually every team member was the reason for the decline. Two players who did perform admirably for the entire year however were centerfielder and lead off batter Miguel Marinez who hit a solid .404 for the season and led the team in runs scored. Second baseman and shortstop Tom Lewis also was steadly at the bat as he led the team in runs batted in with many being of the clutch variety, including 5 R.B.I.’s in the win over East Boston. Next year looks to be a rebuilding year as the team loses to graduation its top two pitchers Bill McDonough and Nelson Piacenza. Bill was the recipient of a full scholarship to Boston University and Nelson will enroll in the fall of 1980 at Salem State College. Front (I to r) B. McDonough, D. Timony, D. Ruliera, R. Cruz, T. The team had much to learn in playing as one. The first year was not a happy one for winning. The team was 0-14 This same year the Junior Varsity team through long hours and hard work had a prosperous season. This was due to the batting and outstanding plays of Jolene Gobbi (left field) and Sonia Hernandez (pitcher se- cond base). The team record, II-3 gave the girls the spirit and the experience of winning. 1978-79. The Junior Varsity softball team became the varsity team with many new players. The teams in Division 2 did not give Umana an easy time. The team record was 2-12. The team lost I2 games but the scores were close. South Boston and Charlestown were the only teams that really gave Umana a beating. At the end of the season the team said that 1979 would be their year. 1979-80. The year of Success. This year Umana’s softball team fullfilled it’s potential and played up to expections. The team’s record was 12-4. This was third place Division 2, and gave the girls a chance to play in the State Tournament. This year the highest batters in Division 2 came from Umana. First year coach, Mrs. Joanne Barnett assisted by her teacher husband Rev. William Barnett brought together a young team to again place Umana in the circle of champions. The championship was a team effort with high stepping 8th graders Nicole Hullum and Charmaine Ward placing 3rd in the 220 yard and 440 yard run respectively. Charmaine also placed 4th in the long jump, with senior Carolyn Farrell placing second in both the long jump and the '2 mile run. From the mouths of children come words of wisdom and upon youthful legs rested the city championship. The mile relay team with Carolyn Farrell and the “wonder women” of the 8th grade (Charmaine, Nicole and Sandra Jackson) not only won the race, but set a new all time city record. Yes, there were more track members than the “wonder women’ and here they are. Janet Chin (junior) placed 4th in the high jump, Robert Whate (senior) placed 5th in the shot put, Stevenna Gaskins (junior) placed 3rd in the discus and marathon woman, Pamela James won the 2 mile race. Members of the supporting cast were Wanda Alston, Karen Dunson, Lisa Gray, Lisa Moreau, Julie Enciso, Lisa Martin Monica Bynoe, Taunya Johns, Lina Dell’Avia, Beddellia Witcher, Sylvia Freeman, Theresa Watkins, and Lisha Smith. Congratulations girls on a fine season. As much as we would like to dwell on the ladies, we must give the guys their credit. The boys team made their ‘run for the roses” with Kurt Barnes taking 2nd place in the quarter mile and first place in the hearts of the lady tracksters. Strong man, Eric Francis placed 6th in the shot put with supporting cast Ron Eiland, Steve Walker, Ty Tillman, James Gary, Billy Pope, Roland Meadows, Rodney Hanberry, James Maddox, Larry Furman, Maynard Thorn, Lucendo Fidalgo, and Larry McLean giving a fine helping hand. The event, a fundraiser for the year- book was a total success. For the price of 50¢ a flower, red carnations for love and white carnations for friendship were ordered in secret. The flowers were delivered to the recepient with- out any knowledge of the sender. The secret party was revealed later in the afternoon at the same cost of 50¢ per flower with the benefits helping sup- port the 1980 book. Editor ee 1979-I980 was a very successful year for the aviation program. There were several excellent field trips where students had the opportunity to visit Logan Airport, the National Weather Service, and Hanscom Airport. Most students in the program had the opportunity to actually take an orientation flight in a Cessna. The highlights of the program included; a group of lOth graders visiting Massport Noise Abate- ment Office with a film crew to film a career presentation and a field trip to Washington D.C. to visit the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, the Goddard N.A.S.A. Space Center and other sights of interest. (Next year we will try it again). The most important highlight of the program was the number of students pursuing flying lessons on their own, and of course the first student, Anthony Mattaliano, to receive his private pilot license.
