XVII PASS I DEDICATIO Gunnery Sergeant CCoachj Jim Morton arrived at the Ma- rine Military Academy in l969 after 20 years in the Marine Corps His service career began in May of l948 and includ- ed two wars two Purple Hearts and three tours at Paris lsland He ended his Marine Corps career as the NCOIC of Drill Instructor in l968 The year before his arrival at MMA Morton was the head football coach at Catholic High School in Memphis Ten- nessee where his team was ranked first in the state Having played football in the Marine Corps and having coached the San Diego Marine team in the early 60 s Coach Morton was highly qualified to lead the Fighting Leathernecks His record at MMA speaks for itself: l977 State Champion- ship Runner-Up State Champion in l975 and Undefeated team in l980 Morton has also coached the track team for the past I3 years and has had two undefeated seasons Until the arrival of his son Tom he was also head basket- ball coach These duties along with his others as A Company Drill Instructor makes Coach Morton a very busy man M M A was indeed fortunate the day Coach Morton ar- rived What sets hum apart from the ordinary coach is all the hours he has spent helping his players to achieve athle- lence His success in helping his people athletically is at- tested to by the fact that he now has players at S M.U Pittsburg Temple Southern lllinois Delaware North Caro- lina and the Service Academies lt would not be fair to dedicate this book without a special mention of those who have helped and supported Coach Morton over the years His two sons Tom and Mike who assist him here are both good coaches in their own rights But special credit must go to Mrs Morton Cllbbyj for all the long hours and week-ends lost while Big Coach was out doing his job Coach Morton is the tirst to admit that his success would not have been possible without her For all his years of dedication to the Marine Military Acad- emy we dedicate this Year Book to him From all of us who have known him over the years and from all of those he has helped we say Thanks Coach . 3 i ' ' is 1 ' 5 . v L I ' , D . 11 fl ' .ai aah' . Humihty tends to be one s greatest virtue. as you are constantly bracing. dropping. getting haircuts. and standing at attention. From l972 through l97 e coached the Physical Fitness team, which won the National Youth Physical Fitness Award in I973 and 6 national competitions. ln l979 he became coach for the Boxing Team, which is now considered one of the best teams in the Valley. She makes sure that all uniforms are altered to fit the cadet correctly. so that they may look sharp at all times. lf this is not enough to keep her busy, she works at the C.A.F. During his 365 years in the Corps. he has lead every size Marine aviation unii from the smallest fighter-bomber squadron to jhg Fleet Marine Force, Atlantic. During this time, he piloted 47 types of aircraft, ranging from early bi. planes to latest Harrier Vertical Take-Off jets. His combat flying ranged from the WW. ll battles of Peleliu and Okinawa to Korea and Vietnam. General Spanjer is also a devoted scholar. He has earned a BA from George Washington University: and is a graduate of the Armed Forces Staff College and the National War College. He earned his Masters degree in International Relations at George Washing- ton University and is a graduate of Harvard Business School's Advance Management Course. Originally from Ar- kansas, he has served in the Marine Corps for 27 years. He has degrees in Inorganic Chemistry. Physics, and Financial Management. As Comptroller. he handles all day to day affairs of the Academy, plus the Academy's investments. He also oversees the physical planning operations of MMA and the Mess Hall Services. Although his official title is Comptroller , his duties do not stop there. He is often a M.M.A. scout for football. officiator for basketball games. and is the pilot of the Academy Plane. Chaplain Mac's services to the cadets does not end with Wednesday night Vespers. He is available to counsel the cadets during the day in his office at Coleman Hall. They played their first 8 games away from home on unfamilar turf and without the support of their fans. In the first game. co-capt. ,l.J. Sustaeta broke his leg, keeping him out for the rest of the season. This was only one of the many injuries this year's squad had to endure. By the end of the season the 'Mighty Leathernecks' had lost 7 of its' starters. Through all of these adversities. the team stuck together and never gave up. They supported each other through all of the rough times. The retired officer has 28 years of active and inactive service. Most recently, he served as guidance counselor at the Woodlawn Middle School Complex in Munhall. Penn. He is a former classroom teach- er of French and English in the Munhall district. He is the past president of the Steel Valley Education Association and past presi- dent of the Parents Association, Winchester-Thurston School l975-76. Born in Athens, Georgia on September ll, I948, he traveled with his parents in the military. He has lived in Georgia, North Carolina, and California. Mr. Gilmore attended grades 9th - I lth at Samuel Ayer High School in Milpitas, Cali- fornia. He then moved to Haverlock, North Carolina, where he finished high school at Haverlock High School in l966. I966. Tichenor Due to Academic scheduling problems, the Academy Band got off to a slow start this year. How- ever, this was corrected, and they were back in full swing by the Birthday Ball. The Band was busy that weekend with three perfor- mances on Saturday. Later that month came the Houston Thanks- giving Day Parade. December brought the local Christmas pa- rades. ln February the band trav- eled again to Houston and the Mardi Gras in New Orleans. De- spite setbacks early in the year, the Band took many strides for- ward and hopefully will continue to do so in the future. 4' ww? The old range was torn down over the summer to make way for the new range. The team practiced on the outdoor range until construction began. MOU TED DE TACHMEN T The Mounted Detachment, under the supervision of Lin- da McLaughlin, learns the basics of horsemanship from the ground-up, and that means cleaning stalls, learning to care and handle horses, and to care for tack. The riding is only a small part of their daily activity. They ride in street parades. local horse shows in the Valley and in parades put on by the Corps of Cadets. With 20 horses to take care of, it is as much work as play. They do all of their own construction and maintenance work. This includes repairing stalls and fences. It would not be fair to mention the Mounted Detachment without a special 'Thanks' to Mr. Jack Gross for all of his help and assistance in making the Detachment the sucess it ls. DIC Istflt.
