ACADEMIC DEPARTMENT HEADS ENGLISH 1 l 1. , , .V mx I I Charles Christesson earned his BA in English at Texas A8iI University, Kingsville, Texas, in 1973. He came to MMA as an instructor in English and became the Chairman of the Department last year. Mr. Christesson is primarily responsible for the high A.C.T. scores in the past few years. He is appreciated for his skill and cordially hated for his uncompromising demand for maximum effort. Mr. Christesson also is the advisor for the Drama Club and wrote the satirical play The MMA Way. LANGUAGE SCIENCE Hermann Graef, head of the Language Department, has been with MMA since 1976. He was born in Schonbach!Asch, Czechoslovakia fSudetenlandl of German-speaking parents in 1932. Along with all other German- language people, he was evicted from Czechoslovakia after WWII. He was in West Germany until 1955, when he came to America. He was in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1958, stationed in the U.S. and Germany. After his release from active duty, he settled in Detroit where he finished high school. Mr. Graef then moved to Nashville where he attended George Peabody College and worked for the Methodist Board until he received his B.A. in English. He moved to Vanderbilt and earned his MA in Teaching and German in 1968. Mr. Graef taught at New Mexico Military Institute for three years, then returned to Vanderbilt for additional Graduate work before coming to MMA, Richard S. Hockaday received his BA in Bacteriology and Chemistry from the University of Texas where he was also captain of the boxing team, in 1942. Shortly after graduation he ' entered the Navy as an AviaI10H Cadet and in 1943 was commissioned as a Marine Aviator. During the remainder Of WWII, he was a test pilot, flight instructor and carrier pilot. He . flew Avenger Torpedo Bombers in Admiral Halsey's task force in the Pacific theatre. After the war, he began his teaching career at S311 Benito, Texas. He received h1S Master of Science Degree from fha University of Texas in 1960. MF-d Hockaday came to MMA 3? hea 7 of the Science Department in 196 - He was selected as an Outstanding Secondary Educator of America in 1975. f..-.3

IN . f 344: Ann Einkauf- Asst. Director of Admissions ADMISSIONS Perhaps the best description of the Assistant Director of Admissions, Ann Einkauf, is as a traffic cop for paperwork. Ann sends out applications and admissions information. Then she routes all incoming documentation to the proper office for decisions on admittance. scholarships, medical qualification and placement. She insures that timely completion of all requirements is at least possible. Ann says the name of her office means The way in, and she does everything she can to make that way smooth and hassle free.

Q g? .ai A 1. 5 1 MATHEMATICS HUMANITIES ATHLETICS H. Bruce Mclntosh, Head of the Mathematics Department. teaches algebra and calculus. Mr. Mclntosh brought to the Academy last year over 27 years of teaching experience, gained primarily in the Youngstown, Ohio school system and at Youngstown State University. Mr. Mclntosh earned his BS at Youngstown College and his Master's at the University of Pittsburgh. He also participated in National Science Foundation studies in mathematics at Miami of Ohio and at Berkeley. Mr. Mclntosh served three and one half years with Artillery units in Europe during WW II. He then entered the Army Reserve, Infantry, where he served until he retired in the grade of Lt. Col. Mr. Mclntosh was for three years the Vice President of the Ohio Council, Teachers of Mathematics. Ierry Holbert is a graduate of Texas A8zM where he earned his BA degree in English in 1969. He entered the Navy after Craduation and attended The Defense Language Institute at Monterey, California. After his training in Arabic. he was assigned to the Sixth Fleet as a linguist at the American Embassy on Cyprus. He re-entered Texas A8fM after his discharge from the Navy and completed his Masters Degree in History. Mr. Holbert joined the MMA Faculty in 1975 as a Social Studies and English Teacher. Today. in addition to serving as Chairman of the Social Studies Department. he coaches the MMA tennis team and is the asst. coach of the IV football teani ill Tom Morton was with MMA as a History teacher and asst. coach of the varsity football team. Once having worked with the best, he found himself dissatisfied elsewhere and came back home. He is now Athletic Director and a Social Studies teacher. He is the coach of the track team. He works with his father, lim Morton, and his younger brother, Mike, on the only son-father-son coaching staff in Texas, and possibly in the naUon.
