After officer training at Quantico, Virginia, he was ordered to Korea and served as a platoon leader with the First Battalion, 1st Marines. Tours as a company grade officer followed in Pearl Harborg Annapolis, Marylandg Camp Lejeune, North Carolinag and Pueblo Colorado. Promoted to Major in 1960, he joined the 3rd Marine Division on Okinawa as the G-3 Plans Officer. Lieutenant Colonel Parsons then attended the Command and Staff College and instructed at the Amphibious Warfare School until 1968. He commanded the 2nd Battalion, 28th Marines and subsequently became the Assistant to the Senior Marine Advisor to the Vietnamese Marine Corps. Returning to the United States in 1970, he was assigned to be the Commanding Officer, Embassy Guard Battalion. consisting of some 130 Marine detachments throughout thelworld. Transferred to Parris Island in 1973. he was executive officer ofthe Commanding General.
