1912-1979 MEMORY CHRISTIA DeGUIG EIII FRIEND SUPPURTER MARINE lt has been my privilege during thirty years in San Mateo to know many wonderful people. Their friendship has deeply enriched my life. One of those for whom l feel special affection and esteem is Christian de Cuigne. How we shall miss him! Theres a Prayer by Robert Louis Stevenson that Chrissy himself might well have written. Give us courage. gaiety. and the quiet mind. Doesn't this really sum up his response to Life and to Cod? Give us courage. Some of you know the dreadful illness he endured for months and months, and the gallant way with which he faced it, Give us courage and gaiety. How he loved a good story. He happened to believe that God created this beautiful world and intended for Man to enioy it. Therefore. he filled his life with laughter and music: and gracious hospitality. What a delight to be a guest in his home and to know his lovely wife. Courage. gaiety and the quiet mind. He knew that the world has been in trouble ever since the fall of Man. so that he remained undaunted by any current upheaval. Patience and Tolerance were two of his chief virtues. Another was his deep sense ofstewardship. responsibility and generosity. I believe it's what the French call unoblesse oblige. ln talking with his family. his friends. his employees. it seems that the thing they most remember was his love for people. He did not only love people in the theological sense which our Lord Commands us to do, he actually liked people. He enjoyed being with them. whether it be in his office or at a State Dinner in the White House, He was equally at home in both places. I can see him being very much at home in Heaven where he will be surrounded by so many things that are important to him. Beauty and Ioy and Love. ln the Name of the Father and of the Son and ofthe Holy Ghost, Amen This Salute was written bythe Reverend Lesley Wilder. and was given at the Requiem Mass for Christian de Cuigne lll. in St. Mathews Catholic Church on October Bth. 1979.
