To show f, the academy's appreciation for her generous gift, the chapel is named in 4 her honor. Over the years Mrs. Northen has established a tradition of service to educational institutions and projects. In addition to serving on the academy's Board of Trustees, Mrs. Northen has also been of invaluable help to Rollins College near Roanoke, Virginia where she is on ' the Board of Directors, The University of Texas is where she served on the University of Texas' Committee of seventy-fiveg and Texas A8zM University where she was a member of the Century Council. For her help and steadfast devotion to the Marine Military Academy and to the pursuit of academic excellence in general, we c respectfully dedicate this yearbook. I U 5 l. 5 I YEARBOOK DEDICATION On the Fact Sheet Mrs. Ann Einkauf, the Assistant Director of Admissions at the Marine Military Academy, describes herself as a plain vanilla person. But, ask any cadet for his description of her, and one hears adjectives such as kind, warm, and wonderful. As one of the first persons a potential cadet meets, Mrs. Einkauf has been responsible, more than once, for turning the potential into the actual. Perhaps her love for the cadets has its foundation in her love for her own five children: Andy, Terri, Sandi, Robin, and Bobby, and in her strong Christian beliefs and practices. Mrs. Einkauf's warmth, sincerity, and genuine love for all people make her, in turn, one of the most loved and respected people at the Academy. It is out of this love and respect that we dedicate this yearbook. ' 1 l 1 I BOARD OF TRUSTEES 1. General Vernon E. Megee, USMC CRetJ, Chairman of the Board 2. Brig. Gen. Walter S. As this yearbook goes to print, February 1980, those Americans are still being held. As a symbol of our support and our respect, not only for the hostage Marines, for whom we have a natural affinity but also for the civilians caught up in this crisis, we dedicate this page. ,i , f M- , 1 ...fi Q... 5 ,Q ,J 1 , .., ,, ff' .qc 8 ,Q 7 1912-1979 MEMORY CHRISTIA DeGUIG EIII FRIEND SUPPURTER MARINE lt has been my privilege during thirty years in San Mateo to know many wonderful people. Their friendship has deeply enriched my life. One of those for whom l feel special affection and esteem is Christian de Cuigne. How we shall miss him! Theres a Prayer by Robert Louis Stevenson that Chrissy himself might well have written. Give us courage. gaiety. and the quiet mind. Doesn't this really sum up his response to Life and to Cod? Give us courage. Some of you know the dreadful illness he endured for months and months, and the gallant way with which he faced it, Give us courage and gaiety. How he loved a good story. He happened to believe that God created this beautiful world and intended for Man to enioy it. Therefore. he filled his life with laughter and music: and gracious hospitality. What a delight to be a guest in his home and to know his lovely wife. Courage. gaiety and the quiet mind. He knew that the world has been in trouble ever since the fall of Man. so that he remained undaunted by any current upheaval. Patience and Tolerance were two of his chief virtues. Another was his deep sense ofstewardship. responsibility and generosity. I believe it's what the French call unoblesse oblige. ln talking with his family. his friends. his employees. it seems that the thing they most remember was his love for people. He did not only love people in the theological sense which our Lord Commands us to do, he actually liked people. He enjoyed being with them. whether it be in his office or at a State Dinner in the White House, He was equally at home in both places. I can see him being very much at home in Heaven where he will be surrounded by so many things that are important to him. Beauty and Ioy and Love. ln the Name of the Father and of the Son and ofthe Holy Ghost, Amen This Salute was written bythe Reverend Lesley Wilder. and was given at the Requiem Mass for Christian de Cuigne lll. in St. Mathews Catholic Church on October Bth. 1979. The business office has to balance needs against possibilities. Twice a month, on pay days, these people inhabit the most popular office on campus. 1 S ts! 3 ' J' I I I rr '-lit:-4 Roswell I. Boys will be boys, no matter how hard they try to make it to adulthood without scrapes and bruises, and that's why the dispensary will always be hopping. The staff is always ready when you need a shot, a cure for athlete's foot, an aspirin or tea and sympathy. The medical team attends many sporting events that the Academy participates in so you will sometimes see them keeping a protective eye open 18 hours a day. i Chief Gerald Backus, Dispensary Supervisor H Mr. Iim Backus, Medical Assistant 'W ..,v-A MESS HALL The food service crew prepares more than three hundred meals, three times each day. In addition to the filling the seemingly limitless appetites of the cadets, Marvin's helpers feed the hundreds of guests A who come to MMA each year. They also support many of the organizations that use the Mess Hall for their meetings, and have that job that seems to be the i i nemesis of all - washing the thousands of dishes - after everyone has eaten. PUBLIC AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT AND DEVELOPMENT OFFICE Hundreds of news releases and feature articles are created by the PAO and submitted to national magazines and newspapers during the school year. Last year alone, over 19,000 column inches of published MMA copy were confirmed by this office. All school photos are handled by this department. Staff photographers recorc MMA history on film, shoot news and magazine stories, and take any photo assignment that might be assigned. PAO staff writes, illustrates and produces the Academy magazine, The MMA journal, published three times a year. With a student staff, the office also directs the production of our yearbook, Pass In Review. They arrange tours, speeches, and interviewsg show films and prepare advertising and promotion materials just to keep things humming and interesting. 14 . . S l Thomas D. Segel. He saw action in the Pacific during WWII and again in the Korean Conflict. Being the Sgt.!Maj. at MMA is like being one in a regular Marine unit, says Steigerwald. The big difference is the age factor. I'll truthfully say there are times when these youngsters are even better than their adult counterparts. Now, that's accomplishing something. Sergeant Major W. E. Steigerwald 11 4lE,' 1 X 'lr- CHAPEL Marine Military Academy cadets are taught to believe in themselves, their fellow cadets, their corps, country, and Cod. The arrival of the former Chaplain of the Marine Corps, Captain Leo I. McDonald, has brought a new dimension to the religious training at M.M.A. His experience in the area of counseling and helping young men in a military atmosphere is already proving successful. Because of my military training, I can help these young men, he says, but l am not an academic counselor. He feels he adds only an additional resource to the counseling abilities of M.M.A. Since his arrival at M.M.A. Chaplain McDonald has found a meaningful and rewarding sgx ministry. The Academy believes in developing the whole person, he noted. And he feels he can help cadets to develop in a spiritual way. 1 ' , V My, '.v:r'f. Some needed new instruments have been bought, the band has a new practice hall. there are several new rooms for individual practice, and budding musicians can schedule instruction times. The musicians started the year by capturing the Best Band AND the Best Entry awards at Padre Island, and have gone forward from there. If the school, the Bandmaster and the band members are inclined to brag just a wee bit. . .we understand. As with all other activities the musicians still have to cram their study time into their practice and travel schedules. ,, ....-.....,.,, , K 1Qa A., --v..,,...,,, QUARTER- MASTER After having lived in or visited in 62 countries during his 30 years in the Marine Corps, Master Gunnery Sergeant Charles F. Y R ,1 DRILL IN STRUCTORS When cadets think of MMA, they usually remember their Drill Instructor, who reflects. more than anyone else, the Marine Corps style of living emphasized in the Academy. ln fact, MMA wouldn't be MMA if there weren't a gravel-voiced DI or two sounding off, ''Alllll-lllllll-riggghhhttt,'' mister, hit the deck and give-me-tennn! As some cadets can testify, the DI can see through walls, has the tenacity of a bulldog and the hide of an alligator, bellows like a foghorn, owns ears like radar antennas, possesses a glance that shrivels, is held erect with a steel ramrod, and inside his breast pumps acid through a heart of a gentle lion. Yes, you'll always remember your DI. Maybe you didn't like him much, but you sure respected him! - it TQ, .xx wa rgi Qs? tl. Major Steigerwald's coaching and the dedication of each boxer, the boxing team was a complete success. No matter where they go they leave their mark on their opponents who know that when they are matched with an MMA cadet, they will have a rough fight. In addition to basic training, waking up at 6 am. and running 3- 5 miles every other day, they also work out at the boxing gym. This type of training is very demanding and consists of hard, strenuous workouts. The dedication of each boxer enables him to put forth 110 percent of his total capability. li ., 1 ix 1- , 1 7' . f!'i Lw,aL '-. 4 9' V2 If L ......-1-H SWIMMING Proving to their competitors all across the valley they were competent rivals, the MMA swim team began the season with a win against Edinburg, ending the season with a record four wins and two losses. By leading this pointless conversation into a cul-de-sac of pointless ideas, I have found a way to vaporize this and all forthcoming pointless conversations. This eliminates the need to invent further pointless theories, arguments, and hypothetical situations, whose purpose can only be the causing of pointless mental exasperations. Thus, the universe is now safe from virtually a whole race of pointless, precise people, pointlessly intent on pointless self examination in a pointless manner. Don Boo-Boo Arndt Class of '80' Carry on Young Bucks fOr SUFG SRS BO Later on Buddy-Ruff LETTER FROM THE EDITOR How is it possible to adequately express all of the thanks that are due so many people! Well, it isn't. However, I will make a feeble attempt to list them all. General Spanjer, Col. Parsons, Maj. Lewis, and Mr. Sharp always seemed to be there to give the backing needed in such a project. Next, we thank Mr. Davis who somehow put up with our endless questions. Then there is PAO and all its occupants who put up with our mess and confusion. We can't forget Mrs. Frizzell, Mr. Sustaeta and Cadet Barth for their help in typing, and Mr. Schwartz for our first office. A special thanks goes to Col. O'Mara for his patience and supportiveness. Last but not least, I would like to give special thanks to Miss Pickens and Miss Schaffer who gavefso unselfishly of their time and effort, not to mention their nerves which were pushed to wit's end practically every day. It is all of these people including the staff and faculty who I thank on behalf of the entire yearbook staff., for without them this yearbook would not have been possible.
