Johnson As many of the private schools around the country are closing their doors because of sagging enrollments, the Marine Military Academy is growing faster and larger than had been expected since its opening in 1965. This is due mostly to the generous financial bequests from a very special group of individuals, The Holland M. Smith Associates. Their interest in seeing the Academy grow has been a benefit of our country and its youth. It has helped us to gain an international reputation and is hereby acknowledged with the following dedication: Ladies and gentlemen of the Holland M. Smith Associates, We the 1976 Corps of Cadets of the Marine Military Academy salute you. With utmost gratitude we acknowledge your finan- cial support of our school. In this special Bicentennial Year we hereby dedicate this 1976 edition of the Pass in Review to you with our wish that on these pages you will share with us the great pride we take in our country and school. When it came time to choose a theme for the 1976 Pass in Review, we knew it had to be something very special to cele- brate America's Bicentennial Birthday. We wanted to join our fellow Americans in saluting our land. Throughout the nation cities and towns were busily planning pageants, special exhibits, and countless other ways to let the world know how proud we are of our heritage. So. we here at the Marine Military Academy realized our theme had to reflect the pride WE 'felt in the two hundred years of growth and achievement which make The United States of America the world power it is today. At the same time the Academy would be celebrating its own birthday, for 1976 represents the tenth year of our school's exist- ence. The Marine Military Academy is the nation's only Marine oriented military preparatory school, and our birthday coin- cides with two hundred years of existence of thc inspiration upon which our school was founded- The United States Marine Corps. The problem of how to extend our congratulations to all three on an equal basis was quickly solved when we 'chose the cover design for the 1976 yearbook. Everyone at the Academy is proud of the beautiful painting entitled American Youth - The Spirit of 76 which Dmitri Vail, the world famous portrait artist, presented to the Academy last year. For this reason we contrasted the new Spirit of 76 with thc equally famous painting The Spirit of 1776 by an early American artist. We felt the contrast between these two examples of American spirit, past and present, would lct everyone 'know this year the spirit to achieve, better yet to excel , in all we did was evident in .every phase of our school life here at Marine Military Academy. Enrollment was up, cadet morale was outstanding, our athletic teams were top-rated in all sports, new Academic comses were challenging the minds of all students, as n dedicated administration, faculty and military department led the way to make this year of 1916 the biggest and the best in Academy history. . ' We , the staff of the 19'76 Pass in Review, feel that in this yearbook, we have ,paid due homage to our country., our inspira- tion, -and our school , and as you glance through its pages you will see that the Spirit of JG is indeed a very .real thing for the cadets of the Marine Military Academy. as ---anus:-N +' - FRCDM THE HALLS OF MONTEZUMA 26st. Just as the eyes of the world are on the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA in this bicentennial year, so are the eyes of all the friends and families on the SENIOR CLASS of 1976. We are a group of individuals who are ready to meet the challenges of our destiny. We are ready and able to do our share as citizens in shaping the future of this great nation in which we live. During our last year at the academy, we Seniors were expected to set the pace in all facets of school life. We had to show everyone that the Spirit of '76 was at work in our class. Our conduct was expected to be exemplary forthe underclassmen. Our scholastic programs were geared to our own individual plans after graduation. It was a time for us to realize how important this last year of school was to our future success. It was here at the academy that we were in a miniature world, designed to help us find our place in society. We were encouraged to search for knowledge of ourselves, our limitations and potential. We benefited from the patience and guidance of teachers and others involved in our lives on the campus of M.M.A. From being together as cadets living in such close quarters, we learned the need for tolerance and compatibility among people. We are a group of men who assimilated many quali- ties, and now we shall use them for the betterment of a world which allows us to be a part of it. As Seniors, our search for our place in this world has just begun. We will carry with us the Spirit of '76 wherever we go! C L A S S . While working hard toward this goal, they stretched themselves and also provided welcome leadership to the cadet battalion. We wish them continued success in whatever challenge they attempt. . ERIC HEIDHAUSEN - Eric is the great POOK hunter of the class of 76. You can always tell when Eric was on the hunt by his famous call, Here POOK, OH Here POOK. For those whose years of schooling have not covered this great subject, TOO BAD! You can be sure that Eric is the most noted hunter of this small, furry, and very elusive creature. WE THE CLASS OF 76 wish him the best of luck in all his hunts. JAMES DEMEZAS - The Sneaky Greek as he is known by the Military Dept. 'has'been at the Academy for five years and each year he has come up with a new hobby. Last year it was his 65 Mustang. This year we can honestly say we don't know what he's up to, but we have a feeling it's going to be big. HEY, MOUSEY leave something for the Class of '77 O. K. ?? We hope the University of Houston is ready for lim . 34 MIKE HOGAN - Hogie has been with us for two years, and has been known for his famous attempts at T.D. passes and infamous councils about attacks on A Co. , to which he is so faithful. All the best at U of M. MARC GREGORY - Duck has been with us for four years now and you can see how the joint has changed him. He came here as a small, skinny Ziptred, but after 4000 pull-ups and even more sit-ups later he's just a little bigger Ziptred . Best to ya at the University of Texas, ZIP. PAT HOUGHTON - Reverend as he is known by many, is one of the most self controlled of all the Seniors. The calm- ness of his voice can lull you to sleep or fill you with excite- ment, yet we have only to say one key word and the Devil takes hold of ol' Rev! - that word is Karen. Good Luck Pat. JIM GERNAND - Gerney is another member of the six year gang: born in Sick Bay he's been here for many years. What has kept him from going nuts? Surely we could only guess, but it could be his unknown whereabouts on the weekends, or a certain young lady named MARY. We wish him lots of luck at either Texas Tech or Central Michigan University. JOHN MCKISKI - Mr. Flyboy must have logged more air time in his two years at the Academy than class time. It is not that he was in an airplane that much, but it always seemed to us that when the landing gear touched down his mind was still in the clouds. We know John will fit right into Emery Ridde1's Formation. l l 1 , .V GARY BRISKIE - MAD DOG finally cracked this year CHe was cracked the other three years also lb but that's not unusual in D company. At night you could hear his famous last words, Don't hide it, divide it. No one knows where he's going or what he'll do CEXCEPT PARTYJ so good luck, Bri- skie. 35 PAUL BRUNDRETT - Paul has been at MMA for five years, and slid through Ramadagate without a scratch. He was also able to be a Captain twice in one year - A Company and the Red Plague of 76. We wish Paul all the luck at Texas A8nM. KEVIN THOMPSON - Congratulations on making Cadet of the Month. With this kind of study we know that you are going to be successful at whatever you attempt. Keep hammering away - Deadeye. 36 l DAVID PORTER - Known to his friends as Bwana, he is the only person we know who can be riding his bike up Mt. Kila- manjaro one day and the next be riding the waves in California. He got the worst football injury of '75 during practice. Good luck, Port, at Purdue or Nairobi U. MARK INGRAM - Known for his smiling face and charming voice, Mark has made a big hit with us there. As for your future, we don't know how you're going to fit your tuba into the cockpit of an F-4 Phantom, but you will find a way. Good luck. LEE LOMBARD - Another of the lifers here at the Academy, Lee has come up with some of the most far fetched Sea Stories you could wish to hear, but don't wish because Old Lomby at times can force you to break out the waidersg you'll never find a better friend than Lee no matter how hard you look. We can only wish Lee the best of luck, and say you may have the mouth of a politician, but sure you have heart of a lion. Take it as it comes Radiation at Texas A and M , and best of luck with Linda . F' WALTER ROSS - Zeke to everyone, is known for his spee- tacular high diving, and even for his running abilities. He'd make a sick frog laugh on his death bed. CWe think he has a couple of timeslj. We wish all the luck in the world to Zeke, and his pet turtle. ROBERT EDDLEMAN - Little Sweg came to the Academy with everything going for him. First he was put into A Co. , and second his cousin was the company commander, but the best laid plans of mice and men don't always work. You see one of the most spectacular things to happen in Bob's second year at the Academy was the first streak off the M.A.A. pool's high dive. Unfortunately for Bob he was the streaker and the S.D.O. was the streakie. We can only hope L.S. improves his diving style. JOE PETRY - .Toe has been one of the party boys here at the Academy for four years now, and it looks like he might not stop come graduation. Joe is the type of person you can tell the day of the week with. On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday Joe is a kind, happy and easy going fella, but come Monday thru Thursday, stand back, 'cause a monster bigger and meaner than King Kong is on the loose. Take it easy KONG! TERRANCE LYNCH - Terrance qseen on the right in the rearj could be called the invisible man of the class of '76, We know he's there, but no one really knows what he does! We can only say of Terrance that he would fit right in with the C.l.A. because he is the best, low profile man on campus. if ERIC HARRY - Hairless as he is known by many, was able to go from Lt. to Capt. just by staying out of sight for awhile. If it weren't for ol' Hairless, the Batt. Staff just wouldn't be the same. A 38 IOBY REED - I .J . , one of the jolly green suing beans of MMA. He's so tall, he always has a great view at all the games, movies and formatioms. He knows it's going to rain 30 min. ahead of time. Good luck in whatever you choose to do, and whatever you do, watch out for those air- planes. CHIP DAVIS - Demp is the type of person you don't forget. He is the one and only member of the class of 76 who means it when he says he's coming back next year. Well, if he likes it so much, we're glad he will be here for some time to come. In fact he may just be MMA's first 10 year cadet . JEFF ABLE - Snake will always be remembered as a so-so football player, but a great person. He may not be the greatest speaker from a long line of Battalion Commanders, but he can stay in step. We wish him the best, but we must ask this important question - WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO ALLISON? RUPERT RICHARDS - 'Rich' in his 4 years here has mastered the art of not changing one bit from the kid he was when he came here. Good Luck! ! ! JEFF KIMBALL- The only true kicker in the Class of '76, Jeffro would rather listen to Charlie Pride than eat. You can always tell when Cowboy is around by the dying cow sounds we hear. lt's been two, long hard years for Jeff , but maybe it's been worth it. Ride 'em cowboy! ! ! TOM CARPENTER - Made it through Rarnadagate without a scratch, made it through 4 years at MMA without a demerit, and will probably make it through life without a detour. The only second string man we know to do it 4 years running. Best of luck at USC, Stanford, Cal or Ca1Tech. RICHARD HANCOCK - Herbie, as he is known by all, had more trouble trying to convince everyone that he was a senior and passing all of his classes. The color guard is going to miss you when you go to that big color guard in the sky at SMU. And remem- ber that it is not too safe to have more girl friends than you can handle at one time. Good-luck with Peggy, Genett, and whats- her-name. MICHAEL HAWLEY - Major is one of the former Hole in the Wal1 gang members. Over the past two years, Mike has not done much to be noticed - and he admits it: he did however, arrange the Senior Class shoot with Southwest. We wish him the best of luck at B.Y.U. or the Univ. of Utah. Brake a leg! Seniors 76! 41 WILLIAM ROEFER - Football-head has been called many things here at the Academy, Qsome we can't printb but the search for a name ended this year with the choosing of SON OF FAUST. The class of '16 can only say - go get'em Rofe. TIM MURPHY - Known to many people as SIR, Murph will always be remembered for his size C6'5 , 260 1bs.J even though he is a bumkin. His future plans were to go to the Naval Academy, but I think he's going to take the civilian option. Good luck, Gramps! DEAN DALRYMPLE - After four years at the Acad- emy, Dean has yet to find the perfect female, but that has not affected his grades in the least. Dean has even taken to the air to find his dream girl, but it's of no avail. Let's hope he finds her at that CALL GIRL3 college he's applied to. DAVE WALKER - Walk will always be remembered for his uncanny ability to run over people on the football field. Dave, in the off-season, likes to go ice-skating. His future plans are to be like Mr. White and play a physics teacher. Anybody for the Class of 'l6? MARK CZARZASTY - Czarmont is known far and wide for his eating habits and always having his funnel on hand. Scrapiron has a powerful left leg which will get him a spot on the U.S .N. A. football team. His most famous words on the football team were, Now Coach? Now? Best of luck, Mark. KEVIN LYNCH - Known as the Ball Hawk on the bas- ketball team, Kevin can always be remembered as the typical Sergeant. He was always seen squaring his men away, as well as himself CWe think! ? I J. MIKE LORENTANGELI - Tangerine was always good for a laugh or two. He was a fine football player as well as a seri- ous student in class. Mike has always been called ' 'Don Rick- les, Jr. and would like to become a professional comedian after he graduates from U. S . N . A . BILL TATE - Known for both his football skills and his love for M.M.A. Tater has been labeled a squared-away cadet. How could we forget his leadership test scores or him becoming a LT. Good luck, my man. SENIOR ROSTER Abel. Jeffery Robert 2217 Longview Drive Woodbridge , Va. 22191 47033 494-5588 Briskie, Gary L. Rt 85 Amsterdam, NY 12010 45183 842-2508 Brundrett, Paul L. Rt 3. Early Marines strike an off duty pose The underclassmen have proved to themselves and others that when a task is put to them, they can successfully accomplish it. This year, as never before in the school history, the underclassmen have been called upon to take on leadership responsibilities. Because of the increase in the student body, more leadership positions are open, and the staff and faculty felt the underclassmen were ready and able to take up the challenge and obviously they were right. Since taking charge of the superintendents job five years ago, he has worked to build a body of traditions which the cadets and the entire MMA family can be proud of. General Bowman is a familiar figure on the campus as he endeavors to stay close to the cadets and their problems. His morning Sick Bay visits are a good example of the dedication General Bowman has for his job. SPECIA ON M.M.A ,,s,...--'-'WW' Y X This year at M.M.A. we were honored by having a television show on education filmed on campus. It is our hope that the NBC filming crew had as much fun as we did. lt was really an experience: not only for the cadets but equally as much for the staff and faculty. The film primarily deals with student life and activities of a normal day. The reason they chose the Academy for the filming is because over the past 10 years there has been an enormous increase in enrollment here, while other schools show a dras- tic DECREASE. We would like to extend our thanks to NBC and all the people that have helped make the Academy what it is today. 195 4 w 1 Remember how simple it was when you get your own 707 . No one can be mature and adult without coming to grips with the great problems of existence. Chapel should point out the problems and face a guy in the direction in which answers can be found . The service points out that the quality and style of the life we live are important and that each man must make his decision in this regard. This means t.hat the concept of God and His being needs to be examined and explained. From this, the Cadet adds a new dimension to his own life. ABEL, JEFFREY ROBERT 1721 DOB: 7-2950 1121 Lt.
